Perhaps the ancient Dwarves stored memories into it, and then it eventually just took on a life of its own. Thus the Dwarves worship the memories of their ancestors now.

I like the idea of the Red Lyrium Idol being linked to the hidden rooms and gargantuan blood sacrifices the Tevinters pulled on needlessly that were referenced in the band of three codex entries. While the BoT imply that Kirkwall may have been intended, via the glyph shaped streets, blood sewers and sundered veil as a massive summoning station, I reckon the dwarves too were involved in this. They designed and built much of Kirkwall for the Imperium, having been at peace with them. If the Rock Wraithes were feeding upon what seems to be corrupted Lyrium, then perhaps the relatively close proximity to Kirkwall was a factor in this. Also, having a particularly strong Pride demon (hubris) and the boss of the evil tomes quest both located in Darktown seems a little too coincidental.

Captmorgan72 - I had that almost exact same thought. Especially as it sings to Bartrand and Varric, much as the Archdemon/taint sings to the darkspawn and old Wardens. The Darkspawn/tainted were created when the Golden City was invaded... or so the Chantry teaches...

Wonder why Hawke was immune? Hawke touches the idol, but hears no song... and does not go mad

I had the same thought and I'd like to add a few more.

The wardens were looking for something and it seemed to be a pressing matter.  If the idol could sing, just like the Old Gods sings to the darkspawn for the darkspawn to find them and awaken them - I wonder if this had something to do with it.  While playing the game, I wondered if the idol was sort of like a locator device.  I think the dwarves who lived in that thaig knew what it was and they locked it up.  I don't think they worshipped it.  I'd come closer to saying they were guarding it to keep it from the darkspawn.

It's mentioned in the book "The Calling" that Bergen being the First Warden knew the location of the last remaining Old Gods, and I'm wondering if the idol has something to do with this.  My thoughts are it is somehow related to the Old Gods (Arch Demons).

It also appeared to me when you kill Meredith that the idol has to do with demon possession as well.  Lyrium seems to be the key regarding magic of the Old Gods and the Ancient Imperium.  I also had to question if dwarves once had the use of magic and somehow they became immune to it maybe because of their mining lyrium.

There's no evidence that the ancient thaig is near Kirkwall. In the Free Marches, definitely, but not by Kirkwall more than anything else. There's also no evidence that the red lyrium is corrupted. It's only referred to as "pure" (whatever that means) and that's it.

I personally think a Forgotten One is bound underneath Kirkwall and the Tevinters may have been messing with it and experimenting on it. That's why they're mentioned by the BoT.

i thought about the idol with the codec story about an old tieg  And just one day out of the blue they just closed the doors . And when someone dared opened the door after not hearing from the dwarf within for so long. Only to find not a soul to be found.  I think those dwarfs WERE  the ones able to use magic long ago . And maybe they were experimenting with a strong magic/spell and it drew all the dwarfs and trapped them inside of it.  And being trapped for so long it might of made them extreamly angry/evil.

ps. I also believe that sandel is one of these dwarfs that can still use magic of old. I also think he is more powerful then we know.  Maybe even so powerful that he could put flemith to shame.

Exactly what I was thinking.  I found it strange that a dragon was guarding that entrance.

Actually it was a 21st Century Ken-Doll. He was sent back in time to find out why Darkspawn and critters made of stone need lit torches, and to find the fuel to keep the campfires eternally lit to keep the spawn warm when roasting marshmallows and human entrails.

I thought it was Pop Idol, due to it's creepy and insidious nature.

It is the second time I must chastise you!

But anyway, speaking of this corruption and how Hawke would not contract it. I recall there being questions asked about it before release, with someone official saying that it would be explained why he/she does not get tainted.

Afterwards a preview said that Hawke would be changed forever after doing the ritual with the amulet from Flemeth on Sundermount. The reviewer said how he totally doesn't want to spoil, making it seem big. That made people speculate that it is connected to Hawke not getting tainted.

Maybe it got cut? Maybe this was all connected to the Idol as well? It is a minor but crucial plot element. I thought it was too minor.

Strange that they would remove something like that from the game though.  I could understand if they never intended to tell us, but creating the content and then deleting it only creates an unnecessary plot hole.

I can't find any links to back my claims up, but maybe it rings bells to anyone else?
