I have been playing an S&S Warrior and had about an hour on Nightmare... I'm finding more and more Assassins which on Hard are no harder than any other enemy to be honest, but I can't seem to handle them on Nightmare. Anyone got any builds/ companion/ tactics I can use to help control/ kill Assassins? I'm a pro with a 2 hander but I've never played Sword and Shield.
Thanks

While there are a lot of 2 hander vids here, there seems to be a lack of S&S warrior vids demonstrating what they can do. Anyways trust me they are almost as strong offensively and definately stronger defensively than a 2 hander.

Handling assassins. The tactic is pretty much the same for every class, as soon as you see them, employ tactics that finish them quick. These are;

1. Stop them from going stealth with skills and spells, such as, winters blast (upgraded), petrify (upgraded), shield bash (upgraded).
2. Then focus fire (tell everyone to attack them), use shield bash's stagger effect to CCC them with chain lightning, this is great cause you actually control when to stagger.
3. If they go stealth, move squishes away from them and let Dog or Aveline take the backstab, then repeat steps 1 and 2, always heal Aveline after she takes a backstab.

If you're playing an S&S Fighter, you have access to Shield Defense and Shield Wall. It can be useful to activate that power when you see an Assassin go stealth and just take the hit, then turn it off and beat the stuffing out of said Assassin afterwards.

This depends on how willing you are to lose the health potion the Assassin will steal from you during the backstab.

Another useful trick is to use Exploding Arrow's obscure effect (if upgraded) to give yourself a chance to avoid the backstab. They seem to miss on obscured targets often. They also seem to occasionally "glitch" and miss if you are spamming distance closer attacks between a couple of different enemies.

My favorite anti-assassin combo is upgraded Petrify + Archer's Lance. Even on Nightmare it is usually a 1-shot or very close to it on any assassin enemy that isn't a mini-boss.

If your attributes are properly set, you really only need Shield Defense to soak a backstab. A well timed Stonewall will work as well. The passives in the Sword & Sheild tree will help reduce what damage is left.

Post stealth, just about any area of effect spell will bring them out of hiding. Glyph of Paralysis is golden for these moments, allowing you to see where they are trapped. From a s/s view you can Shield Bash, Assault, or Scatter an enemy right next to them, this will reveal via damage.

Another path would be to disable them before stealth. Any CC generally works, followed by Hex of Torment, Sheild Bash, CCC to follow. Focus fire and end them.

fyi: the tactic condition: nearest visable rogue does not work.
