Which class makes the most sense for Shepard?

The question is pretty self-explanatory. Out of all the classes available to Shepard, which one really makes the most sense do you think considering his background, job, and over-all mission approach?

In my case, I'm going to go with the Infiltrator by a long shot. Infiltrators are trained and equipped to operate in small teams but also independently when the situation requires it. They are supposed to be capable of being self-sufficient. Infilrators can hack through enemy defenses and security, neutralize targets quietly be it up close or from afar, and can heal themselves or others.

In ME2 we see Shepard doing all of these things, regardless of class, but in ME1 he needed to be an infiltrator or sentinel to do this.

Now the problem with sentinel as with other biotic classes is that we never see Shepard use any biotics in the story. His biotic abilities are mentioned once or twice in dialog, but that's it. We never really see him use tech, but then we don't really see anyone use tech.

On the ground we always see Shepard operating with a small squad or by himself in Arrival. This is exactly what an infiltrator is trained for. Arrival especially stands out because it is an infiltration mission where Shepard is expected to be operating alone and bypassing security. Really it makes little sense for any of the non-tech or non-stealth classes to be given this assignment.

Now clearly in a lot of cutscenes Shepard wields an assault rifle and is seen in heavy armor. There are also a couple of missions that are straight up fights/assaults with no actual stealth or hacking expertise being the focus.

However for the most part the infiltrator makes the most sense in my eyes. Spectres are expected to operate alone or in small groups, just like infiltrators.

I may be wrong, but isn't soldier the default class for Shepard in ME1?

I always think of canon shep as being soldier or vanguard.

But my last several playthroughs have been Engineers, (Combat Drone and AI Hacking ftw... Especially with Dominate as advanced training. :D) so I'm starting to think of Engineer as being the default class, for me at least

Edit: But! I also am completely in love with the Adept. No idea what class I'll go with in Mass 3 the first time.

Personally I don't think Adept*, Sentinel or Engineer make much sense; they can be extremely deadly, and are invaluable to many missions but they are specialists and I think they'd fail the Spectre self-reliance criterion. In addition, I think that Soldier is a bit unlikely given that they'd probably pick someone with special skills (other than the ability to carry loads of guns) for Spectre evaluation. Thus it's a tie between Vanguard and Infiltrator.

* Based on the books, (regular human) biotics can potentially lift tanks (useful) but need to take a nap before they're able to use their powers again.

I believe only the soldier would fit as the "canon" class. It has the widest tactical options and should be the only class trained in group dynamics. I prefer to play an infiltrator but objectively it's a specialist class that should have no business leading other specialists, I can imagine the vanguard as the second choice betrayed only by it's limited tactical derived by his weapon training.

I was going to say Infiltrator and list a series of reasons. However, Saphra did that in the OP for me. Bravo, good sir.

Depends. Where is your Shepard from?
The in your face streets of Earth? Definitely Soldier or Vanguard.
A homestead on the backwater colony, Mindoir? An Engineer or Adept.
Cruising in an Alliance Ship or 5? Sentinel or Infiltrator.

I prefer the vanguard or adept.... leaning slightly towards vanguard... soldier skills + biotics....can kill you with bullets or the mind!

Obviously the true answer to the OPs question is all of them, but if we really really had to nitpick, we'd have to go with Soldier, just based on this ground - since there really isn't anything that would really make one class more legit than any other.

I'd probably go for Soldier if I had to pick. Followed by Vanguard and then Infiltrator, but definitely Soldier first. Less of a specialist. The default is also Soldier, but that might be for gameplay reasons as much as anything, since they are easy to play. Obviously, ultimately, any of them is the 'true' one.

Firt playthrough ever for both games was Vanguard and the same will be true for ME3 when it comes out. As far as I'm concerned, Vanguard is default.

Yeah, def. Soldier because...well he's an Alliance soldier.

Though Vanguard makes sense too since it's a hybrid of Solider and Adept (a Biotic Soldier?) Plus, it makes Shepard an even bigger badass.

Any of them make perfect sense, IMO. Specters are drawn from all sorts of backgrounds, not just military, though that is the primary source.
Shepard is exceptionally skilled at whatever basic class you choose.
Specters need Soldiers that can handle themselves in a fire-fight.
They need Engineers that can bypass and overload systems.
They need powerful biotic Adepts.
They need specialized close-quarter Vanguards.
They need Sniper-savvy infiltrators.
They need versatile Sentinels.
There isn't one class that stands out to me as being more or less likely to really be Shepard.

Colonist - Soldier, Infiltrator (I think biotics are a hard sell here just because it doesn't seem like Colonist Shepard would actually be exposed to eezo in the womb unless he/she had an older sibling and they'd been in the colonies for a while.)

Earthborn - Soldier, Engineer, Infiltrator (Biotics would be great here, but would definitely make Shepard out to be amazing before joining the Alliance military. Being ordinary, but skilled comes across much better to me.)

Spacer - Adept, Vanguard, Infiltrator, Sentinel, Engineer, Soldier (Any one can occur here. Milatary transports of eezo can lead to Shepard being exposed in the womb. Growing up as a military brat creates the best possibility for Shepard to pick up and hone technical skills to become an engineer.)

Narratively, If you're playing Shep as humanity's poster child, I really feel like Vanguard is the way to go. Decent biotics and impressive firepower - pretty much exactly what you'd see in our "features list" as a race. Humanity - a hot chick with telekinesis and a shotgun. Now available in Spectre!

If you're playing pure, hardcore Renegade, I think Soldier or Infiltrator is the most plot appropriate. They just seem like they would have had the kind of past that would lead to that particular attitude and worldview.

That said, any class makes sense, and I like the flavor they add to the story. My Engineer Shepard has a very "Oh my god, again? You guys are really inefficient about all of this 'saving the universe' stuff, you know?" attitude, like a beleaguered IT guy. There are interesting ways to look at all of them.

they make a big deal about Biotics so I tend to think of shep as a powerful biotic, so Vanguard sounds about right.

Shock Trooper, which is a specialization for both Soldiers and Vanguards, seems like the best fit. Incidentally my Paragon mShep is a Vanguard-Shock Trooper, and my Renegade fShep is a Soldier-Shock Trooper.

My favourite class is probably Sentinel closely followed by Adept however despite this I still choose to have my canon Shepard as a Soldier simply because it seems best story wise.

Also doesn't the timeline for an Earthborn Shep and a Colonist Shep not match up if he's a biotic?

The default soldier. Can't picture Shep in any other capacity.

I'd have to agree it's Soldier, if merely because the majority of people seemed to have picked it.
