How to improve texture quality?

Overall I thought DA2 had great graphics but the low quality textures really bugged me. I'm able to run the game very well at High (and would be able to run it at Very High if I had a DX11 capable PC) but I'd be willing to take a performance hit to get rid of the awful armour textures. There doesn't appear to be anyway of adjusting this in the .ini file. I'm considering getting the hi-res texture pack but I'm unsure if my GPU (which is an 8800GT with 512mb of video RAM) will be able to cope with it and I don't want to waste my internet cap on it.

Any suggestions on how I could increase the texture quality?

I had a 8800GTS 512mb and I was not able to enable the high-res texture pack. So I bought a new video card :P

Hi rez texture pack

hi rez textures do not use any more or less gpu power than normal. They just cause the game to need more video and system memory. There should be little to no performance hits for the hi rez pack.

The game plays GREAT on my laptop with 2 8800Ms

Internet cap? Where do you live? Canada? I don't think any ISP in the USA is allowed to cap data plans unless they are mobile, but I've heard of Canadian ISP getting away with that

I think the hi res texture pack runs better if you have an SSD.

I'm able to get excellent framerates on my laptop with hi res texture pack, DX11, 1920x1080, very high detail, 16 x AF, 2 x AA, SSAO, high quality blur, even though my laptop card is a second tier card (AMD Mobility 5830), perhaps partly due to my SSD (Dual Intel X18 G2's in Raid0).

Well (amazingly) I was able to enable the hi res texture pack on my aging system and didn't get any hit at all (as predicted, thanks TallBearNC). The pack also improved the armour texture's bringing them up to at least Origin's level. Awesome.

I'm in NZ where we have absolutely awful broadband restrictions (I'm on 20 gigs a month) due to an aging copper phone network. A fibre optic system is being delayed by a lot of red tape. Ahhh, the joys of privatised phone companies.

Thanks for your help.
