I think Bioware dropped the ball when they included blood magic as a spec. Nobody in your group ever acknowledges that you are using it and there is no consequences  for using it either. I would add two layers of consequences for using blood magic. The first one is that everytime you use it there is a 25% chance that demons will be summoned. This will be both benefical and problematic as the demons will attack both your enemies and you and your party. The second consequence will be that everytime you use it, you will earn rivialry points with all but Merril. Use it often and you guarantee max rivialry points.

The demon's don't get summoned accidentally. Either the blood mage summons the shades/spirits, or a demon possesses the blood mage and then summons the shades/spirits. The first isn't a good answer to the problem that you have with blood magic, and the second isn't usable at all, since you've effectively lost Hawke.

will be exploited for unlimited xp
also rivalry bonuses are sometimes better than friendship, and you'll get those for free for toggling and untoggling

I think maybe earning a small amount of rivalry points when you use the sacrifice skills might make sense. That's clearly harming your companions in a way that should upset them.

Yeah, demons aren't summoned accidentally by blood mages.

....now perhaps we should be able to summon demons...

I would be a lot happier if my bloodmage did not constantly yell 'I need Mana!' 'I can't go ON!" when there is still 275 points left in a 280 point health bar.
Also the items that are supposed to add an ADDITIONAL point of mana for every point of health do not work.

And this from two posts up: I think maybe earning a small amount of rivalry points when you use the sacrifice skills might make sense. That's clearly harming your companions in a way that should upset them.
(at the very least an angry aside, " I h8 it when you do that Hawk!")

Final word:
The notion that blood magic can only be tied to demons is NOT LORE!Image IPB

I think if they wanted to be realistic, some of your companions should just abandon you when they find out you're a maleficar, not gain a few rivalry points.

Fenris would only be annoyed like when Hawk keeps the slave, only one I can really see leaving is DLC, but even he tolerates Merril, but that may just be rascism.
The Anders abomination is the real reason to leave if there ever was one. My Templar must have had a brain fart when he found out and let the thing live.

The plot must go on. I find it rather amusing to cast hemmorhage right in front of Cullen.

I'm not sure an RPG would sell well if Hawke/whatever protagonist gets arrested for obviously flaunting the laws of the land in front of the citywatch/templars/soldiers/whoever, so it's something we just have to live with.

This, a thousand times this.

At first "Do you think they're tiring? I'm tiring" was cute, now it's the most horendous sound I've ever heard.

- Most of your teammates should comment on blood magic and gain rivalry for using it. I mean everyone hates merrill and she isn't using sacrifice on anyone.
- Using magic in public should get guards on you, let alone blood magic which should basically 5 star you GTA style
- Blood magic should be massively overpowered to compensate. Seriously it should not be convenient to use blood instead of mana, it should be something that makes your mage a demigod. Conjuration skills, long duration mind control, amplification of damage for other skills immensely.

I would agree.  I would love to teleport too.  It seems every low level mage can but I can't.  Actually I hate the whole teleporting mage<_<, but if other mages can do so should Hawke.:P

are you sure about that? they shouldnt be giving you points of mana you know, only convert hp to mana while casting spells more efficiently... while being a bloodmage. WOrks perfectly for me.

Yeah they work fine for me to. Its not giving you any extra mana, its increasing the rate of conversion. Base level is 2mana = 1 health, ie a 30mana spell costs 15 health with blood magic on. Each of those items or extra abilities increases that ratio to 3:1/4:1 (ie that same spell will cost 10health/7.5health)

The easiest way to fix blood magic is to make all the mages haemophiliacs. I take it that isn't what the OP meant?

If you're adding Rivalry points everytime you use Blood Magic then that's just open to abuse. It'd be better if when you bought the Blood Magic spec' you'd gain rivalry at a faster rate, if the character had a problem with Blood Magic. So if an action would usually grant +4 Rivalry, you gain +6.

That could even go both ways, if you took Blood Magic you'd gain friendship with Merille at a faster rate, could work  with a few specialisations.

Yeah suppose. And make fenris never gain friendship if you are blood mage, or at least very hard to do so.
