Being a male, I don't really need this support group, but I will add that having gone through as a male city elf warrior, who befriended and became best friends with Alistair, and put him on the throne, sacrificing myself at the end got me a little misty eyed. Firstly, because I was attached to my character, and secondly, because of the dialogue between the two of them. Alistair telling my character that he'd been saved too many times by Gideon (my char), and asking to do return the favour, just this once. To which my character replied that Alistair would make a good king, and that he would be that king, before running off to nobly end his life.

Alistair's the kind of friend who's worth dying for, especially when he's got a duty to thousands of others as well.

The funeral scene after that... that was what got me misty eyed :*(

But, my character may not be as dead as originally assumed, if Leliana's dream has any substance to it, like her last.

Spoilers, as always.

I made Loghain a Warden - I would not let my PC sacrifice her beliefs for love. Then he dumped me and left. So, distraught and horrified at my choices, I decided the best solution would be writing fan fiction in which PC wandered for a while before becoming a researcher; throughout all her wanders, she keeps an ear to the ground, searching for Alistair.

I become very attached through my first playthrough. I play the way it seems the most right to me the first time, and even if the results are disastrous. The truth is that even though the ending is sad, I enjoyed the fact that a game could evoke such emotions.

It would be the same for any other NPC in such a difficult position, I think, but is especially true of Alistair.

And Leliana's voice actress deserves many gift baskets and love, as well as the writers who wrote her. I love her accent and I have found that she is my best friend. Wynne, similarly, is a favorite for her cheeky elderly aunt-sweet grandmother cross.

I think the funny thing about Alistair is he is such the total obvious "Female Love Interest". Everything about him has been designed from the ground up to make women swoon over him. He's funny, sensitive to the point of whiny at times, and inexperienced bumbling fool at times, especially when it comes to love. He comes off as such a charming little boy that all the girls clearly want to "take care of" and get swept off their feet by. The whole thing just strikes me as a bit too obvious.

Even more amusing is that all of the women who fall head over heals for him in the game wouldn't even give him the time of day in the real world. This is the kind of man women say they want all time, but in reality would just ignore. He's a fantasy, and a well written one. I think it shows the talent of the writers to be able to build a character like him.

Oh gosh, not the whole "women hate nice guys" thing again... There's a whoooole like 15 pages on that in the "Alistair, marry me" thread!

But I completely agree with him being a little obvious. I didn't really like him all that much (I think it was the hair) at the beginning. But after a while he grows on you, as I have seen meny guys say too. All the characters did though :P

Psh, I'm married to a funny, sensitive man who is often a bit foolish... so I don't buy that I wouldn't fall for that kind of guy IRL.  Just don't tell my husband I said the foolish bit.  ;-)

I'm not surprised that so many women love Alistair, considering the fact you can only romance him or Zevran in the game if you're not into women. :P I mean, he's definitely better looking than Zev so there's no real contest there. xD

Haha, ditto.  Smartasses FTW.  Though I have not experienced Alistair yet because he just didn't seem to be a good match for my Dalish elf.

And I would definitely not say that he is better looking than Zevran.  Different does not equal better.  :)

Alistair isn't my type, and I wasn't expecting to like him at all. All I could think of was Kaiden and how much I hated him. How I hooked up with annoying Liara just to avoid Kaiden.

What won me over about Alistair was the humor and his virginity.:D

Before the game came out I had a feeling i would be desiring the non romancable characters again. In Mass Effect it was Garrus, Wrex and Nihlus( which I just found out that the voice actor's name is Alastair Duncan!) That has to be an in joke of some kind. What can I say I have a thing for aliens.

In this game i did want to romance Sten and Oghren as well.

Also, when he called my beautiful it made me uncomfortable. I ended up ruining my chances of hooking up my first play through because 1) I don't take compliments well and 2). I killed Isolde.

I'm quite content being a consort instead of queen. I don't see the use of me being queen where I would rather be out there fighting, alongside my buddies.

Either way I think I love Zevran more.

