Well, here's my problem. While I fiercely defend mages every chance I get, which usually gets me a lot of friendship points, I don't agree with his whole 'Justice' thing. For example in the first conversation at his clinic I told him that it's "still creepy" he let himself get possessed, etc. netting +5 rivalry.

On my current run I'm heading towards the end of Act 1 and I'm a little worried that if I play it out "naturally" I will end up somewhere in the friendship direction but below the friendship bonus. However I will miss out on his personal quest(s) that way am I right?

Are my worries unnecessary? Is there a legit way to quickly push friendship to the max so I don't have to worry about Friendship/Rivalry points anymore?

My furthest savegame is at the beginning of Act 2, so please keep spoilers to an absolute minimum.

No, you will not miss out on the quests for any of the companions. You gets the quests regardless of friendship or rivalry. You only miss out on their "Questioning Beliefs" conversations if you are not at 50% friendship/rivalry in Act 2, and 100% by Act 3.
