They seem to operate on similar effects, any thoughts?

Gravitic ring holds them if they are in the center or slows them otherwise it does not actually move the enemy, pull of the abyss pulls them to that spot.
General way is drop grav ring and then pull them all into the middle of it and have some AoE fun

They are best used in combination. If you absolutely must pick just one, go with GR.

Pull is just an instant effect spell that pulls enemies inside the area of effect to the center, and it's done. Grav Ring lasts for 20 seconds and slows everything down inside the area of effect. The closer the enemy is to the center of the area of effect, the slower they get to the point where they are essentially frozen for 20 seconds (even most bosses - Grav Ring + Petrify + Horror on alternating cooldowns usually means permanent lock down for all bosses aside from the end of act bosses).
So, as other have said, Grav ring is by far the more useful but is the most useful when combined with pull since it allows you to place all the enemies in the center.

I haven't used pull of the abyss yet, but Gravitic Ring has become an essential tool for my mage to help the party survive.
Retreat behind a chokepoint and cast it right there so that all of the enemies must pass through the center in order to reach you. This prevents assassins from one-shotting your squishies and meanwhile cast AoE spells and ranged attacks until the Gravitic Ring expires.
When I played as a rogue, I would have my mages brittle enemy assassins and my rogue would one shot them with Assassinate.
Playing as a mage, Gravitic Ring seems to be the best defense. If they outlive the Gravitic Ring, I cast glyph of paralysis (which doesn't work on Slaver Assassins and possibly Raider Assassins), Petrify, Horror or just run like hell until their stealth runs out.

I usually cast Gravity Ring in the middle of our team, then Tempest. The melee enemies (even Assassians) will be slowed when they are approaching and shocked by the tempest. Then Fernis will take care of any enemies who get too close. At the same moment, my mage, Varric and Anders can wear off the ranged attackers. This also allow the Battle Synergy to be put into good use.

I've noticed that sometimes the frozen effect of gravitic ring lasts well after the spell is done. I used it one a mature dragon at it just stood there doing nothing for the whole fight.

GR first , upgraded Misdirection Hex second, Petrify to close the sequence off. Bosses never get to take more than a few shots at your party.