Ditto.  Nice boys do get the girls.  I've got a boyfriend who's silly, goofy, and very sweet--though he does share Alistair's propensity for apologizing for EVERYTHING, including the things that need no apology.  What a doofus

Nice guys do well in love.

Nice guys who are really insensitive jerks pretending to be nice because they think women are then obliged to sleep with them don't do so well, and then come on the interwebs to complain.

Oks!
So I've been actually wanting to touch on this for some time, but since I already had an Alistair thread I didn't want to seem super stalker - plain stalker is fine... mmm.. Alistair's hair.. I mean! :P

Ok, the whole dumping thing imo isn't intended for female PC's.  I'd never choose Alistair to be king first of all.  Even if you do toughen him up during the meeting with his sister (this is only to make him accept his place as king) I never found it suited his character at all.

He never wanted to be king, yeah he's Maric's son - who cares?  Placing him as king would only ignore who he truly is (before any influence from yourself or any other character).  Not to mention he loves being a Grey Warden.

Yes yes he helps the Grey Wardens despite him being a king or no, but still, running a country?  He makes it completely clear the throne isn't  where he wants to be.

Also, Anora makes an amazing queen.  She deserves the position from the start.  She's not evil, she's a survivalist.  After choosing her to be queen *big spoiler* she does -wonderful- things for the nation.  She brings in more money, and even sets up plans to build a university. *end of big spoiler*

If you're a male PC and wanting to get Alistair out of your hair.. well sure I can see you putting him up there by himself.  For Male PC's Alistair is like a little brother imo, so toughening him up and tossing him on the throne is sort of like your big brother giving you that push on your bike.  Though, if you're a female PC and love him... why put him up there anyways?  It'd be best to stay together as Grey Wardens and allow Alistair to be who he's always been.

A happy, sweet, loving, and goofy Grey Warden.

Heh
To be honest though, from my wife's perspective, he's a doll. Someone who she could poke and get the cutest reactions from - the same reason why my wife forced him to become king!!! heh... although she reloaded the save since she likes happy endings. So I wouldn't worry about that mate, women are still women in RL =P

If you want the answer to your question - do women like 'nice' guys or 'bad' guys? The answer is simply:
THEY WANT IT ALL

Meh, marriage heh :P

I didn't find him that charming at the beginning, but as others say Alistair is a character that really grows on you. I found him silly at first, but my character was a nice and polite girl and as he were the only male in party I decided to try to know him better, but with no strings attached. Well, that didn't work. Before I knew it, my character and Alistair were in love ;)

I think this is something only the game designers can tell us, but I have this feeling that there are mechanics in the game that allows Alistair to be easily emotionally attached to female characters. This, in addition to the fact which somebody mentioned that he is designed with all the traits that turns a girl on. And when he clearly shows his interest in game, well..... who can resist?

For me, I think this "support group" is good for one thing. I need to come to terms with the fact that Alistair sacrificed himself to the Archdemon without even knowing that there was a way out of it all through Morrigan's ritual. Like Ellythe, I had decided that I would be the one to go, so that Alistair did this, I cannot forgive myself for.

Well, I have to join the ranks of married women whose husbands are probably tired of hearing about Alistair. My husband got to listen to me complain earlier because Alistair had dumped me when I put him on the throne. But he was good about it, and told me to reload and just try other dialogue options. I did, and was able to keep Alistair. I ended up with the ending where I'm chancellor, but I was still disappointed. He promised he'd see me up in the rooms after I talked to the crowd...

Anyway, yes, I'm stuck in the same boat as many of the women here. I have never ever crushed on a video game character before, but Alistair's done it. I'm not sure if I can't wait to get to my human noble playthrough, or if I just want to leave the game alone for a while to get over it :P

AntiKristine...

What you said is interesting actually, I noticed at first after the city elf quest my wife was rather racist against humans in the game! But she got swept off her feet by Alistair nonetheless lol, I found it amusing that Bioware finally made a worthy male romance for a female PC. Back in Jade Empire and Mass Effect, my wife rather be lez lol

My wife hated his guts when he... *spoiler*

To be honest I'm actually glad she chose Alistair though, back in Jade Empire and Mass Effect, she kept choosing the ladies and I secretly wondered if my wife was actually bi. Heh
Anyways I doubt there is any room for jealousy, these are media characters, same thing with celebrities, human beings will always have their secret crushes.

