That's a quite interesting Extra Credits episode about sex in video games.

Bottom line is, until games start to treat sexuality in a mature way, video games (unlike movies, music, novels) can't be considered as art. And I agree. If video gaming wants to reach a mature audience, it has to treat all topics -including sex- in a mature way. And when we finaly get there, it'll reach a much broader audience compared to today.

Isabela's joust in DA2 was by far the best scene of its kind I have seen. It was fun, playful, and always in line with the character.

Also, you people DO realise that BioWare is Canadian, right?

You realize, yes that comic books also have hypersexuality?

I don't see the issue with video games and sex. Yes, sex doesn't define a character and yes they are hypersexual, but at the same time its the ideal.

Comic books, books, television shows, all have the archetypal hypersexuality and ideal of a character.

I do not see how you can fault a video game for doing what other forms of media do as well.

To the topic at hand: I appreciate a scene like this. For me I don't consider these scenes porn, actually at some point I feel uncomfortable and indecent as if watching something private. But at the same to me, this is how a relationship is.
Part of it, is yes, them talking, kissing.

But you need intimacy in a relationship. Part of that intimacy is sex.

You don't have to show it. Final Fantasy does romance without showing sex. The problem with Bioware is they are trying to show sex in a manner that does not show sex. It just looks silly and juvinile and these are supposed to be mature games.

But sex should be in games.

And its odd how something like Mass Effect could get an AO rating.

But then look at a game like God of War, that breaks both taboos of violence and lots and lots of sex. And it got a Mature rating. With a sex minigame.

Which is ironic, because God of War is anything but mature.

Of course. Hypersexuality is used everywhere. But the thing is, there are "comics" - and then there are "graphic novels" that treat it different. Same with movies and books.

So, I don't mind that many games treat it likewise. But, where are the mature games that treat sexuality different? Few and far between, even though there are tons of so called mature rated games.

So, on topic, I'm fine with the way TW2 shows it.

Its far beyond hypersexualized.

Kratos was the pure Machoism, he was hypersexualized to be the "ideal male role"

Woman were the pure form of the "ideal female"

Then you have loads, I'm overloads of violence.

I found DAO, DA2, ME, ME2 had some tasteful sex scenes to me and I felt the way they handled sex was very mature. Except clothes grinding.

And I didn't think any of it was hypersexualized...until Miranda, and Jack, and Kelly...Kelly dance.

And in DA2 the woman got some perkiness in their breast.

But even so I felt all relationships were tasteful. Shoot those pictures from the Witcher 2 appear tasteful and mild imo.

Nothing wrong with it. The intimate look in their eye, the gentle stroke, and the sharing of each other's company that's what I got from those pictures.

Yes, there is nudity. But there is nothing wrong with nudity. Its natural. And part of anyone.

To be nude in front of someone is the ultimate vulnerability. Its the ultimate putting yourself out there. And that's why sex, especially in relationship based party members, should be included.

I'm not saying full out sex scene.

In DAO, they had lovely sex scene. A gentle rub, a sweet kiss. There was no humping or grinding that I remember. It was a sweet and intimate moment. Two characters sharing their ultimate vulnerability.

To put yourself out there is always a chance of you getting hurt.

IF they are not gratuitous, IF they are tasteful/romantic and IF they don't discriminate between hetero/******, I would like to have them instead of a coward fade to black.
It's very easy to get hypocritical in this topic...

I think it depends on the game.

ME1 was only a 15 here. Different countries different ratings. God of War on the other hand was an 18.

I'd like it, sure. I'd be happy if they made a quality game, romances or not. The sex scenes are not what made this game a gigantic pile of dung.

True, I would expect the parental control to be exercised when seeing that a game is rated Mature/18 that it would be a game they wouldn't want their children playing (at the very least without playing through it themselves fully to be sure if they felt it was appropriate for they children).

Wow!  I agree with this.  After all, we have some very young people playing these games.  Sorry, but I feel that's a bit too much for a pre-teen. Why do we really need the nudity anyway?  Can we not get the jist of what's happening? I don't need the details.  Image IPB

And how did those very young people get their hands to a 18+ game? They should not be able to buy one themselves. If 8 years old Bob plays one it´s his parents fault if he sees a butt or gets nightmares from all the blood and killing.

I actually liked the way DA2 did it... captilising more on the emotional dialogue before and after than showing the action itself, which is more or less a solitary event.

You are quite right, of course.  It IS the parents' responsibility..

Forgive me for being underwhelmed at the sight of screen caps of animated boobs without context.

I'm a 36-year-old married woman. I've been having actual sex for 20 years. Oh yes, and I live in Europe where supposedly we're more comfortable with sex. Maybe I'm jaded, but what makes a sex scene sexy is context - the lead up, the relationship between characters, the storytelling.

I recently tried to do a 2nd playthrough of The Witcher but completely gave up shortly after entering Vizima. I was just about coping with the voice acting and timed mouse click combat, I just got so sick of random NPCs offering to shag me. (That and I got disgusted at myself for save scumming the dice mini game.)

Don't get me wrong, I'll probably buy The Witcher 2; for all I know, that picture could come from one of the most erotic and fascinating interactions in gaming history, but I'll take implied sex scene with story over displayed sex scene without story any day.

I will never understand how games, movies etc, are rated. Why would sexual acts be worse than violence? Personaly i find it more acceptable that people watch porn, than those awfull saw movies. But nooooo! sex is for some reason very bad. Take the Lord of The rings movies, they where rated T for teen. How many hundreds of people are shown cut down by orcs in those movies. But that is not as bad as seeing a couple of people getting it on.

Didn't we just have this exact conversation?

And I'll say the same thing I said then. I'd rather have more romantic roleplay possibilities with blackouts than one or two carefully crafted scenes where I'm not even playing a character of my creation.

If I want to see scenes of sex with pre-done characters. Well there's porn for that. I play Bioware games for the Roleplay.

Some of us are adults and like love scenes as part of our games/reading matter...

And in order for there to be parental control, you need parents to actually exercise control.  As other posters have flagged up these are mature rated games.  Who is responsible if a kid gets hold of them? The parents I say. Society has already done its bit.

Why should my entertainment and that of other adults be reduced to the levels of infants simply because some parents don't do their jobs properly?

I don't see this happening, the soccer mom federation would never allow it.
