What were the Qunari living off of in Kirkwall?

My understanding is that they refuse to sell their services as fighters, because that would be against the Qun.  The Qunari in Kirkwall being a group of soldiers, I don't know what other skills they could have had as a trade, but I would think that they'd refuse to sell those skills to bas as well, because it would be too mercenary.

They obviously refused to sell their goods, such as the explosive powder, to the likes of Javaris.

So what were they living off of for four years in Kirkwall?  And it seems there were a lot of them.  Do they not eat?  Are they the kind to take charity?  Did they bring enough food with them (seems highly unlikely but possible I suppose)?

They were apparently capturing mages. Maybe they know how to conjure food.

They were living off the goodwill of Kirkwall.

I'm sure they also found their own food from the areas surrounding Kirkwall, and possibly earned themselves money for trade by killing and looting Tal'Vashoth.

They're on the docks. They could be fishing!

And btw, I'd like to see that.  A bunch of grumpy qunari reluctantly casting lines, grumbling, then having a nice Fish Fry.

Imagine roving bands of Qunari being sent out in the night, stealing all the cookies.
No wonder Petrice was so upset.

Oh, and, this is off-topic but, since they had that gaatlok stuff, why not just use the poison gas throughout the entire city, since the Qunari themselves are immune to it? Seems to me like that would save them a lot of trouble if all they wanted was to "cleanse" the city. Or is that not honorable enough?

Isn't mage and turnip stew a qunari delicacy?

It is an interesting point, because unless they were trading something - which it certainly looked as though they would refuse to do on principle - they were either living purely off the charity of the humans, or they were actively stealing (even if they were going out and hunting/fishing, they're still stealing from the people who own that land) from Kirkwall. The only other option is if their ship had 4 years of supplies on board and they managed to salvage all that, which seems incredibly, incredibly far-fetched.

One meal a month could really stretch out things.

If they're sitting on their ass doing nothing like Sten was then maybe, but if they want to remain battle ready they probably need a lot more energy.

And cake.

Cake is not a demand of the Qun, but COOKIES are.

They have been ever since Sten returned to share their glory with Qun.

I still love sten at the end. "Where is the cake? I was told there would be cake! The cake is a lie."

I don't know how but they purchased the raw ingredients and baked them. It's a little known fact (read: a lie) that Qunari soldiers are also trained in the baking of tasty treats for "snack time". It's an extreme soldiery form of baking martial art, so it satisfies a demand of the Qun.

In all honesty I'm guessing they probably bought their food from farmers, fishermen, vendors, taverns... Even though there aren't any vendors that we can see there must have been some somewhere.
