Update May 8, 2011:
Released!

Jump to the latest post for details.

WiP with a very good chance of release soon - better chance than my spellbar WiP even, since this is actually done for the most part and just a list of some things to polish instead of having to refit a lot of things. Plus it could use some playing through time to see if it breaks anything (I'd hope not and wouldn't really think so). Thanks to a suggestion on DANexus about centering the quickbar like some other games do.

One important thing to keep in mind: this won't give you more quickslots than the game supports (hardcoded at 50 it seems) BUT it will allow you to use more quickslots than your display resolution might normally support unless you have a cinema display (and even then a 2000px wide quickbar is a pain).

And you can probably guess what one row looks like.

It's self stacking in that as you drag the quickbar shorter, it starts stacking slots up to three rows (I'll have to create some external option to allow you to cap it to less than three rows if you want).

I'm not entirely happy with the experience/effects bar getting in the way. I quickly made it so it moves above the stacked quickbar, but that looks kind of weird to me. I could try automatically shrinking it, but that might make it unreadable to some people. If I moved it to another location on the screen altogether, then that might also be a solution, but probably not a favourable one. I suppose one crazy option could be rotating it on its side. Or maybe I should just offset the second and third bars by it and leave it in place. Suggestions are welcome.

The whole experience/effects bar getting in the way is a lot less of a problem on a high resolution, wide screen display.

One last thing - it should be compatible with anakin5's Advanced Quickbar even, since this is just a pure UI mod.

Adding to this, perhaps for later, maybe make it so you can scroll through the rows (i.e., 3 for the space of 2), and maybe put some up vertically on the side of the screen - but those I probably couldn't really make resizable since I can't practically save and later restore two sets of positions, unless you configured that in an external app. A compact experience/effects bar might also be more practical if I were to optionally separate some parts out.

I really like this. Since I tend to play a lot of mages, running out of quickslots have always been an issue, and while anakin5's quickbar helped, I always wished for a second row (I think 3 is obscuring the gamefied a little too much, but that's just a matter of personal preference)

Question: in the second picture, there is still a little bit of empty space under experience bar. Is there a way to shift the quickslot rows to the left so that the lock icon touches the edge of the screen?

Regardless, greatly anticipating the release! :).

Yep, it can still start on the left side of the screen.

So... if anybody has a display capable of more than 2000 pixels across (or some equivalent Eyefinity set up), can you let me know what happens to your quickbar in the regular, unmodded game if you try stretching it past where there should be 50 quickbar slots and how far past you stretched it? Or whether the quickbar just stopped expanding at that point.

I'm thinking the original UI doesn't try accounting for that completely and you'll see some interesting results. If not, then that'd also be interesting. Look for what's happening past 50 quickbar slots when dragging while the mouse is still moving, the mouse has stopped but your finger is still down on the mouse button, and when you release the mouse button. Again, if you can.

I'm practically finished this but I'm just trying to make sure it won't mess up for people with really wide displays.

Edit: OK, was able to try it using window mode and hand-editing the DragonAge.ini. In the unmodded game, it seems to pan out that as you stretch it too far past the end, the handle comes loose and eventually all your quickslots break. At least that max width can be accounted for. Hm, it looks like the unmodded game doesn't even have a long enough backing to show you all 50 quickslots, so as you stretch it out the "detached" handle is actually because the background ran out (but you can still drop icons into the space). Once it goes past 50, it breaks until you retract the quickbar handle down to 50 slots again. Or approximately, I'll have to look at that again tomorrow, maybe 49 unless I get it to snap just right - for sure the game can support 50 though.

So that seems to all be working now. Just need to make it configurable like my other mod. Or I could just make people process their own 2DA file... fine, I'll make an app. ;)

If you want to try it out early and can give feedback on it, shoot me a PM.

For defaults, I guess I'll go with nothing too surprising. Left aligned quickbars, 3 rows max, ragged rows allowed, and never compact or rotate the effect bar.

Three rows max as default doesn't seem too bad with ragged rows enabled, so say you stretch the quickbar out to 22 rows on the bottom, then that's two rows of twenty quickslots, and six quickslots on the third row.

You could also opt to centre the quickbar and those "ragged rows" could then also be centred or left aligned to the quickbar itself.

Here's its wiki page describing its features: http://ftg.wikidot.com/ftg-quickbar.
Youtube link: .

The contrast in the video and images could have been better, but I think it gets it across. I've tested it myself pretty thoroughly, but it wouldn't hurt to get some feedback on how others find it before releasing it - if there were some tweaks to make it better. Maybe for later I'll see about doing things like shoving the name and XP bar between quickbar rows as an extra option vs compacting it, and move effects by the portrait.

Again, if you want to try it out a bit early just send me a PM.
