In my canon playthrough, I chose Ashley and I romanced her, but that wasn't the reason I saved her.
I saved her over Kaiden not for the fact that I disliked Kadien; He was my right hand man, but I felt Kadien knew the risks going with the Salarian. I had to go back to the Bomb and saving Ash made the most sense.
Seeing Ashley change in the story from an Alien hating Soldier to telling off Terra Firma and demanding that Humanity make the sacrifice to save the Council...That confirmed to me that it was the right choice to make.
Thankfully with my FemShep Canon playthrough, I saved Kadien.
Why did you choose Ashley/Kaidan?

Ashley annoyed me so I let her go, but regretted it later after meeting Kaiden on Horizon and watching him throw reason out the window in favor of being an ass. From now on he'll be the one biting the dust.
In the meantime will try to understand Ashley better.

i saved kaidan being male shepard. Even when kaidan was a bit boring he saved my ass many times with his decryption/tech habilities and also reparing the mako.(Actually tali was my main tech companion, but i found kaidan more usefull with tech+biotics than ash only being a tank.)
Actually tech was a big factor in ME1, while in the second was expendable

Never liked Kaidan very much. So my decision was easy. I picked Ashley, even though I didn't romance her.

Ashley is a woman, my shepard is a man

My Canon Paragade Femshep chose Kaiden. He was her LI and suspected Ashley was scheming to take him from her, so naturally she had to be taken out ASAP.

My female shep saved Kaiden. My male shep saved Ashley. Both for romance reasons. My male shep romancing Liara saved Ashley as well since he was a biotic and a soldier class was more useful and meant less redundancy
Hey, he's pragmatic.

Paragon ManShep romanced, saved Ashley. Renegade FemShep romanced, saved Kaidan (and then "cheated" on him in ME2).

The first time I played I chose Ashley, but I genuinely liked both characters. I remember having to take a break from the game for a couple hours. Thinking back now it's hard to remember why, but the choice came out of nowhere, and choosing such a catch-22 made me feel like a piece of crap commander. I still legitimately think that it's the hardest decision I've had to make in a game, as too many other game--even those made by BioWare--offer you easier ways out, obvious motivations for your choice--like a good/evil system--or give the choice little significance.

Most of my choices in this matter were made with metagaming.
Aaron Shepard: Romanced Ashley, naturally saved her. (First Shep ever. Canon playthrough.)
Vance Shepard: Killed Ashley, saved Kaidan. For metagaming reasons though, as he's my available Shep who has three different saves for each ME2 romance.
Samuel Shepard: Romanced Liara, killed off Ashley. A just in case scenario, so Ashley couldn't possibly appear just before Ilos. Also, bros with Kaidan.
Tom Shepard: Single. Will kill off Ashley, though. See Sam's reasoning.
Cecilia Shepard: Faithful to Kaidan, saved him.
Sapphira Shepard: Faithful to Liara, killed Kaidan. Just in case.
Sarah Shepard: Available FemShep for Garrus and Thane. Killed Kaidan, just in case.

I initially had these:
Jane Shepard saved and romanced Kaidan
John Shepard saved and romanced Ash
Raina Shepard saved her bestie Ash
But I really only play with John. He's my canon and therefore Ash is always around. I do like Kaidan though. The Virmire choice was always a tough one for me. It was done really well as I really liked both of the characters.

I chose Ashley because:
1. She is a soldier, way to many Biotic freaks and techno wizards
2. She is a she
3. To many males on the team.

Saved Ash in my "canon" run because she was ma Shep's girl!
If I ever save her without romancing her, it's because she has a large family that my Shepard doesn't want to cause grief to and she is a soldier with a lot to offer and a lot to learn, whereas Kaidan seems as though he's reached his peak.

It seems to me the majority hates
Kaidan rather than Ashley, I wouldn't consider her getting complaints
would be regarded as the majority enough to be the victim of most hate.
lot of unfounded hate saying she's a supremist, in your face, zealot.
It's not any different from people saying Kaidan is dumb, or boring. In the end, the things they use to describe each character from both sides is similar in explanations, everyone's justifaction is the same basically. The amount who prefers one over the other however, isn't. Ashley is no victim of majority dislike anyway. I would compare this to Morinth and Samara. There is ALWAYS majority preference.

I chose Ash first because
1 - she looked cute in the helmet
2 - she enjoys literature
3 - she's in military
besides the issues I have with the religion and the xenophobe...
In subsequent playthroughs I got to know Liara better and later Miranda...
And I don't find her character that interesting...but she did make a very good first impression though...
Kaidan is boring, my god, never had the will to save him...
In general, ME2 human squadmates are miles away in character depth than the first ones...

The choice was way easy for me. Ashley had to live. I would never let potential tail die.
....and thats with my male Shepard AND my (favorite) female Shepard.

Saved Ash because we instantly connected just like that on Eden Prime. She is my canon Shep's love interest and the closet thing to him that he has. Kaidan and my Shep were also pretty tight, so it was a hard hitting moment on Virmire when I had to let one go.
I felt like it was the right time for Kaidan to go. He was already vastly experienced and more mature. Infact he was probably the most experienced out of all the team including Shep, so with that it was simply his time. Plus as a L/I Ash helps develope my canon Sheps story more in the long run. Not to mention she had alot more room for growing as does my Shep.
In a way its kind of like Qui Gon Jin dying in TPM, it was just simply his time and not Obi Wan's yet.

First time, I chose Kaidan because I thought that there was still a way to save Ashley if I saved Kaidan fast enough. Second time I chose Ashley to differentiate from the Kaidan save. Every time after that, I saved Ashley for boobs.
