Hello everyone. I've gone through the game twice on hard with super-optimized builds - once as a rogue whose every auto-attack was a crit, and once as an elemental warrior that killed the high dragon in a single hit (I exaggerate) - and it's high time to try out nightmare as a mage. The problem is that I've heard horror stories of how incredibly tedious and boring NM is, and I don't exactly have time to spend half an hour on every single encounter.

SO... After doing a little research, I'd like some opinions from the mage players out there on which build will kill things the fastest in nightmare, or generally get through most nightmare encounters the fastest, assuming reasonably-skilled players:

  • Primal BloodForce Mage - high HP bloodmage with CC and FF-friendly spells
  • ElementaPrimal Mage - high magic, maximizing FF-unfriendly fire damage with some primal and CC
  • MaxiCrit Mage - one of the above, but pumping dex/cun for max crits
  • Healer Mage - spirit healer line, maximizing Ander's DPS instead
  • Some other build?
Any thoughts?

Soloing NM was reasonably easy for me with this: http://social.biowar...8/index/7023679

It's horrendously non-optimized, but, as you can see based on the video and the talent planner, the main combo is: Pull of the Abyss > Combustion Grenade > Cone of Cold > Crushing Prison > Walking Bomb. Provided you gear up to maximize CP's damage, think tactically, and choose the right target, the group fights can be made excitingly easy. You must go Force/SH, though. Without Healing Aura, you won't survive the cooldown phase between waves :)

Please note this build is hardly suited for party format. You will end up killing your own party very quickly :)

Ah. I thought of working with some sort of pull + walking bomb combo too... I'm guessing you cast both crushing prison and walking bomb on the highest HP mob you see to maximize AOE damage?

And for that matter do +% spirit damage items increase the damage of walking bomb or is it just a fixed percentage of the target's HP?

The answer is 6. All of the above!
tip; act 1 = collect lots of zap resist gear. I like setting rock guy on fire and freezing blood mage/ assissins but apart from that the 'pots of respec' rule NM.

Good build in my opinion is mix of many talent tree spells. There are many good spells in many talent trees. It would be nice if we would have more spell guides. I don't mean just list of spells, but how they work in real situation. Also some spell "information" seem to be wrong.

Usually, on the lieutenants (in the video, it was assassin), as Crushing Prison over Hex of Torment kills those reliably over a reasonably short time period.

No. It's an independent damage source. It's either 100% or 200% (if DISORIENTED) of target's hp. Since groups usually consist of identical/similar creatures, even 100% should be enough.
