It was interesting that he says he is not the target audience for this type game..and normally doesn't like this type game..yet the combat hooked him.
That's a good sign for the combat.

Actually, it can also be a bad thing, this is an RPG, for RPG'ers, not a rpg, that action gamers would normally like, just to play Devils advocate. it can mean it lacks as an RPG, we'll see.

Unless you read the article.

He liked it for the strategy, not the action.

One persons take on stategy can be anothers dumbed down combat engine, the guy is a console gamer, and Pc gamer docked points off for the combat, so we'll see, one mans opinion does not mean much.

Based on what?  He's only playing it on the console because the review copy arrived before the PC copy (the one he intended to play) did.

Actually what I got from the post about getting hooked to the combat was the fact he had to use multiple tactics like tanking and pulling and all of the other normal RPG elements.

Quote from the author "I'm a bit surprised that it hews so closely to typical MMO tactics: pulling, tanking, nuking. But the characters have so much personality, and they're so distinct from each other, that it doesn't feel played out."

That gives me a lot of hope.  That not only gives me hope that not only is it a great RPG but it can make you think outside the box and pull in some MMORPG elements as well.  Sounds like a well rounded / written game to me.

Wow he describes the combat so well, ahhh I wanna playyy

In reading his next article, it seems like a reliance on potions or a dedicated healer is required :/ but I guess theres no other way to do it

Funny thing is this was a tactic I used extensively in Balder's Gate I/II...

Another funny thing is that it is a tactic one could use to great effect in assymetric warefare, especially when outmatched/outgunned.  "Baiting" in combat is not exclusive to MMOs ;)

Absolutely, you will need a source of health to get you through the tougher battles. But, reading the article, it seems like Bioware have put some thought into allowing you to play without a healing mage, if that's what you want to do. Very encouraging.

Still, even if his playstyle for Morrigan is all darkish and entropic, you'd think he could spare one talent point to give her a healing spell to help mitigate his potion problems.

Haha... yeah, I hope though that this game doesn't turn into a "chugging contest" like the author is implying: where the fighter/tank/big-guy's job is to drink health potions as fast as he can until the monster dies, since he's getting nearly killed with every blow.

The alternative is the perpetually-healing cleric... who must cast a baker's dozen healing/regeneration/shield spells every battle to keep everyone alive.

The net result is gallons of magical liquid consumed, people getting ripped apart and magically patched together at the same time in pure nonsensical fashion. I think its a problem of want for combat to be too long and survivable... when practically a mortal contest between an armored knight and a demon would end rather quickly, I imagine.

I bet they got part of it right... combat is fast and deadly, but they forgot that in battle PEOPLE DIE.  The combatants aren't expendable in a plot-heavy game, so the alternative is *all aboard the healing train*.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  The alternative is a game like a roguelike or Wizardry, where a character is of little importance to the story, but you can replace them if they fall.

I might reconsider being the fighter then... I don't want to have to put all my skill points in Guzzling.

I figured there would be some sort of healing requirement. Especially with the parallels to MMOs that it seems to draw. And, you know, being an RPG. :D I'll live with it. I'll try my best to live through the fights without Wynn. I'm not too interested in being pigeon holed into taking a character. I don't think we will be. I think with potions and Morrigan with a healing spell, we'll be fine.

Our charm and superior wit will see the darkspawn defeated. :D

Definately. If we were required to have a healer I would be very disappointed in BioWare.

As someone who's getting the game on the PS3, and who was nervous about how combat would play out on consoles, that was encouraging. Thanks!

A pretty awesome insight into the game. He's playing the same type of character I intend to play (rogue archer / ranger) - glad to see it works!

I know baiting is not exclusive to MMO's, but outside of tabletop games or the few LARPs I have played that is where I use it the most.  I am just happy they are letting this happen and the AI is not too smart for it like in other games.
