I have made a series of polls designed to assess the community here's relationship with Mass Effect 2.

I want to hear from the greatest number of people in order to get a statisitcally representative picture of the current mass effect community (or at least those participating in the forums).

So without further ado, here they are!

I'm note entirely sure what people expect shooting in an RPG to look and feel like. The mechanics of Fallout 3 don't really count since you can be a melee fighter in that game. Shooting is the only way of legitimate fighting in Mass Effect so...what is it supposed to be like?

Well, that debate is ridiculous, and it has popped up so that elitists can maintain their dogmatic beliefs.

The ME games are shooter/RPG hybrids.

When I shoot, I shoot, I don't throw dice.
When I roleplay, I roleplay, I don't shoot in order for my biotic powers to be more effective.

Shooters and RPGs are equal as genres. That means, no genre's properties should consume the other's.

I never actually liked pure shooters very much and I had my problems with many of the more traditional RPGs.
Mass Effect was actually the game I'd been waiting for so long, which was, imo, a near perfect mix, apart from the inventory.
I agree that ME2 shifted that mix a little too much into the shooter direction, but I wouldn't consider it a shooter.
With the things we have been told about ME3 so far, they finally seem to get it right: The perfect game where we roleplay a PC that shoots a lot...

People might be too focused on mechanics. To me, the real great debate is labels vs. no labels.

I've never beaten a shooter. There's always a moment when I just don't see the point, get bored and go do something else. I wouldn't say it's because their gameplay or their mechanics are bad, but rather because there's too much of one thing.

However I've played ME1&2 and enjoyed it each time. Besides from having a story that matters (it's not only an excuse, an scenario for the shooting), I think I don't get bored because it intersperses shooting with talking and walking around. Shooting NPCs for an hour = tedious. Talking with NPCs for an hour = tedious. Mix it up and, for some reason, you have two hours of fun. Don't ask me why, but that's what does it for me, not how much of an RPG there's in the game, or how much of a shooter. I read this idea at CulturalGeekGirl's for the first time and thought she nailed it. She translated into words a feeling I too had but couldn't really put my finger on.

I agree, people are far too focused on the labels.  Whether or not it's a traditional RPG or a third person shooter is 100% irrelevant.  Mass Effect is a hybrid, as Phadeon said, and it's unfair to judge it as either/or when it's both.

When judging the Mass Effect games, this is what people should be looking for:
- Is the story compelling and generally well-written?
- Are the characters well designed and well-written?
- Is the game universe fleshed out and deep?
- Are the conversation mechanics good?
- Are the combat mechanics good?
- Are you able to roleplay as Commander Shepard?

If the answer to most or all of those is yes, then you have a good game.

Ok, preliminary results are thus:

Most of you regularly play shooters but the genre is not your favorite and you also have a diversified interest in games.

Most of you would rank your shooting abilities as pretty good.

And finally, most of you feel Mass Effect 2 only slightly lacked traditional RPG elements.

The actual spread between each section of the poll followed a trend of sorts. Most members (71%) voted that they played shooters between "every now and again" and "They're my favorite".

These same people seem to have rated their abilities in shooters between "Decent" and "Bona Fide Pro," proving that those that play the genre are at least capable of enjoying it (83%). It should be noted that this section could easily have been skewed by dishonesty or an overestimation of abilities and indeed appears to have been.

Lastly, most of those that participated (66%) said that Mass Effect 2 lacked RPG elements "a bit" or less.

Conversely, 29% of those that voted said they "almost never" or "never until ME" play shooters. 16% said that they were "fair" or worse at shooters and 34% said that ME2 did lack RPG elements significantly.

29% of those that voted said they "almost never" or "never until ME" play shooters.

Hmm, that doesn't sound like a very healthy variety of games.

Eh, I'm probably worse actually. I play almost exclusively shooters. There's something extremely satisfying to me about shooting things.

Honestly I can name only 3 games that I've played that weren't shooters, one of which I haven't finished yet (Darksiders).

I don't fault anyone for not playing shooters, I'm only interested in finding the source of discontent.

True, but that which is popular does not necessarily equal that which one likes.

At least in the US market, that's true. Japan has a tendency more towards RPGs, but frankly the east has been pretty weak as of late. Inafune's made that pretty clear.

Assess the community here's relationship with Mass Effect 2.

Well, it still hasn't left my disc drive yet. So I'd say the relationship is good.

The two most recent and most successful Call of Dutys (MW2 and Black Ops).

Interesting, but I wonder just how this data is to be interprated. I answered the surveys and even commented on one.

Here's the thing: if you completely ignore the term "RPG" then the discussion here becomes much easier to have. Instead of saying "RPG" people should say "I want to see feature [A], [B], and [C], but not [D]. Forget the labels.
