I read somewhere that someone said that Orisino helped the Mage who murdered Hawke's mother. That's news to me. If it's true where can I find out about it in game?

on Quentin's person, or in a chest nearby (I forget which), is a note to Quentin from someone named "O", wherein "O" expresses interest in Quentin's work and admits to leaving blood magic books in a dead drop location for Quentin.

It is widely believed that "O" is Orsino.

Don't know about "helped", but there's a letter in the crazy guy's basement from Orsino which basically states how impressed Orsino is with his work.

Edit: Oh, my bad, he did actually help him then... What a guy.

Relevant codex entry.

I'd say Orsino is a bit more involved than he pretends to be when you side with the mages... if he really wanted not to attract attention, he could have had Quentin killed, not given Quentin books to further his research.

Also at the end if you support the mages, Orsino will state that he thought Quentin's research was too evil and dangerous but that now he saw it was the only way - this is, of course, right before he flips out and turns into a harvester.

Also, Orisino mentions Quentin's work which comfirms for me that O = Orsino.
One of many WTF moments that ruined the game for me.

edit- too slow on the submit button

I think if you side with the templars you actually get to react to his confession, if you side with the mages it's as though Hawke's distracted while he's speeking.

Hawke: "Don't worry, Orsino, we'll make it through thi.... Hmm, this is a really tall room.."
....
Hawke: "I wonder how they built the roof so high up.."
Orsino: "Well I'll show them blood magic!!"
*havester abomination*
Hawke: "Uhh, sorry did I miss something there?"

In the Templar ending Orsino outright tells you he helped Quentin and gloats a little about Hawke's mother.

He seemed to do it because:

a) He didn't want to give Meredith any more ammunition

B) He seemed genuinely interested in Quentin's work

That stylish elf was seriously underdeveloped. The artists put so much work into the guy =(

Oh man, I was giggling by myself in the living room!

I thought so too, when Orsino turned into the corpse monster I felt like throwing my laptop on the wall, I was so freaking mad!!! And not because of good story telling but because I was tired of everyone being a blood mage!

Did your Hawke happen to be a blood mage too? If he or she was, then that's sort of on you.

Orsino was the biggest blood mage of them all.

Mages are either at your throat or your feet.

Nope! I made it a point not to get the Blood Mage tree so I could defende the mages without being a hypocrite. Stupid me, the biggest one was right under my nose in the last Act.

Bioware's writers have truly mastered the art of subtlety and fluid character development.

That comic is exactly what I thought when I reached that point. Like seriously? Pro-mage Hawke is a major tool.

My next Hawke is going to be resentful of Bethany and Hawke's dad for being apostates... forcing the family to always be on the run... never able to settle down and start a family. Going to go hard-line against mages whenever possible, gonna side with the templars without a second thought.

Freakin' mages... gawd.

That sums it up far too well.  :(

It's sad... this game reminds me of Final Fantasy VI in that it started off sooo well and just slowly went downhill until at the end you're just trying to pinpoint the exact moment that the writers started getting kickbacks from a competing game company.  Act I was great.  Act II was okay.  Act III was a literary catastrophe.

I had almost giving up on the plot making any sense by that point, but that particular WTF moment still made me facepalm. :pinched:

Then I had to get myself a couple of stiff drinks...:?

My first Hawke sided with the mages because despite all the evil mages and such, she was a mage and Orsino seemed like the one reasonable person in all of Kirkwall to follow.
And then.. that happened. Plot failure doesn't even begin to describe it.

So it is bad writing because a character got you completely fooled? Should all characters always put out their whole lifestory, and long time goals the first time you meet them? Should all mages immediately admit to be blood amges? I think the main reason a lot of people dislike the ending, is because they feel betrayed. It is a lot more satisfying to side with the Templars the first time, and just get your suspicions of Orsino confirmed.
