As the topic provides, I am really not sure if I need her.  I have not found anything usefull yet in the chests that she can open.  I would rather use Morrigan.  Would I miss much if I cant open some of the chests?

You would be a fool to not use her

Her buffs & lockpicking & trap disarming are very valuable

Lelianna as an archer with hunter as 2nd specialization does great damage too and the spider pet immobilizes enemies left and right

*minor spoiler*

about the only "truly" useful/unique stuff I've found in/behind locked chests/doors has been in the deep roads. That said all the little bits of extra xp you get from unlocking/disarming things can really add up if you pick everything you find, not to mention any extra loot is still extra loot that can earn you more cash in the end.

You're choice really but I'm personally something of a completionist and hate leaving locked chests behind.

If you are stickler for opening chests and locked areas, keep her around. Not only is she a main character in your quest but she is also a rouge and that helps with opening all the locks. She is also very skilled with a bow. She will also help you out a lot in Lothering when you try to adopt Sten into your party. You wont miss too too much by not opening all the chests but it does help.

I say you need her unless you build your character to be like her. Bard songs, lock picking (doors and chests), trap disarming, etc all come in handy, earn more cash and/or exp.

Selling stuff in chests is incredible. And there's a few locked armories that lead to several items you can sell if they're not otherwise worthwhile.

And a high level archer is a dang kill stealer. Give her magic arrows and she destroys enemies.

You don't NEED anyone, but she is useful.

I've never found anything useful in a locked chest, but I missed out on this toon first time through. Buffs are good, but it depends on how you want to play the game. If you don't care about balance a bard is fun. BUt if you want a really effective party, load up on mages or rogues or a DW warrior

If you don't have a pickpocket, you'll be short loot. The merchant in Lothering has a Tier 6 (or was it 7?) crossbow, for example. Even if you don't use it, that's a nice chunk of cash.

If you don't disarm/pick locks, you'll be short at least 5000xp by the end.

If your not a rogue yourself, yes shes useful.

Disarming, lockpicking, stealing are all good for more XP(stealing doesnt give xp) and money from items.

But shes more of a support role than pure DPS so dont expect massive dmg unless you spec to dual wield, tho shes already got 4 in archery, which ive found is a support tree compared to dual wield dmg. Its not a bad thing, just dont expect her to do dmg like Zevran.

If you're not a rogue, she's really useful because she's one of only two people who can pick locks and you'll always have the opportunity to recruit her before you can recruit Zevran.

like others said, if you don't care about loot or her character's charms, then maybe you should care about exp you get for unlocking chests and disarming traps. Sometimes its more then for actual fight. Some random encounters come to mind where you have 10 or so traps you get 30-40 exp at level 7 for each. They are like Christmas present :) I really think you need at least 1 rogue in the team.

I wondered the same thing about Morrigan because so many people were saying how awesome of a mage she is, but I just got so tired of her attitude towards my decisions that as soon as I got Wynne, I booted Morrigan.
As Sloth said, you don't NEED anyone. Each character has its own ups and downs and usefulness.

Leliana is great for doing rogue stuff like lockpicking and trap detecting. Until you give her Arrow of Slaying. Then she's the scariest, most dangerous thing in Ferelden...

While Rogues are designed to be DW Melee, Leilana starts as an archer which can be tough since she won't appear to contribute much. It gets much better when she gets at least Critical Shot and she helps you punk off mages, but the key is to set her to use Stealth in her tactics, since it's an automatic critical hit to attack from Stealth. So you get a crit every 10seconds, not too bad.

The arrow of slaying do a large amount of damage. Expect more than 250, i saw her doing 400+ damage.
Even if she don't have a lot of DPS, she have an awesome one shot skill. And the buffs are cools. Use her as support.

She contributes right around a quarter of my party's damage, so she's pulling her weight. Plus she's got Song of Courage going all the time, and soon she'll be a Ranger able to summon.

I don't even use her for lockpicking; my character does that. I don't care whether or not two Rogues is optimal, I could never leave Leliana behind :-)

She became a staple of my party - got her dexterity etc up and have her using two special daggers with enchantments and she does great. Also unlocked most every chest and identified most every trap which was often very helpful. I know a lot of people do not like her but I find her positivity and sweetness to be a nice counterbalance to the wonderful darkness in the game.

I have her in my standard party (along with PC dwarf tank, allistair, morrigan). She is useful and I like her for roleplaying reasons.

She can rack up SERIOUS coin if you let her pickpocket. Just remember to save in case you get caught in a bad situation.

Also, if you keep her near Morrigan and singing, she can keep most attackers 'stunned' long enough for Morrigan to wail on them.

When I know it's about to hit the fan, I replace her with Wyyne, and her and Morrigan absolutely wreak havoc on anyone foolish enough to get in my way.

Morrigan has Sleep/Horror/Nightmare with Blizzard.
Wyyne has Earthquake/Petrify/Stonefist and Fireball.

Quite the party!

I use her with great effect with my three mage party. Cone of cold coupled with two weapon riposte, archery crit shot, and stealth shatter three enemies resonably quick. Also ranger spec her and get a nice tank/meat shield at higher levels with an animal companion.

No you can always go back to most areas latter an open everything with her but to use her as one of your mains no she not worth it or any rogue for that matter.

True.
You shouldn't "need" any of the companions as such but some are fun to have along.

Fail!

Rogues are great fun as a main character, Leliana works well as an archer & I also find her useful weilding daggers.

Each to his/her own though.

Leliana is an absolute monster at 14+ spec her for ranger for a 5th party member and use this pet to protect your mage and herself via tactics with slam/overwhelm/web. With the higher end bows she had 48 dmg for me which was very close to my warriors damage at the end of the game with bow plus her pets damage.

Combine this with song of valor for stamina/mana regen and her obvious money making stealing and lock picking she is a no brainer.

Pro tip pump her cunning for better song and spec her for lethality to replace str for cunning on damage also dex. She very rarely ever gets in trouble for me either with tactic dirty fighting and pet coming to the rescue.

I would like to set her to auto steal from enemies but back line archer suits her so well.

One noteworthy downside is everytime you leave an area you need to resummon your pet and recast all party buffs as the new pet doesn't get them automatically. Also the single greatest annoyance of the ranger line is the game doesn't remember pet tactics so you need to redo these every single summon. The rage I feel redoing pet tactics every summon kills me.
