If anyone has found a way to pursue it in-game, please let me know.
Been playing through the game a few times now and still haven`t been able to figure out the following:
What did Fenris think/hope was in that goddamn chest?
During "Bait and Switch", he starts to respond "I had hoped...", but stops himself stating it was "bait and nothing more", jolly good, but I´m still mighty curious what he thought was in it?
Book? What book?
Upon completing "Loose Ends" for Athenril and lying your pants off about what happened to the cargo, she says:
"I keep my books right here. If you`re ever looking for more work, just sign yourself up", only I haven`t been able to find any books, any way to sign myself up for anything nor any more quests involving her.
Who, what, where?
During the quest "A Secret Rendezvous" you learn that "Someone powerful in Kirkwall wants the raiders to attack Amaranthine ships".
As far as I know, that´s all you`ll learn about this plot, and it´s never mentioned again, it doesn`t seem like awfully useful information to the suspicious lady, although she seems satisfied.
Or are there any in-game means to learn more?
Lying doesn`t pay off does it?
During the Anders romance arc when Hawke has the option to lie about his/her relationship with Fenris, what are the consequences of choosing this option, I haven`t played a Hawke yet who had reason to or would lie here, but as a player I´m curious.
Curious enough to want it spoiled before I get around to play a Hawke that would take the option.
Do as I say, not as I do?
During the quest "Justice", upon entering the sewers to collect the Sela Petrae, if Hawke is in a romance with Fenris, Anders will comment on the relationship.
The dialogue wheel here gives the option of saying "You just don`t know him", "He left me" and "Mind your own business", or something along those lines.
The first will prompt Fenris to enter the conversation if he is present, but the second won`t, so what are the results of choosing the second option?
Technically it is true no matter what, Fenris did leave as he always does in the course of his romance, although he comes back afterwards.
I suspect it shuts down the Fenris romance, but haven`t felt like replaying most of Act III just to find out yet, if anyone out there did, please feel free to speak up.
Beat you to it
In Act III you can chat up Ser Cullen and warn him about "one of your companions", if Anders is present he will say "What are you doing?!", and Cullen will say they will investigate, but that´s seemingly all that comes off it.
Oddly enough, if Anders is not present, Cullen will say they are trying to apprehend Anders, but the razzia they did on his hideout revealed nothing, which really isn`t that big of a mystery when the codex states "The champion and Anders have been living together openly for some time".
Either way it doesn`t seem to have any effect on anything anywhere, or has someone found anything in the game that is affected by this exchange or affects this exchange, I suspect the key you give Anders might?
Thanks for reading and for any potential replies.

Athenril mentioning her books- I think that was intended to be for side quests and the content got cut or was never added.

I don't think we hear anything about Rendezvous and don't expect to, don't know about the others (including the chest one, obviously!)

I can answer these ones, at least. You have me curious on the others. Well, on the first, I can't answer specifically because of course, we aren't ever told. I SUSPECT it's as someone else stated. Perhaps registers or rosters that would give Fenris ANY indication on his past. I would love for David Gaider to answer that one for us, since I doubt it spoils anything for the third game. It's just a gnawing curiosity.
As far as I'm aware, we've had nothing confirmed about Athenril's books, but the mercenary side does much of the same thing. Basically, I think there were SUPPOSED to be side quests available from her but they didn't make the cut.
As far as the being questioned by Anders question, and I think Isabella can ask and Varric is bugged. Varric is supposed to have a quest for all your love interests and concerns for them, but only Anders tends to work and Fenris occasionally. I think implying that the relationship is over because Fenris left at any point DOES shut down the relationship. I think because it implies that Hawke has accepted Fenris left and that's that and Hawke has moved on in their life, so Fenris would accordingly not risk himself by telling you he wants to get back together. I don't have concrete proof it ends the relationship, but it seems to. Fenris can be a vexing one. It's very easy to lose him several times in the relationship AND he makes Hawke wait 3 years before explaining why he freaked out. But there is the distinct impression he stays loyal to Hawke through that time.

