Im not done with my first playthrough, but I wanna start another class just out of curiosity. (obviously not to advance past my current progress) and my question is, if I do so, will it overwrite my current game like in Mass Effect 2? Or is it like Origins where you can have multiple saves?
Starting a new story overwrite current progress?

Both Origins and Mass Effect (confused about your ME2 comment) let you have multiple characters at the same time.
But to answer your question, yes DA2 lets you have multiple characters at once also.

I haven't heard anyone complain about not being able to make multiple saves, so I'd assume that you can.

Must be a console thing you're talking about. Characters are saved on their own basis. You making a new character will not overwrite the other.

The one catch is that the 'resume' button on start screen will always take you to whichever character/save is most recent. If you want to play one of hte other characters, you need to go to load game, and there will be a 'switch character' option.
