That's the problem that will hopefully be solved in ME3 when you're not longer stuck with the "support weapons".

I was playing around with a sentinel on insanity because I haven't tried it before. It's quite funny in the beginning. Can't be killed, but is about as dangerous as a newborn kitten.

haha, actually I thought Shuriken (+fire ammo from Jacob/Grunt) was pretty good close range weapon for low level ASentinel.

Little kitties have claws - Shep an elbow. Enemies down to health die faster by beating the crap out of em than shooting SMG or HP, weapons are superior against defenses though.

A DCS found shottie should add some sharp teeth; transforming little kitty into a sabretooth top-tier predator. :)

OP, are you on console or PC? I'd imagine the Shuriken would be a bit tricky to use on a console.

Otherwise, I agree that the Shuriken isn't my preferred SMG... I recognize its DPS potential, but I personally don't like its handling quirks as much as the other two. Also I prefer having the larger clip of the Tempest in CQC.

I prefer the Shuriken to the Tempest. I find that I can kill faster with the Shuriken.

With that said, the Locust is baddest SMG of all time. It's really more like an assault rifle in terms of firepower and accuracy; it does suffer from low magazine capacity though, so you gotta reload a lot.

I'm getting used to it actually, like its DPS...just giving it a try basically...

^I use it too, in the beginning. But I know I suck with it, so I grab the Locust ASAP.

Out of interest, why would the Shuriken be tricky on a console?

Love the Shuriken on my infiltrator myself. Shuriken and Viper is a pretty sweet combo in my opinion.

^I was thinking about the recoil mostly, but I don't actually have a console so I couldn't know for sure.

Ah, well that's just a case of getting used to using a controller rather than keyboard and mouse. Realistically when it comes to accuracy etc there's little difference between the two if you are an accomplished player.

I prefer the tempest, but I'm down with the Shuriken, too. It's a matter of usage, though. On my Adept, the smg is a protection strip, not something I use solely for the kill. It's there to support my biotic usage between cooldowns.

In this role both the tempest and shuriken are great. I need them usually at the ranges they're made for. At longer ranges biotics are more useful. And if anything gets too close, a tempest clip started low and allowed to rise, usually takes care of things. If not, by then the cooldown is over and I can flick my wrist and throw the target to death.

I  using the Shuriken at close and mid-range while playing my Widow Infiltrator, for the reason stated in the SMG Pandemonium thread.  Someday, when I have the equipment to record 360 gameplay, I'll make a vid of it.

Shuriken is better than the other two at close range against basic mobs, because you kill things faster with a few bursts. The problem is, if you have a shotgun (Vanguard/SG Infiltrator), that should be the role taken by shotguns. The Flashbang Agent uses Shuriken instead of shotguns because he wants to have both the Viper and the Mattock- I bet if he can take the Scimitar, he won't be using the Shuriken that much.

Locust is better for longer range- it is basically the Collector Assault Rifle, as many have pointed out.

The Tempest is a boss killer like the Revenant. The large clip allows you to lay down continuous fire between the boss's attacks (missile/machine gun from YMIR, laser beam from Praetorian). With the other two SMGs you'd waste a lot of those precious time reloading/tapping the trigger. In this game all bosses are about timing your shots to avoid their attacks and laying down continuous fire to wear down their tremendous health- that's why the Tempest is best for this role.

So if you have a shotgun, you'd be choosing between the Locust and Tempest, as a shotgun is always better than the Shuriken at what it does.

I'm not a big fan of the Shuriken, I normally just get my hands on a Locust right after Omega, Shuriken seems very weak in the damage dealing department when not dealing with shields.
