So I went with Merrill to get the whatever she needs to fix the mirror. Kill the Venadhal or Varethal or what is it. I gave her the thing straight away, no discussion even though the keeper asked me not to.
OK next step, go to speak with Merrill at her house. I go and I'm all nice and cooperative. I'll help you do this etc. I've even tried being romantic. She goes into a fury, says that all I want is to sabotage her, says she never wants to see me again, kicks me out of her house with -25 rivalry and the mission is over! Huh?
What am I doing wrong? I don't recall any trouble with Merrill in my first playthrough. Don't worry about spoiling, I already know more or less what is supposed to happen later.
Huh? What's eating Merrill?

Were you already on the rivalry path? It seems their reaction to gifts pushes you down whatever path you were already on.

You must have already been in the Rival stage. I don't think the tool works both ways. The Tool is designed that it will make you a rival instantly for not giving it to her. But It think if you're a rival it only gives a little friendship if at all. Her kicking you out is a rival dialogue after.

Well yeah we're rivals. So I don't get to go to the mountain, kill the keeper and all the clan, etc.?
I got firendship when I gave her the thing, then more friendship when I talked to her in her house first time (thanks for going with me etc), then in the next conversation, slap! Well it felt so much like talking to a real woman

You can, but the relationship with Merrill is one of rivalry. And you can avoid killing the clan if you accept responsibility (which actually means blaming what happened on Merrill).

That happens anyway. The same thing happened to me. If you are rivals with her it seems to automatically assume that you denied her the relic.

yeah that second conversation is scripted. She'll now be at your place apologizing most likely. Probably hit on you to.
