I really liked the improvements of the ME2 combat system over the first game, but what annoyed me to no end is having to look up for ammo for my weapons. I don´t like shooters too much, and one of the reasons is that they all use ammo. When i played ME1 i was delighted to see the weapon heat system and how it worked, it stopped you from shooting non-stop but at the same time avoid the mindless grind for ammo. You could waste a shot here an there without worry, say shooting at a crystal or the water to see the effect. With ammo you can´t waste any shoot doing these things.

My suggestion for ME3 is to remove ammo completely for the game, and bring the old heat system back. Instead of ammo there would be certain mods like in ME1 that allowed you to fire longer. The recharge button "R", would now consist on a heatsink but not like those on ME2. When you press R your weapon automatically cool down, instead of you having to wait to cool off like in ME1, and shepard does the reload animation as the heat sink goes off. I believe this is the best of both systems. Powerful weapons would have very high heat increase after each shoot, and heavy weapons may be the exception, having a limited number of charges per mission. Say a grenade launcher has 10 shots, that replenish after each mission, so you don´t have to go around looking for ammo as well.

I wonder what other people thought about the ammo system, i think it was agaisnt the lore of the game and was also a liabilty that added nothing to the game, but instead made it more similar to all the other shooters out there. I know there are older threads about this topic but given that ME3 is not too far away i think it is a good time to bring up this topic to see what people think about it.

The problem with the old system was that it could be cheesed so that you could just use the right mods and fire forever. The only change I would make would make would a "fail safe" for if you did run out of ammo. Basically the gun would be able to only fire a few shots before entering a cool off phase, like in 1. This would continue to make controlling your fire important, without frustrating those of us who miss a lot.

Anyway, thermal clips is one of the best things that was changed from ME1 to ME2( Adept aswell) because:

A) Soldier class is no longer tedious and boring
B) Adds a challenge since you no longer go spry an' pray without punishment
C) Pistol is no longer overpowered( in ME1 you could shot pistol forever when you reach last level and does HUGE damage)

Thermal Clips would have worked if the had been introduced better, right now there is just too much wrong with it.

Or at the very least make each enemy you kill replenish thermal clips instead of dropping near-invisible thermal clips in hard to or impossible to reach places...I mean it worked for items in ME1 to somehow automatically show up in your inventory, why not thermal clips?

^Cause it made no sense to get everything automatically and very artificial?

They're not gonna do it OP. It's been a done deal since they made the decision way back during ME2's development.

Were shall i start, i shall just give one example.

Thermal Clips are universial, but once i'm out of Clips for my Assault Rifle, why can't i use the ones from my Pistol, or why do i even have them when i'm out?

Nah how much I would love for thermal clips , and ammo system to go .
Sadly It shouldn´t , since it really forced me to use more then 1 weapon on my soldier .
While in ME1 all I did was just use assault rifles to kill everything .

Because then I would only use Widow entire ME2 playthrough do to sheer gameplay mechanic unbalance then.

After I hit lvl 60, I kept using Pistol.

It never overheated.

So they retconed lore continunity for gameplay balance? that sounds familiar.

Because if they did that you would have had one ammo pool across all weapons, and when you ran out of ammo for one you would have been out of ammo for all of them.

There is something called continuity the Codex say that clips are universial, but in gameplay does very different., Retcon.

Thats not a retcon >_>

It's just a difference for the sack of preserving game play. Every single game mechanic should not be taken as pure lore.

But the likely reason that you cannot share between weapons as you propose is that the heat sinks are stored inside of the weapons. So the Mantis has 10 shots before needing a Thermal Clip to completely reload, and the Predator has 60 shots.

Thermal Clips are universal because you can use any Thermal Clip on any weapon.

Compared to contemporary weapons, you can't use ammunition universally, like trying to use 5mm rounds in a gun designed to use 5.56mm, it just won't work as intended.

It's things like this that make me feel like the only person who doesn't even bat an eyelash at the ammo clips. It's nots an immersion breaking addition, not a ground shattering revelation in the story, it's just a tweak. *shrug*

ME1:

Shepard - "Bwahahah! Never ending cliiiiiipz! *click-click-click* WTF!"
Merc - "Overheating dipsh*t! *kills*"

ME2:

Shepard - "Bwaahha! *kills mercs - notices clip - takes cover and reloads - goes back to killing safely* BWAHAHAHAAHAH!"
Merc - "OH GOD WHY!?"

No only, one thermal clips is in each weapon, each time a weapon overheat, it will eject and a new one will be inserted.

Retcon?  Really?  You don't seem to know what the word actually means.  It's not some generic pejorative and it doesn't mean "contradiction between gameplay and lore".

Well, then it's just a plain retared idea, they will tell you one thing but end up doing another, not very good writing.

Well, Thermal Clips are not described in detail and if you look at the Shotgun and SMG extra rounds upgrade the description mentions smaller heat sinks being used by the weapons: http://masseffect.wi...search#Shotguns

What another one ,

Here,

The only explantion behind termal clips is from the codex, that states that Thermal clipps were introduced for higher rates of fire, first of all the only weapons that would need a high DPS are the SMG, and the Assault rifle, for all Sniper rifle, they can just wait for the weapon to cool down instead of searching the battlefield for a clip since the can't use the one from their pistol.

This. <_<

If they change it back now it'll annoy me. Not because "OMGTEHLOREZ!" but because the ME2 mechanic is smoother and easier for the player.