Fenris heard that the chest was the one Danarius used to disappear into in his stage act, and was hoping to surprise him in his next show. It should have contained a top hat, several hankies tied together and a lyrium infused nug, but they cut the content.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the contents of the chest were supposed to lead to a quest that never actually got implemented. It feels weird and unfinished the way it is now.

Given the whole of his story and his emotional rather than hard-line reaction, I'd guess it was some clue to his past, whether or not he had a family, etc.

I'm pretty sure that whatever Fenris thought was in the chest was related to his lost memories. He spends a lot of the game chasing after those memories--getting them back for a moment causes him to cut off his romance with Hawke for a time, he goes to meet with his sister even knowing that it's probably a trap, etc. I think that's the only thing that would motivate Fenris to play along with what he knew was a trap.

Since the chest was simply bait for Fenris, there did not have to be anything in the chest because the expectation was he would killed or captured by the time he had a chance to open it. So the empty chest could simply have been always empty. As for what Fenris believed was in it, you are probably right that it was something he though was about his identity before the branding.

It could have been a dead drop of information about where Danarius is located. Right after you tell him there was nothing in it, Hawke says something like "so that's it then?" and he answers "not yet" and searches the lieutenant's body.
However there is an entire sequence of events in Act 3 that leads Fenris to Danarius. So I do not think there was ever a missing quest in the chest. It was just bait to get Fenris and introduce him to Hawke. I do not think Fenris was ever intended to get close to Danarius until Act 3. The various companions' personal quests are spaced out over the acts even though they are all introduced in Act 1.

goddamn chest?
Marsellus Wallace's soul!
Book? What book? (Athenril's Quest Book)
I think this is a game bug.
As for the rest, there seem to be a few unresolved plot holes that I suspect are a result of the game being a bit rushed.

Yes, the chest is empty and I didn`t expect anything more, it´s just bait as he says, however I was very curious as to if there was some in-game hints as to what he had hoped was in it.
A few posters here come up with different suggestions, but as it is it seems none have found anything decisive in-game, it´s left to our imaginations, which is fair enough.
As for the probability of cut content, a shame really.
I don`t think he ever found Taffy either, it´s the same as with the guy that has "been waiting to get in" for 6 years, and the guy that has been kicking the walls for the same amount of time, bet his toes hurt like mad by now

it's funny how they're still there and one even specifically mentions waiting for to see the Viscount... when he's dead. especially since if they've been waiting there all that time then they must have seen the Qunari come in and execute him
trauma induced amnesia perhaps?

1) in my first playthru I let Varric keep the fraction of the idol. Bianca in that playthru earned 4 rune slots. My second time thru I wanted the idol rune and bianca only rcieved the initial rune slot. Is this a bug or design?
2) has anyone found the level up potion recipes? The cheat book mentions it in hightown during act 3 but there is no other info revealed. I think I've found all of the chests and boxes for both day and night.

Design. If Varric keeps the idol fragment, Bianca gets 3 more rune slots, and I think his armor gets +1 more as well (might have to save and reload to get the armor slots).

The recipe for Elixir of Heroism is in Act 2, during the Qunari Crisis on a body in Hightown (around the area between the dwarven merchant's area and the Blooming Rose). The other level up potions aren't craftable AFAIK.

Not in DA2. But in theory... probably?

For 1, it´s not a bug, if you give Varric the idol he uses it to upgrade Bianca, gaining extra rune-slots, if you refuse him the idol, Sandal makes it into a Primeval Lyrium Rune which increases attack speed.
For 2, the level up recipe is found during the Qunari Attack if I recall correctly, right before you meet Orsino while fighting your way towards the keep.
It´s called something-something-heroism.
Hope that helps.

Nope. The mages live in the circle. Unless they are apostates hiding the fact that they are mages.
