Rogue: Cunning or Dexterity Focus?

Hey guys!

I am getting the UE for the PC soon, and my first playthrough on the PC will be a dual daggers rogue. Now, my question is whether to focus on dexterity or cunning. I am leaning towards dexterity, as I believe that the damage output will be high enough at about level 23 with about 40 cunning anyway. This would allow me to get around 70 dexterity. (Including equipment bonuses here). So i was just wondering, how large an effect does having such a high dexterity have on your defence? Approximately what proportion of attacks would I be able to just avoid? I'm curious because I saw my friend playing a dex based rogue near the end of Awakening, with insane dps and he was near enough untouchable.

Cheers

I would say you will have around 130 def, which is a fair few. It may be less, but I would say you could get more than 70 dex at level 23 with gear. At level 21 i had 59 dex and 71 cunning, and that was with an import into GOA, with pretty lame gear. It couldve been more. I wouldn't worry about it, dex builds are not inferior to cun builds, they just do a bit less damage, but it is definitely sufficient.

Unless you want to solo cunning would be your best bet. It also boosts coercion and stealing (though you dont really need that) and other skills (assassins and bards profit from it!).
If you have a proper tank who can hold aggro you should be able to just hack away without being focussed to much. It's up to you though.
A mixture can work out just as fine (2:1 dex:cun). You don't really need to have the extra damage that a true cunning build would deliver.

With 130 defense you won't be hit too much. I am soloing a rogue atm and he has about the same defense - maybe 1 out of 20 attacks hit me. If you have a party that can CC (crowd control) the enemy you can be fine with less defense.

I won't be soloing, its just that whenever I play, I like to have a fairly independent character. Basically, I just keep my companions around for the banter and a bit of extra dps. So having a rogue who relies on other members a.k.a a tank, isn't my thing. And having only 5% of attacks hit me sounds cool. Is that with or without evasion?

With my rogue, I leveled dex and cun evenly. At level 35, he had 75 of both, and though I played him as a dps character, he was durable as a tank. The 40 constitution didn't hurt either.

I might spend a few more points in cunning, extra armour penetration to take on those darkspawn.

Well on my level 35 warrior and mage, I ended up with 230 attribute points. So I'm thinking of going minimum strength for drakeskin armour, then a fairly even balance of dexterity and cunning, with a dexterity bias. Something like:

Strength: 20
Dexterity: 85
Magic:10
Willpower: 15
Cunning: 70
Constitution: 30

Plus gear should easily get 100+ for both dexterity and cunning, and with paragon stout runes, lifegiver and other gear a healthy 60-70 constitution.
Thanks for the help.Posted Image

I wouldnt bother with drakeskin armour. Felon's Coat (~88g bought at Wade's) + Bard's Dancing Shoes (Bodahn)+ Red Jenny Seekers (Crows quest line) would suit you well. High defense, good armour, good damage. Put in Spellward, Lifegiver, Key to the City & Andurils Blessing and nothing can touch you... apart from a overwhelm gangbang by shadow werewolves... took me an hour to solo past them.

I would advise no more than 20 con, I personally dont put any in because you dont NEED to, between high dex and having a tank it is totally pointless and a complete waste of points. But thats just me, what do i know :P

Also, the gear 10cents mentioned is the best in the game for any rogue, other than I prefer Cadash Stompers on my feet as I never have a problem with aggro (stuff is either dead too quick or dealt with by the tank). Paired with The Rose's Thorn and Duncan's/Crow dagger (or Fang if you are a city elf as its the best) and you have yourself one completely badass rogue.

Yeah I was going to go rose's thorn/crow dagger. And yeah for rogues that gear is way better than anything else. Just that Wade's Superior Dragonbone plate is the best warrior set, so I just assumed(wrongly) the equivalent rogue set was also the best. The main reason I was taking the con, is that when soloing the Harvester on nightmare, I couldn't do it on my mage, but I could on my dual wielding warrior who had 3 paragon stout runes.

Not that I claim to have soloed the entire game on nightmare. Just the Harvester, for the bragging rights Posted Image

Pure cunning does awsome damage but its annoying when you miss with a cunning build also needs a bit more strategic i'd only put dex on 24 (fade included) and all the rest into cunning

I'm thinking 24 dex on nightmare will suffer heavily from not having the attack bonuses from a high dex build.

A duelist cunning build may have better luck with that attack rating, the sustains raise attack and defence a fair amount, so it could help you there.

1 dexterity = 1 defense (see the tooltip on the stats screen).

Used to be a bug with dexterity that didn't properly add damage bonuses. Not sure if that's been fixed.

I always preferred to go with a cunning build. You save on lockpicking/coercion talents, get a great boost from Lethality and the additional armor pen does massive damage.

24 dex won't be enough to get the 4th level dual-weapon ability talents (like Punisher, Whirlwind, Evasion, and Dual Weapon Mastery). You need between 28-36 dex for those.

None of the fourth tier abities are needed though, momentum + backstabs = easymode. But i would get more than 24, at least 36, just because it makes you a lot tougher, and duellist isn't as good a spec as assa/bard for a cunning rogue. With gear you can comfortably have around 50 dex with base 36

I recommend dexterity for soloing and archery in Awakening (and beyond); cunning for the other scenarios.

To answer your specific question...

20 strength in Origins, 24 strength in Awakening and beyond;
36 dexterity in Origins, 52 dexterity in Awakening and beyond;
Rest in cunning;

Obviously, you can use equipment (and other methods if using mods) to give you a boost with exception to skill requirements. Willpower and Constitution help, but are better boosted by means other than attribute points. Magic is next to useless for a rogue.

A little constitution couldn't hurt, though dexterity and cunning should be the priority. I gave my rogue 40 constitution because I felt that he was doing plenty of damage with 75 dex/cun, and I had Golems of Amgarrak in mind. You can never be too durable for that, especially if your rogue happens to have 6 golems beating on them at once.
