I think it is generally agreed that Dragon Age: Origins is, at the moment, a very entertaining game that has its flaws and imbalances. That being said, what game doesn't? My first vanilla playthrough as a mage on nightmare was, to put it succinctly, simple. At the time, no one knew anything about the game, and I  played through with myself (mage, arcane warrior), Morrigan (spec'd for direct damage), Wynne (spec'd for healing and hexing), and Alistair (tanking). While I did enjoy the game immensely, I never had a great feeling of satisfaction after a fight.

Beginning my second play through now, I decided to use a more "role playing" formula for character selection, based off of the Icewind Dale Trilogy. I've decided to open up the idea. Note that the respecialization mod is required.

Rules are simple:
•Choose 4 characters in the list. One of them will by player controlled, obviously.
•Companions must be respec'd immediately to correspond with any requirements.
•Companions may be changed at anytime, however they must always follow the restrictions.
•The limitations must be followed at all times. Drizzt must dual wield, regardless of proficiency level.

I tried to match characters as best as possible. The format is as follows:

Icewind Dale Character (Race, class) - Dragon Age Companion; class: Specialization 1, Specialization 2
Limitations

Drizzt (Dark Elf, Ranger) – Zevran; Rogue: Ranger, Duelist
Must dual wield. Must wear light armor.

Bruener (Dwarf, Fighter) – Oghren; Warrior: Champion, Berserker
Must use axe and shield.

Wulfgar (Human, Barbarian) – Sten; Warrior: Berserker, Reaver
Must use mauls.

Catti-brie (Human, Fighter) – Leliana; Rogue: Bard, Duelist
Must use bow. Must wear light armor.

Jierdan (Human, Fighter) – Alistair; Warrior: Templar, Champion
Must use sword and shield.

*Sydney (Human, Wizard) – Morrigan; Mage: Blood Mage
Limited to the following schools: Mage, Primal, Entropy, Blood Mage

*Lady Alustriel (Human, Wizard) – Wynne; Mage: Spirit Healer
Limited to the following schools: Mage, Creation, Spirit, Spirit Healer

Bok (Golem, Fighter) – Shale

Entreri (Human, Assassin) – N/A; Rogue: Assassin, Duelist
Must dual wield. Must wear light armor.

*Note that you may not have a second specialization for the mage classes.

For those of you who haven't read the books, the connections and reasoning may not be as clear. You'll just have to take my word for it. For those of you who have read, you may notice I did not include Regis, as there is no Halfling race in Dragon Age. Also, note that Entreri is the only character I could not find a Dragon Age conterpart to, as there are no male human rogues. Therefore he is the only character you must use as the player controlled character, if you so choose to use him. I believe that you can create a very balanced and interesting party from the above characters.

Any input and feedback would be great. I myself chose the party that the Hosttower of the Arcane sent against the Companions of the Hall: Entreri, Bok, Sydney, and Catti-brie (she was captured by Entreri, and I dislike Jierdan's character).

The reason you never felt satisfaction is because you played as an Arcane Warrior, and had 3 mages in your group.

As I noted initially, I finished the game days after it was released, when no one knew how overpowered mages were. Which is why I decided to replay the game with these rules. Thank you for restating what I have said.
