Fun fact, if you go to the docks at night when Aveline is waiting for you, all the guards with her turn hostile and attack you.
They KNOW they're cannon fodder and they're not going to take it lying down, damnit!

I just assumed he was just really left handed. I mean we don't really get to see the other hand. Plus it was clawed. It took how many years before he um sealed the deal. That is a long time for muscle build up. Plus it's the un clawed hand.

It's not cheating. The main reason to play it on PC is the addons. Plus the act 2 set is a chantry priest robe. They are female dresses.

I don't know about tmp but the "fake" Champion armour I use at that point is statistically inferior to anything else available at that level.

isn't that what the chantry is doing?

Sunnie did make a version of it that scales with you. That is truly cheating cause by the end it's got a ton of armor. Just saying.

Aveline has no problems having Aveline break the law.  She demonstates that very clearly throughout the game.

Examples, please?

The Magistrate's son for starters.  She approves of you taking the law into your own hands and killing him.

There are other similiar examples such as her hypocrisy regarding Ser Emric.

-Polaris

There is no hypocrisy. She makes it very clear that in Act 1, temporary recruits are often hired by the City Guard because of limitations with the current guard. They are needed. Hawke is a temporary recruit

or about 50-85, considering the death toll Hawke racks up.

And is this a PC mod? If so.... damn.... that's an epic mage armor.

That's the Robes of the Notorious Pirate from the bandits on the Wounded Coast, act 2.

No, it's unmodded. The main armour is looted from the pirate group you encounter on the Coast and the gloves have possibly wrongly assigned appearance because that's technically Darkspawn armour, but it's either loot or vendor piece... part of one of sets.

edit: having checked, it's Gloves of the Void.

I think we all know how the qunari invasion started, the killing of Saemus, the loss of the tome to Isabela and most importantly, Aveline's insistence for the Arishok to give back the two elves.

Initially I thought that Aveline's insistence on the return of the fugitives was the final straw that triggered the qunari assault, however it seems that this was actually something that the Arishok had been planning for some time.

The qunari you first encounter in Hightown expressed surprise that the Arishok did not capture you, which seems to suggest that they were not in in compound at the time but were aware of what was supposed to happen (and already had orders to assault the city). This seems to support Aveline's comment that they must have been planning this for months.

The Arishok's words and actions in the compound also suggest that he had already decided on this long before Aveline walked through the gate. Therefore the legality or otherwise of Aveline's action was actually irrelevant to what happened.

Heh. I just thought they were Really Big Guys that no one quite knows how to move. And I thought Aveline was just doing what my Hawke wanted - trying to keep things from blowing up. (literally, I guess, in the end.)

You want to know the real reason the Arishok started to attack the city? The abundant crime?

Was it the hatred towards the Qunari?

You don't know too many things to go around stating you have proof...

Was there even a treaty? If so does the Qunari idea of treaty equate to our idea, or the Viscount's idea? There's two "Ifs" aready.

Your argument could work if Thedas law actually worked in the same way as our international criminal law, which we don't know (and probably never will because the writers have better things to do than write comprehensive fantasy legal texts).

hoorayforicecream wrote...

All these discussions have made me curious whether there are actually any lawyers in Thedas.

There's a city magistrate! You know, the one who you are told will make things difficult for you if you disobey his order yet does absolutely nothing.

L O L.

If Aveline has shown us anything about herself, it's that she has a steadfast commitment to the law. Her actions in the Qunari compound reflect that.

I think it's generally a mistake to compare the game world with the real world. Not only can there be circumstances like the Qunari where you have a society that doesn't really exist or have a counterpart in the real world, but you have game devs who can change any aspect of it anytime they wish to suit some new content they are developing (though I imagine part of David Gaider's job is to prevent that, but it's sometimes unavoidable, as I've learned from years of Warcraft lore issues.)

Whatever happens with the Qunari though, I really hope we get to see some females in the next game/content/DLC (the concept art was amazing!), and just more of them in general. I also prefer to compare them to Klingon's, rather than "militant Islamic Borg" ;D.

Anyone who wants to go flex there authority muscles with the Qunari ( when they know tensions between Qunari and Kirkwall are high ) is an idiot. Aveline is dumb, enough said.

No need to over-explain the situation...even though Aveline and the city of Kirkwall had legal rights to apprehend the elves, sometimes you let the small fish go. Besides Im so surprised trying to apprehend the elves is so important, acts of revenge seem to go on everyday in Kirkwall.

Just so we're clear:

There is no treaty. No-one says there is a treaty, not even the qunari gate guard.

As for the mention of the gift, the Viscount says this:

Balance has held because the Qunari ask for nothing. Even the space in Lowtown was a "gift" to contain them.

The quotes are from the in-game text. Whether someone wants to interpret that as meaning more than it is, it's irrelevant. Under no circumstances is the qunari compound foreign soil. It's an awkward and tense situation, and the Viscount recognizes that. When Aveline goes to speak with the Arishok, it's to speak... if you'll recall, she leaves her guards outside. She makes no a demand, but no threat. The Arishok, meanwhile, knows that the city is going to repond to the situation and has already been preparing.

So make of that what you will, but trying to read some kind of legality into the qunari's occupation of the docks area that is neither stated nor really even implied is reaching.

Good to know that there is no treaty. However I'm not certain if the Qunari guard did mention a treaty or not, but either way your word overrules it I guess. But you forgot that Aveline took a small contingent of her guards with her. Seems to me having spears of death impaled in your body when the Arishok says Vinek Kathas (a war declaration basically. But what's it actually translate to?) is something importantPosted Image.

But Aveline did go in just to speak, as you said. She never tried to forcefully take anyone. She merely tried to reason with the Arishok into handing over the elves who basically claimed Sanctuary (not saying it worked, but that was what the elves were aiming for. And the Qunari, being all Qunari-ish, helped them) Basic diplomatic stuff.

You know, if people didn't settle most of their problems in Kirkwall by making each other dead, a good law firm would probably make a killing. Just sayin'...

I still feel that the corrupted red lyrium influenced everything from Act 2 onward, you discovered it in the bone pit area twice and it's obvious from the incident with the mansion that it's contagious even on the lowest level.

You see the Arishok loses his calm at the beginning of the chapter, something which I think at least is not atypical for him to the point where you can sense he's slowly becoming angry at the insanity that is Kirkwall.

All it took was the rediscovery of the artifact and the loss of it to make the Arishok act, even if the other incidents hadn't occured they mentioned that he already had his men in place specifically to take over the city.

From my perspective, Aveline was making the best choice she could - she could have led the City Guard on a march on the qunari compound and demand that they hand over the elves or they storm the gate. Instead, she brings Hawke, who is about the only voice in Kirkwall that the Arishok will give an ear to and respectfully asks for the elves to be returned. There are also the points that Hawke brings up - the precedent it sets, that criminals can escape to the qunari and be free of any crime they committed. What she is trying to do is prevent these criminals from undermining the laws that she is attempting to enforce. She is trying diplomatic channels, asking that the qunari not protect criminals who may only have converted to escape punishment, and not out of honest belief in the qun. It's just that the Arishok decides halfway through the conversation that he's going to force qunari order on Kirkwall at swordpoint.
