I turned everything to MAX with the latest patch installed (v1.02) and the game runs better than ever!
Framerates with everything maxed (even SSAO and HQB and DDOF on) it hovers around 20-25 FPS, even during combat, in most normal areas. Outdoor environs are not actually playable though. FPS drops to around 15. BUT, turning off DDOF, SSAO and HQB (and leaving AF and AA at their max settings) I get 45FPS in MOST areas, with around 70 in city areas or indoors, and about 35-40FPS in high-traffic outdoor areas, which is just fine.
The most notable difference to me is that the game is more "even-keeled" than ever, regarding framerate in all areas. What I mean is, no matter what framerate I get (all have definitely been playable now) the game's framerate and performance doesn't fluctuate wildly...even during changes from walking around casually, to getting jumped by enemies, even into the thick of combat, the framerate stays much steadier with only about a 5FPS drop when things get "exciting". That, to me, is probably the biggest improvement. Not too many things irritate me more than a game that
glaringly goes from smooth gameplay to choppy gameplay at random and frequent intervals.
I just wish they'd fix the damn quest bugs now! So many things (especially in Act 3) are still broken! At first I thought having the quest pointers telling me where to go was a little "cheesy", but now that so many don't show up, I'm spending a helluva lotta time wandering around aimlessly looking for objectives because a lot of arrow-markers are missing, or the worst still: quests that are unfinishable! Sad. And having to constantly make sure my mouse cursor is at or near the bottom of the screen (or having to constantly hold the RMB down all the time!) to be able to enjoy the aforementioned smooth framerates is just plain ridiculous.
Overall: a vast improvement, but still a good ways to go.
