Mages seem to survive alright in DA2 compared to DAO where they didn't get attention because they had lower armor. Or is it the same and I didn't notice?

Varric's more entertaining, Sebastian's too damn preachy for my liking. As someone who's anti-religion he sh*ts me on principle. He also can't pick a lock to save his live, so much for the mis-spent youth.
If you keep Varric's cunning pretty high combined with liberal use of goad & a warrior to draw the agro he does just fine.

I would never replace Varric, even if I was an archer I would use him, I don't care about party balance I care about what the characters are like.

I never bring Sebastion out, he's not cunning enough to pick locks. Sometimes I take him out if I need to sell my junk just to hear his banter. He's a bit boring though, Merrill and Isabela talking about his shiny armour made me laugh though.
