Thing that has made me think lately is how did human civilization in ME universe survive the 21st century, the looming end of oil, the climate change and all the conflicts that potentially rose from these?

A future that we ourselves will also face.

Discovered interstellar travel at just the right time, I suppose.

Because that's what humanity does.

We survive.

In reality, we would have suffered the same fate as the Drell race. But then there would not have been much of a story for Humanity to go on.

Maybe we just had some benevolent "revolutions" here and there and thanks to an increased level of intellect and sensibility, employed people in leading positions that actually cared more for what they are supposed to do instead of thinking about the next elections.
This is such a rare case in this world that its undoubtedly farreaching results can't even be estimated correctly, ... which makes me unendingly sad about that very same fact.

But that thing came only at 2140s, analysts say we will run out of oil before 2080, and that is not taking into effect that India and China are growing technologically and want to use it too.

Well I guess somebody finally got hydrogen or solar energy accepted at higher corporations.

Let's see.....

2011: We're running out of oil and other crucial minerals and politicians and CEOs don't give a damn to find alternate powers.

2137: First mining operation in Saturn is established.

In reality, we would have ran out of resources by then and died. It is never implied that humanity found alternate power means.

There are plenty of other forms of energy, it's just not currently economical to use them. Once the price of oil becomes prohibitive there will be more incentive to develop these. As for gloabl warming, well some areas of the planet are going to get dry, some very wet, while some will become more habitable. It's not a threat to human survival.

They better find it, you cant do anything with money if youre dead. If your children are dead. If your whole world is dead. I know how crazy CEos and politicians are, but this is a fact that should have entered their brains at least once and stayed there.

All of that is the crap they feed you so you'd shut up and act like nothing is wrong. The reality is a grim and bleak future for humanity. Did you know that by 2016 the north pole will have no ice and that polar bears will go extinct? Did you know that by 2050 all oil reserves will be depleted? Did you know that thanks to global warming, by the 2100 almost half of Earth will be underwater?

Oh yeah, no immediate threat, non at all.

We have bigger problems than running out of oil (estimated 2050-2080 I believe)... there won't be enough fresh water in the world to sustain the population (estimated 12 billion or so by 2060).

Unless there's a huge leap in desalination technology (cost efficient and effective technology), billions will begin dying from lack of water & food within the next 40-50 years.... that's a problem I'm hoping to live long enough to see solved, just out of sheer curiosity (I'll be lucky to be alive in 40-50 yrs though.. will be a very very old man... at least if the world does go to hell in a hand basket around 2050, I'll either be dead already or so far in my twilight years that I won't care).

I won't even point out the massive food shortages occuring TODAY in the world and the mass hoarding of grain occuring by western nations (though that's motivated by profit & greed... though sadly is causing the deaths of people in 3rd world nations that need it, but can't afford it).

We are breeding faster than this world can support us.. if a solution isn't discovered within many of our (or you younger folk) life times, then the human race is going to endure a massive catastrophe in half a century or so.

Doing my part though... not having any goddamn kids :P (though honestly that's motivated by my dislike at kids & marriage in general.. not because I'm a "good citizen of the world" )

You won't care, but your family will be alive and by that time it is estimated that there will be major food scarcity worldwide. In reality, humans in ME would have suffered the same fate as the Drell.... if they were lucky.

Well Earth Shep literaly grew up on the streets, so it's not unlikely that human civilization was at the very brink of collapse when they discovered the ME Drive.

That is the first time I have heard those numbers.
North Pole icefree in 2016? I seriously doubt it would be that early. Chances are it might never come that far, so much water set free changes the whole planet's climate with fairly unpredictable dimensions, that make the entire process unforeseeable.
Oil out in 2050? 2060-70 is more likely given our growth rates.
And by 2100 half the earth under water? There is no legit data suggesting it might actually come to this. It is a scenario that might occur, but is not set to be inevitable.

And this is why I find it ignorant and  funny when people ask me why I have Nihilistic inclinations. Fine, take it as a joke, hope your one of the billions to be directly affected and have to scrounge food from garbage cans.

If you think running out of oil is a problem then you definitely do not want to read this article :-

http://www.cracked.c...-out-of_p1.html

Thankfully Mass Effect is science fiction so it can ignore inconvenient things like "humanity probably won't survive to see the end of the 21st century".

I can say this much, tough I have a tremendous faith in humans and their ability to survive and fix problems. IF we do absolutely nothing or just let the shortsighted lead us around, future years will resemble Mad Max to our children and their children. Or worse.

We can already grow biofuels, they just aren't currently economical. We have a multitude of other means of generating electricity. Way more than half the earth is underwater already.
