Hawke is a human who doesn't spend time in the Circle (Mage or not), and has a lot of similarities with Cousland.

(1) Aristide (likely Hawke's great grandpa) was a prominent enough noble to be considered for Viscount in Kirkwall. Bryce is one of the two Teyrns in Ferelden.

(2) Both families suffer unfortunate turns of events around the time of the Fifth Blight, with both of the parents of the protagonist (Hawke/Cousland) killed.

(3) Oriana/Bethany/Carver dies as well, while Fergus/Carver/Bethany survives and remains the only living relative in the protagonist's nuclear family.

(4) The protagonist fights through a series of battles against overwhelming odds to redeem their family name and build up their reputation. Cousland by joining the legendary Grey Wardens, Hawke by working as a mercenary/smuggler/explorer/ambassador.

(5) Both eventually succeeded and gained political prominence. Cousland took less than a year to become King/Queen of Ferelden, Hawke too 4~7 years to become Champion/Viscount of Kirkwall.

(6) Even though Hawke's accomplishements are of a smaller scale (Kirkwall < Ferelden), they required less external help, had a lower starting point, and Hawke did not need to ascend to the status of a nation's leader through a (at least partly) political marriage.

(7) Hawke's story is darker due to Kirkwall being an evil place compared to the idyllic Ferelden. It is also less heroic because Hawke is not a Grey Warden. But the personal struggle and Dark Fantasy settings remain the same.

My question is, do you feel they are similar in the same way that I do? And if so, why do you think so many fans of the Cousland origin dislike Hawke's story? Cousland is not even my favorite Origin- I like both City Elf/Magi a bit better. I think Hawke is a blend of several origins: Cousland mostly, a bit of Magi/Dwarf Commoner/City Elf here and there.

Yeah there are similarities and I would bet you could find that in a lot of noble families. Some of the stuff you listed can play out differently depending on how you decide things. Number 3 isn't right you are forgetting about Gamlen and you find out you have a cousin. Cousland only has the brother and we only see him for about 5 minutes the entire game. I could argue that Hawke never really accomplished anything. It was more being in the wrong place at the right time.

The main thing I see that ends any comparrison is once you become a GW you really are no longer a Cousland. There is the Howe moment and a few comments here and there about your past but for the most part you are known as a warden. While Hawke stays Hawke no matter what they do. Sure you get a nice title but it doesn't change who you are. That is how I see it but i am sure many others will disagree with me.

I found there was far more in common with the Cousland and Sebastian Vael storylines.
