If you let Avernus continue with his research does he ever crop back up in Awakenings/DAII? Or is it just somehting in the post campaign story "thing"? I mean killing him gets you some nice robes for a blood mage, but sparing him doesn't seem to give you anything else. I haven't played Awakening or DA2 yet so if he pops up in them just let me know, if you wanna ruin it I wont loose sleep over knowing what he does (if anything )

If he is still alive then in DA2:

He is referenced in act 1 in a warden letter as he continues his work.

He doesn't appear in DA: Awakening, but in Dragon Age 2 there is a mention of him. Its nothing major, just a letter. If I were you though, I'd go with Avernus just for the story. His method of prolonging the life of Grey Wardens would probably be the canon if the Warden returns a decade or two in the future.

You'll get an attribute bonus potion from him in DA2.
