Now, I'm not asking for an ME2 Suicide Mission like set-up where you give companions jobs and if you choose wisely they pull it off and live. I wouldn't have complained if this game had that, but I'm not asking for it either. It's just that the final mission lacks any kind of strategy for either side.

Hawke gives a small speech, you pick your team, and the other companions are now invincible NPCs. You dungeon crawl, boss fight, and then have a massive crowd fight for the ending. Despite this being a battle, the first of a major war, it felt like just another boss raid.

Even DA:O had you leave someone behind to hold the gates. Awakening had the choice to sack a city, defend a Keep, or save the city and hope your Keep can withstand a prolonged siege. It wasn't the greatest of endings but it felt like an actual battle. (Would it have killed the budget if we saw the defenders of the Keep fight and win or lose? Instead we have to wait for the epilogue to tell us what would have been more satisfying to see?)

I think it's fair to say there's problems with the final mission; many seem disappointed by the finale in general. But as far as the gameplay goes it was mundane and boring. There's no choices, just fighting...and largely fighting the same exact enemy types you've fought all game. And neither of the boss fights are half as engaging as the Rock Wraith or challenging as the High Dragon (which cheats with its perching over the cliff and firebombing my puny Anders:lol:).

It just feels like there were possible options here.

The Templars could siege the Gallows or assault its walls, perhaps Hawke could send a secondary team of companions around some where and expose a weakness in the mage defenses (something similar happened in the Onderon section of KOTOR2, which I know isn't a BioWare game but I'm willing to bet many here played the game). If there's a morally choice you could suggest firing confiscated Qunari gas into the Gallows and wait as the mages tear each other apart.

The Mages could play a defensive role here, but that may cost too much as reinforcements could appear to bolster the Templars. Or they could attempt to break out, or send out a companion to rally the Guard or another possible ally to attack the Templar flank? If there's a morally choice then having the mages tear the Veil on top of the Templars to have waves of demons keep them disoriented.

Something to make it feel like an actual battle. Something to make Hawke's presence on one side mean a difference (other than Hawke's plot armor assuring us that whoever Hawke picks wins). Even Redcliffe had two defense positions, recruiting members into the militia, and setting up flaming oil!

Eh, true it could have used more strategy. But I sort of enjoyed the whole thing, the statues coming off walls was rather interesting. And there's plenty of ways to amuse yourself. When the statues start clambering off walls, put everybody but your "tank" in a corner and have Varric chain misdirect to them. When they're all rounded up, toss up Haste and go nuts. I did it on Hard with a mage, was pretty fun, especially when aggro went to hell and we all scattered. Doubt you could pull this off on NM though, I haven't made it past that bloody high dragon yet and his five billion chums. The heatseeking fireballs I can handle. The obscene quantity of adds get on my nerves.

The final battle was visually entertaining. The statues coming to life felt like those old stop-motion fantasy movies. I could careless for Super-sayan Meredith but whatever. Problem was the fight was way too easy, especially as a Rogue or 2H-Warrior (also not on Nightmare, but I hate friendly fire).
ME2's Suicide Mission was awesome, but thats a different game with different gameplay elements. And in the end you still had to perform a giant terminator abortion. Still its comparing apples and oranges.

All of Act III could be redone. The final battle is the least of its worries.

It would have been more difficult if Meredith didn't roll a 1 in Strength.
