Honestly, if it comes down to it, Kaidan is the more valuable Alliance asset. Ashley's skill set, while impressive, is not particularly uncommon. Kaidan is a biotic, and is indeed among the first generation of human biotics. His experience as a biotic, and his training as an officer, makes him the clear choice of whom to save. Considerations of whose personality is more appealing shouldn't enter into the equation, since the choice of whom to save should be a dispassionate, strategic decision. That said, saving Ashley isn't necessarily a bad idea from a story standpoint, but Kaidan's value to the Alliance is undeniably greater than Ash's.

Intellectually, this is what my primary Shepard told herself as to why she chose Kaidan over Ash.  This was her official answer.
However, if she is really honest with herself, she saved him because she loved him.  As much as Ash was like a sister to her and as difficult as the decision was on her, she had to chose him.

Of all the male LI's in the series, Kaidan is the only one that asks nothing of Shepard during the romance.  He has depth.  He tells her of his history, not for her her fix him, but to help her.  kaidan supports her regardless of the decisions that she makes.  He doesn't make her go through loyalty misssions to gain his love and trust.  That's why the character has my trust and loyalty.  Horizon was devastating.  But I have faith that Kaidan will see through the Cerberus lies and come back to femShep to be her partner in defeating the reapers.

One of my Shepards feels the same way, though she is logical to a fault and would have come to the same conclusion. Of the other two females, one chose Kaidan because she hates Ashley (because Shepard's first name is also Ashley, and she finds herself "competing" with Ashley) and the other chose Kaidan because she felt a biotic kinship with him (even though she romanced Liara, with whom she had even more of a biotic connection). All three of my male Shepards chose Kaidan for dispassionate reasons, though one secretly had a crush on him. They all obviously romanced Liara, poor Ash just couldn't compete in those days with Hot Blue Alien Chick. If only Ethan Shepard could have seen how Ashley would look in ME3, he might have flipped on Liara for her, and sacrificed his right hand man Kaidan.

Actually, I'm kind of bummed that I don't have any Ash-surviving playthroughs with my six main Shepards. It would have made the most sense for Ethan, my Renegade Infiltrator, to save/romance Ashley, but I was all about Liara and Kaidan back in the ME1 days.

i can't even remember if I actually responded to the thread. wait, yeah I said I try to keep it equal and I choose Ash for her turns because I hate that she'd be seen as a martyr because of her Family's blacklisting, I liek that the higher ups (Hackett and Anderson) see what my Sheps do when they save her and that she can be above what got her amily blacklisted for and is a damn fine soldier and apparenlty a good leader from her file.

I didn't like playing ME1 as a male shep.  So I only have one that romanced Liara (and saved Kaidan because he's the greater asset).  But I have one Shep that I did in ME2 without a ME1.  So Ash is alive in that.  However, I really would like to have a Ashely-romanced Shepard.  So I likely will get ME2 for PS3 at some point so that I can have that without having to actively kill Kaidan or go through ME1 as a male shep again.

I saved Kaidan when I romanced him with Evelyn Shepard, but felt really bad about killing Ashley. I have a sister so when she was talking about hers I was thinking what it would be like if I lost mine. I definately feel bad about killing Ashley no matter what. In ME2, Evelyn romanced Garrus. When I found out there will be consequences for choosing another LI (I'm not saying cheating. I don't consider it cheating at all. If death and ressurrection isn't a fresh start, I don't know what is) I made Olivia to specifically skip a romance in ME 1 and go with just Garrus to see the difference. With Olivia I chose to kill Kaidan and save Ashley.

I have played through ME1 and ME2 4 times.

Paragon Soldier = Saved Ashley
Paragon Infiltrator = Saved Ashley
Paragon Vanguard = Saved Ashley
Renegade Adept = Saved Ashley

conclusion: I cant stand Kaidan. I think he is one of the most boring characters i have ever encountered in any game i have played.

Lets see 7-9 playthroughs
7-9 times Kaiden dies
Yup I chose Ashley.

Why would I want Kaiden when you get Jack a HUMAN prodigy biotic?
"Nah Kaiden we are going with Jack since shes alot stronger sorry bud."
Jack stole all of Kaidens uniqueness.

I find it funny though that almost 9 pages of Ash being called a racist by people to ignorant to continue and develop her backstory.
Ash has been groundside for almost her entire military career because of her last name which in turn means she almost has NO alien contact at all. Her past justifies her feelings towards aliens due to never interacting  with one in the first place.

I doubt if aliens landed tomorrow that everyone will be all "Oh we love aliens! They are the best." Oh wait thats a whole different story. Hypocrites.

I killed Ash, because I was romancing Liara. I was nice to Ashley, but I could never bare that conversation where you had to pick between the two. Kill Ashley appeared to be an easy way out :D.

I saved Kaidan because: He was the tech guy, so he was the obvious choice for preping the bomb. Then when you have to choose, my Shep told himself that the bomb had to be protected at all costs, so he went for Kaidan. Also the fact that he's a biotic and an officer helped. And that Ashley was a xenophobic republican.
