I did the quest to the point where Danarius shows up. When he did, instead of fighting him I gave Fenris back to him. I quit the game after that, but when I came back to the Hanged Man, the game acted like I still had yet to do it (plus, Fenris was back in my party). Now, I did the whole talking thing, but now nothing happens. No fight with Danarius, but I can at least get 5 gold out of it.

I just finished up in the docks, and I found that if I went to see Merril and talk with her before I went to the Hanged Man the quest is repeatable. Danarius is supposed to be dead; I suppose that's why he doesn't appear in the cutscene this time. I just don't know about the weird head angle that Fenris has. If you sell Fenris back to Danarius again you get another 5 gold and 800 XP. You also get 15 rivalry with one of your companions.

If you leave the docks and go directly to the Hanged Man then all is normal.

EDIT: Not only is it repeatable as in you can produce it every time you reload the game, but you can always do it. Originally I thought that it only happened as long as you had a companion to talk to. Well, you can do it at anytime you want. If you give Fenris back to Danarius, the game goes into a loop, allowing you to give Fenris away for 5 gold, 800 XP and 15 rivalry points. If you sell Fenris, you get transported outside the Hanged Man. If you turn right around and go back in, the game doesn't allow you to do it again, but if you travel somewhere else then mack to the Hanged Man you get to do it again. I can't believe QA didn't catch this. It's a way to artificially boost your level by 800 XP each time and get a lot of money. Oh, and it only happens during the day.

Yeah I got this problem as well, was forced to take the long way to the hanged man after that, Hopefully the new patch 1.02 can fix this, otherwise guess we will have to continue to take the long way =(

No, it doesn't. In fact, I installed the patch 1.02 today and it doesn't address this quest. In fact, you can pursue the achievement for 100 gold, 5 gold at a time.
