No justification, these are just the characters I want to see back the most. Alistair and Anders are honorable mentions--I just don't think either of those two would work as companions considering what can happen to them in the end, and both of their character arcs feel "finished."

well, I also tried to add in an even mix of male and female characters for LI options, too...
...obviously I forgot to think about class, but oh well.

(Although knowing Bioware, there will probably be some quest where your Dog dies, too. Damn them.)

For me, if I used my Dwarven Noble Warden I would have

Morrigan (I still consider her the best party member yet)
Merrill (due to the connection with the eluvian, and morrigan and my warden went through one)
Oghren (just love him in the party)
Zevran (who doesn't love an assassin best friend?)
Original Dog (due to the grief it can give Morrigan)
Isabella (just to see how she and Zevran interact long-term)
Leliana (loved her song in Origins after the Dalish Elf treaty)

If I played as Hawke, my companion list would be mostly different.

Merrill (romanced)
Varic
Sigrun (who doesn't love a perky suicidal dwarf?)
Velanna (how she gets along with my Hawke would be entertaining)
Cassandra (I know she wasn't on the list, but there's a lot of potential there)
Flemeth (I can see a lot of story potential with the Ashebelamnar the elves call her)
Templar Carver (I just loved how the brothers came together in my game when Carver was a templar, and finally put their differences aside--although I am curious how he'll get his lyrium fix)

1) Morrigan (always brightens up the mood. Threatening to set Arl Eamon's estate on fire for demanding her to wear more clothes? Priceless)
2) Cullen (an actual templar in our party with a moderate stance)
3) Nathaniel (his appearance was way too short. He deserves longer screentime. I truly hope they make him a DA3 full companion)
4) Sten (after battling those generic Stens, I've come to miss cookies!Sten sorely)
5) Cassandra (might as well confirm her already)
6) Anders (he probably has a slim chance returning a third time, but one can hope. Would mostly want to watch his interactions with Morrigan)
7) Wynne (she's attending a mage congregation of some sort in Cumberland, isn't she? I'd definitely want her to return. Teach Anders a thing or two about controlling spirit possessions)
8) Oghren on a pony

Yes, that's right.  The only character I love in Origins is Alistair.  The rest of them drive me nuts.  Conversely, the only one I hate in DAII is Sebastian.  I either love, or severely like, the rest of them.

The other key to companions is that if DAIII follows the same path as DAII, then the party choices will likely conform to a 1/archetype convention... As in, one DW rogue, one archery rogue, one damage mage, one healer, etc...

That said, here are my choices:
Warriors -
- 1H - New character - I can't see Aveline or Alistair returning
- 2H - Oghren - I just prefer him over Sten or Fenris
Rogues -
- DW - Zevran - Unless Leiliana is a party character
- Bow - New character - Varric told his story in DA2, so as much as I'd want him back, he's likely done
Mages -
- Healer - New character - Wynne might make a comeback here, but Anders, I'm afraid not
- Damage - Morrigan - I'd prefer Merrill, but Morrigan seems more likely for story purposes

Morrigan - I just love her
Isabela - I just love her too
Alistair - him also xD
Anders - awesome as healer
Carver - awesome warrior
Varric - Bianca. enough said
Sigrun - meh someone has to fill the last spot xD
