  Let's face it Varric's Specilization tree is better  than Sebastion's.



  Why use Varric when you can use Merrill?  She's cuter.

Varric does more damage and all in all is much better since bianca doesn't demand high dexterity.

Sabastian is much better at surviving, and wounding arrow allows the highest spike damage when along with other damage resistance debilitators.

I am using Sebastien this playthough just to see experience his personality in group. I do like the fact that he berates Anders at times.

Sebastian is so passive and nice that he gets along with everyone. He will drive you nuts if you hate religious people though.

Varric's good, but Sebastian can use the Jackal's Longbow. Weapons ignoring armor are extremely potent You bring either of them over Merrill because not bringing a rogue means you miss out on the thousands of experience points you get for picking locks and disarming traps throughout the game.

Sebastian might say that you need to fast from Varric periodically as an ascetic exercise to bring yourself closer to the Maker.

Sebastian has two things going for him when compared with Varric: greater survivability and the ability to equip Absolution. (I think it's better than the Jackal's Longbow, personally, since Nature resistance is so rare.) Mind you, I still bring Varric with me a lot more often since his DPS is better, but Sebastian is far from useless.

Also, he has a hot Scottish accent. But then, Varric doesn't wear a shirt, so I guess they're about even on that score.

I sometimes bring Sebastian beacause I like doing things to troll him, like telling his dominatrix Elthina how useless she is without a leather whip in her hand.

My biggest complaint with Sebastian comes from the fact that to take full advantage of Arrow of Judgment and Wounding arrow, you really have to control him manually. There's no way via tactics to make him fire off those abilities only after a long righteous chain... And they don't have the CCC effect that Explosive Strike for Hawke or Isabella. The other issue for me is that with a non-rogue Hawke, he doesn't have the cunning to pick most locks without a respect. So, he usually sits in the Chantry.

I don't know how to properly build up either of them. I don't like archer specs so I leave both of them out of my party. Isabela gets to be my lock picker.

You can ignore most of the Archer tree unless you're looking to building up specific CCC's. Their specialized trees are great (Varric for speed increases and multishot powers, Sebastian has Righteous Chain and Decoy). Both do well as your aggro managers (on the PC Goad and Armistice work fine). As with any Rogue stick to Dex and Cunning for the most part and add Willpower and Con as needed.

Without the Assassin tree, you won't need to get Cunning above 40 unless you want to build up their crits.

I tried that (focusing specifically on their specialized tree), but I still have issues with using them in combat.  Varric specifically always manages to position himself badly and get himself killed really quickly. (I don't like switiching to use him much.  I like my warrior/mages better for classes).  I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but they just die too quickly for me to want them in my party.

The sexay accent. Though Varric's tones are much nicer.. It's a very hard decision no matter what.
