And it seems Bethany never tried to escape either. Maybe the sappy git in me wanted Bethany at home making funny comments at Hawke about whoever they were in a relationship with...while Gamen seethe with jealously.

I felt bad about the family, and really didn't like how it was dealt with. In my mind, I think it would have made the story richer if all of the family had survived through out the story and supported Hawkes character. Further, it would have at least put a bit of happiness in the story, saving the mother for example and would have given the player a small sense of accomplishment. Call me old fashioned if you will, but I for one would have at least felt better at the ending knowing Hawkes entire family had made it through to the end. Perhaps I am the only one that feels this way.

I think what he meant is that whatever Hawke does or chooses, the outcome remains unchanged.

That does seem to be true. Hawke helps the mages they still dismiss her and duke it out. Hawke helps the Templars...ect ect.

Does anyone believe that had Anders not of gone bat-poop mad and blew up the Chantry, maybe things would not have escalated as far as they did in the end?

I personally enjoyed the family aspect of the game, I'm not sure if it's a new concept, but to have a LIVING fmaily for the most part, be integral to your character is a style I've not encountered yet. Usually the hero of a game is trying to get revenge for the death of their family ect.
I do wish that we'd of had more time with the siblings. I feel like I didn't know Carver at all, compared to Behtany and even then I wish she was around more. Maybe she could of left the Circle/he leave the Grey Wardens on a sabbatical :P in Act 2 and stayed with you for a while.

Anders only helped speed up the war it was coming no matter what.  Or at least a Kirkwell revolt.  You can not treat anyone like the mages were and not expect some kind of outlash.

As for the family part I loved it.  I thought it was great to have a sister running around with me however I will say that I did not like Carver.  I was surprised they lasted as long as they did plus by the end you start adding to the family by meeting a cousin you didn't know you had.  Too bad we don't get more with her other than a letter.  I liked Gamlen as well even though he is mostly scumbag.  Mothers death was a shock the first time I saw that part and part of finally understood why Anakin did what he did Image IPB

I wasn't happy with everything that happened to the hawk family, origen noble's was way better and you had less time to meet the family. I hope they do not continue killing family member if/when they FIT with the story thats been told.

I felt terribad after I finished DA2, was incomplete, I don't even know where hawk went or why, wasn't suppose to rise to power? Where is the mage warden? why she left king alistair? is the warden and the champion together? so many questions....

I need a good book.. hoping July comes quickly so I get Dance with dragons.

I found the family fairly effective, though I certainly thought they could have been used more effectively. The loss of the first sibling doesn't have any context behind it to lend it weight (and the line "Wake up, the battle's over!" undermines the scene further, being a pretty funny observation of how battle works in the DA games).

There's some complaints about the other sibling being out of the way by the end of Act I, but I don't take a lot of issue with that, given that Act I is half the game. I had plenty of time to get to know Carver. My Carver died in the Deep Roads, so I didn't have the same cognitive dissonance about not being able to interact with him afterward, but I understand why BioWare wouldn't want to put a lot of resources into stuff only a tiny fraction of players would see. (Assuming half of players have Bethany and the other half have Carver, there are still three possible outcomes for the surviving sibling, only one of which leaves that sibling accessible to Hawke.)

As for Leandra, I do feel she could have been more involved - offered more quests, had more insight into or response to Hawke's decisions. She could have been Wynne-esque, in other words. And while I would have appreciated the option to show more emotional variety in the moments surrounding her end, I did pick the aggressive option (my Hawke was grape flavored, ie, charming/sarcastic with occasional diplomatic and rare aggressive responses) when Merrill came to comfort Hawke, and he snapped at her, causing her to do her wounded puppy thing. It was not pretty, but it felt very real.

By the end, my Hawke was the only Hawke left standing, and that gave me an odd, but not entirely unpleasant feeling. It felt like what my Hawke chose to do mattered more as a result. He was the family line.