If you wife ever runs off in search of a legendary artifact with most of your family, then you can start worrying.

I laughed so hard I almost fell of the chair. Thanks :o

On topic: I love Alistair to bits although my favourite is definitely Zevran (yeah I know I'm in minority here) and I think this twist to the romance actually makes him a lot better character because honestly would't things just be way to sugary without it? As for my noble I know she'd choose to become a queen in a tribute to her family's sacrifice and I also never really had such a big problem with Morrigan's offer being a more pragmatic type of person...

I know! I really did NOT expect to like Alistair. I had him pegged as the stick-up-his-arse, righteous do-gooder... or something else overdone along that line, before I even started playing. I dunno where that came from, truthfully, but that's what Alistair was like in my head before I even met him. I figured I'd at least check him out, I wanted to get to know all my companions, but I was fairly certain I'd get with Zevran because Zev was supposed to be the 'bad boy' and I figured my Rogue would get along better with one like that.

Things didn't quite work out that way. Poor Zevran never had a chance, because I was totally commited to Alistair before Zev even appeared. Then on my second playthrough when I think I'm making more friend-oriented choices with Alistair, and poking fun at him, it turns out he really, REALLY likes that, even when I think I'm being a bit mean! That almost ruined my second chance at hooking up with Zevran right there, seeing that other side of Alistair. But I'm determined to see more on Zevran this time. I'm just rather disappointed that it doesn't seem as much time was spent on the Zev-PC romance, since a lot of little things are missing (or haven't appeared yet, such as the 'kiss him' option and romance-related party interactions).

At this rate, though, I'm never going to get around to exploring the Leliana relationship!

I think his little secret is that he always plays along. Regardless of which dialogue option you choose, you get a good answer. This way you're very likely to only ever hear things from him you want to hear, he's not going to upset you if you're nice to him, and he's going to joke with you if you make jokes. I think there's only one exception where he violently disagrees with you...

I first romanced Liliana, but I got bored quickly because their was little conflict in the relationship. Once it got established, it was too good, making it boring.

I totally wanted to romance morigan, but sadly she was straight, so I decided to romance alistair cuz I had nothing else to do. I'm a straight guy irl playing a female char, so romancing alistair was extremely weird :P. I can totally see why you ladies fell in love with him at the end..hell even I kinda love in a quasi bisexual way. The entire tragic love backbone of the story was amazing.

I'm glad I'm not alone! It must be a devastating combination of sexy voice, dialogue, and cute character generation. I mean, his raised eyebrows and smirks are dead on adorable. I love the part in the sex scene where he is smiling... I haven't yet beat the game with Alistair sacrificing himself. I think I need to be alone to do that so I don't get made fun of if I cry. I hope this game gets this voice actor lots of work. I also love Steve Blum (Oghren) but not in a molest-y way. He just does good voicework. Back to the Alistair love!

I think you have a point, as regards some women, but you know, there are always exceptions...  And I am not ashamed to say that I married the nice guy <3 that other women ignored.  Happy for 20 years now, my mother adores him...

This is the place for me.  I, too, am a married woman but...I am hopelessly in love with Alistair.  I have various saves as well, just for his and my pc's dialogue.  What is a girl to do?  Just hoping that DA 2 carries on with my pc so I can continue my obsession with him.

I'm having Alistair issues, on my most recent play-through. I'm working on A Zev romance for my Dalish elf, but along comes Ali being all adorable and I just can't click the " That's sweet Alistair but I'm not interested " choice. Charming Templar bastard. :)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I married a romantice and sensitive guy.  He gives me flowers, tells me he loves me, and cries at the end of sad or touching movies.  He's also very masculine and passionate.  So, for me, Alistair is in fact a more realistic love interest than you would give him credit for.
