Hm why did I save Ashley over Kaiden ..... all I can think to say is :-

I like big butts and I can not lie

You other brothers can't deny

That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist

And a round thing in your face

etc etc  :P

Seriously though I just couldn't stand Kaiden, I mean sure Ashley isn't exactly personality of the year but my god Kaiden took it to new levels of urghhhhh.

Hell-to-the-YES! Though, I disagree with your assessment on Kaidan's personality. I liked him myself, but... c'mon, Ash is just... HAWT.

It seems to me the majority hates
Kaidan rather than Ashley, I wouldn't consider her getting complaints
would be regarded as the majority enough to be the victim of most hate.

Didn't say there weren't those who preferred her to her Kaiden. But I do hear a
lot of unfounded hate saying she's a supremist, in your face, zealot.

...Am, I the only one who finds it ironic that Me1 had sensible realistic attire, and ended with a tasteful sex scene;
While Me2 has shirtless women running into firefights, and the most risque ending has dry humping and prize~ jokes?

I chose Kaiden my first time through because he was the superior rank.

Ash brings a hell of a lot more flavor as a character though. It's a good thing I have many playthroughs.

Actually, you aren't the only one. I agree, man. Just saying, with her body, she'd look great like that... *drools*
Speaking of romancing, did anyone wonder: "OMG, what if Ash has babehs?!" before ME2 was announced? I swear, the thought of "My Shepard might be a daddy!" was a nice one.

Well, let's see

Ashley is a sexy, sassy, strongly opinionated, stubbornly honorable and hopelessly romantic killing machine with a penchant for wicked one-liners and the irreverent courage to indulge shamelessly in the most blatant and self-aware of cheesiness whenever she feels like it. Romance-wise, she teases Shep mercilessly (which is refreshing, given the way Shep is often treated by the gameworld) while managing to keep her sensitive and vulnerable side wrapped up well enough that it is intriguing but not debilitating. She doesn't NEED a Shepard in her life, she just wants him in it. This again is refreshing. She also makes a great sisbro for female Sheps or non-Ashleymancing maleSheps.

Kaidan is a handsome, wryly competent, thoughtful, serene (though not so much as to be insufferable, as Wrex is able to take the starch out of him easily and comically enough in their banter) and generally all-around impressive sort of guy who (somewhat like Ash, though their specific methods and proclivities differ) retains a hopelessly romantic streak despite the best efforts of a cynical galaxy to disabuse him of it, and is amusingly embarrassed when he is obliged to talk about it. He also retains enough of a hard edge beneath his warm and cuddly exterior to make it clear that he is not someone to be messed with lightly. Great subordinate, confidant and, for FemSheps, potential lover.

Lots to like all around.

I suppose my Main Shep (I have Shepards who saved each) saved Ashley because:

-Chivalry!
-Her defiant dialog with Shep and Kaidan while the decision was being made sort of touched poignantly on the earlier conversation wherein Shep asked her whether she was going to throw herself on a sword in a misguided attempt to salvage the familial honor, and he wasn't about to let that happen.
-Kaidan seemed to have his business more or less squared away at that point, while Ashley didn't.
-She has about seventeen formidable sisters who would be rather peeved about it if she died, whereas with Kaidan I'd only heard mention of his dear ol' mum and some cousin or other.
-It felt right at the time.

Painful decision all the same.

I saved Kaidan because:

[Joke] I actually tried to sacrifice him, but the absolute perfectness of his hair caused quantum-dimensional-energy-blast that instantly teleported him to the Normandy. Due to the chaotic laws in during that instant in time, another duplicate Ashley was left in the space where Kaidan used to be on Virmire. Once normal laws came back into play, there were two Identical Ashleys, causing the one farthest from the event to simply cease to exist. So now there was only one Ashley, and she was at the epicenter of a quantum-dimensional-energy-blast. The blast expanded to engulf the nuclear device, causing the bomb to be absorbed into the rift, and the rift to collapse upon itself, creating a blast of approximately 23.4209 times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb[/joke]

In all seriousness, it was one of the more annoying decisions in my play. I liked both characters. So I basically had to fall on what in my eyes was standard Alliance protocol. Save the superior officer. I saved my Lieutenant.

