I don't base the game's appearance based on those pictures. One thing I learned from video games in the making: never trust the trailers, and never trust pre-game pictures. They are never as good as the final product. It's nice to look at them to guess what to expect, but not to think as the finalized visual. I expect slight visual difference, keep in mind they also have to work within console ranges, so they can't go overboard either on graphics pump either.

It'll definitely look like something new though, that's for sure.

Well Mass Effect has always looked good.

Especially the way rain effected the models in ME2.

Need more of that.

Were any of the screens actually representative of in-game graphics? They all seemed to be just showing off character models and concept art.

I honestly doubt it, most of the pictures look like concept art, or are stills from an FMV, similar to how ME2  has one that begins aboard the Normandy.  The chances of those being actual ingame photos is very low.

I didn't see any significant improvements. I expect more of the ME2 visuals but with larger levels, which will require some good engine optimization. Hair might look better though. Will it even have physics? Hopefully.

If graphics improve, I just hope it doesn't hinder the look of the PC version because of optimization to fit the consoles.  At the same time, if there is a graphics improvement, I hope my PC can run it.  And physics need to definitely be improved upon, I threw a person very far into the air, and he didn't ake any fall damage from it when he landed back on the ground.  And he went almost into orbit.

ME was always a console game. People forget the outrage when ME1 was released as a console exclusive before ported to the PC months later.

It was a good thing it was ported to the PC, just because it started that way doesn't mean it is the rightful place among console games. I would certainly be disappointed if that started over again, especially considering how smoothly it plays outside the console.

The PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 uses the ME3 engine, I think. That should be a good idea of what to expect. Honestly, I am not excited for potential graphics upgrades. The game looks great already and it's generally not what I look for in a game.

That's right, it uses part of ME3 engine.  I too hope the look remains the same.  I don't want the game trying to be something it's not.

If they had more time and more money, they probably could turn ME3 into more of a visual feast:

The game isn't using ME3's engine, only a few features as ligthing, etc. That was confinmed by one of the developers

I wouldn't want it, as "good" as it looks. More realistic visuals only rubs me off as a step backwards, instead of forward.

Screen shots in magazines always look (very much in some cases) better than actual games.

I just hope Bioware will have high-res texture pack for Mass Effect 3.

Trailers are no exception either.  Textures you say?  Maybe.

I just hope graphics aren't improved too much to the point where I can't even run it on PC anymore :( :P

I'll be honest with you. With the exception of a few clothing textures here and there, I think the graphics in ME2 would have been more than fine for ME3.

I want the way the levels load those graphics to be the bit that gets improved so I can have my propper seamless level transitions back.

The last thing I want is another game made up of self contained unconnected levels, no matter how good they look.

Uh, well, if you notice, all the FMVs are obviously done with the game engine, including the one that opens ME2.  They actually look worse than the cutscenes just done in-game after all the encoding and its attendant compression.  In fact, I always wonder why Bioware does that with only some cutscenes but not others (and they do it with pretty much all their games, not just ME).  It always seems so arbitrary, as generally the stuff they've turned into an FMV isn't more (or even as) complex as the in-game ones. All I can come up with is that it's a space saving measure, because the only time we actually see really high-quality rendering in Bioware FMVs is when they're actually trailers.

I still wouldn't trust pictures or trailers regardless.  Not even early gameplay samples.

lol no, you won't be seeing that on your crappy console son. That requires a top of the range modern PC with 3 graphics cards to run.

It has been floating around for like a week now.