But my Renegade Shep saved Ashley.

Saved Kaiden for several reasons.
The cold hard gameplay reason: I was a soldier, I had more use for Tech/Biotic
Other reason: I liked Kaiden's personality, it fit better with mine, it was more clear, and tolerant, I felt like if I asked him about something I could get an honest clear opinion.

In adition, he as also at the bombsite, I didnt want to end up losing that to the geth so I had to run back and make sure that it would go off

Ashley has alot of personality no doubt, she just didnt ring right with me, but it primarily came down to gameplay choice at that time since having 2 soldiers in ME1 was so pointless

I saved Ash.

Meta-game reason: I found her to be the more interesting of the two characters, and she and femShep had good chemistry (or rather, their voice actors did), which granted the relationship the illusion of more depth. Kaiden was a good solid character, but I didn't enjoy him as much. Additionally, I was always nervous that I'd accidentally initiate a romance when talking to Kaidan.

In-game reason: Sending a well-trained marine with the under-manned and ill-equipped Salarian strike force made more sense than sending a tech-expert, who would be of better use safely arming a jerry-rigged bomb. When it came down to choosing who to save, it came down to choosing between Kaidan and the bomb, or Ash and the majority of the Salarians. I chose to save the most lives possible. Kaiden was my second in command, and knew he risks going in. But that rationale is coloured by the fact that my Shep was much closer to Ash than Kaiden.

It was a hard decision for me on my first playthrough, so much so that I actually had to put the controller down think about it for a while. In the end, I chose Ashley because I felt like she was trying too hard to clear her family's name. Just because her grandfather had become a disgrace to the Alliance doesn't mean that she has jump at every opportunity to prove her worth, much less kill herself. Kaidan, on the other hand, was practical about his decision to stay on Virmire. He understood the importance of detonating the nuke.

I'm a softie when it comes to my crew, if I could have saved both them, then I would have. That also explains why I can never bring myself to kill off any of the ME2 squadmates.

same here
while she is hot, can't stand her negativity toward aliens, especially the fact that she shots Wrex in the back... IN THE BACK! not that I ever let her take a shot at my bro in any of my playthroughs =)

Glad I'm not the only one. My first ME2 playthrough with my original imported main (see my description a few pages ago), I saved everyone except Jack, who I mistakenly sent to escort the Normandy crew back to the ship. I fixed that in my next run, and I never even think about letting any of my crew die now-- they're all such good characters, and I literally imagine my main Shep treating them like one big, (not-so) happy, dysfunctional family. Besides, having... what, ten others standing tall with you in the face of a Reaper invasion (since I don't have XBL and can't get the DLC for Zaeed and Kasumi) is just EPIC.

I liked them both, but when it came to the point I had to choose, I chose Ashley because she was with the STG. My main Shep tries to save as many lives as possible.

I saved Ash mainly because she was more interesting. Kaidan is just the same old boring guy you get at the beginning of every Bioware game.

On my first playthrough I actually decided it was better to go back and make sure the bomb was going to go off and happened to save Ashley in the process, it just seemed more important to the mission than going to that AA tower.

The second time I sent Ashley up to the AA tower and saved her there because frankly, Kaiden is just a bore ^^

Sometimes I feel like the only person who doesn't hate one of them.  I'll admit Ashley survived in all but one playthrough because I always send Ash with the Salarians and I always rescue the salarians.  While I love having to make the choice Shep would've suffered through anything to save them both.

i saved kaidan being male shepard. Even when kaidan was a bit boring he saved my ass many times with his decryption/tech habilities and also reparing the mako.(Actually tali was my main tech companion, but i found kaidan more usefull with tech+biotics than ash only being a tank.)

Actually tech was a big factor in ME1, while in the second was expendable.
