I really enjoy the combat system in this game. It's so refreshing to see a game put so much emphasis on tactics, planning, and positioning. Unfortunately, there are some tricks that make the game far too easy and unbalanced. I'm 1/3rd of the way through my second game (nightmare difficulty), and I have yet to encounter a real challenge now that I know the right spells to cast.
I want to make a mod that will change this. I want to make the game as difficult as it was for me before I knew the little tricks that made it easy, while still maintaing the game's essential character. Here's what I have so far:
1. Cone of Cold should, in general, not freeze "yellow" or "orange" opponents.
2. Increase Cone of Cold recharge time by ~20%, and decrease frozen time by ~20%, so that a mage cannot continuously freeze opponents.
3. Consumption of lyrium potions should take 50-100% longer, to encourage investment in willpower.
4. Each point of willpower should increase mana/stamina regeneration by 0.1, and there will be no base regeneration (so a character with 20 willpower will have a regeneration rate of 2).
5. Enemies will have 0 aggro against a unit in a force field.
6. Crushing prison will last for ~25% less time.
This should help nerf the strategy I've been using. Most of my nerfs are directed toward mages, because I don't think warriors are overpowered and I'm not too familiar with the mechanics of rogues. My goal is to preserve (though slightly weaken) the ability of mages to disable large numbers of low-level opponents, but make them significantly less effective on higher-level opponents.
How to Balance Combat?

1+2.Cone of Cold just needs a bigger cooldown, 15-20 I'd say.
3. I agree that potions need to work differently. Increasing the cooldown of all potions should be good enough though. Also, making it so that the effect is based off willpower rather than magic.
4. This seems fine as well.
5. Agreed, it should reset aggro.
6. Works for me, I never use that spell but everyone seems to rave about it, it's just a single target disable, it has nothing on blood wound, sleep, paralysis explosion etc.
I think mages are mostly fine, but some spells could use minor buffs/nerfs.
The aoe spells, Blizzard to Cloud to Inferno to Mana Clash should be changed so they can't be abused so easily. Require them to need a line of sight (assuming it's possible) should be good enough to ensure that they are trickier to use and pull off.
I think other classes may need some balancing as well. In short, dual wielding for both classes is far superior to any other choice. Shield+sword and 2h just don't compare as far as utility is concerned really DW has great dps, and lots of decent aoe. 2h's dps is just too weak and their abilities don't make up for it. Tanking in general is hardly necessary, just use taunt on any warrior to pull aggro of mages, any warrior will do.

these are great opinions but who are you competing against ? Its noa a multiplayer game so if you want longer cool down for spells and potions just do it yourself ...

In theory I could, but it's more practical to change the rules to reflect how I want to play. Besides, if the balancing works then I could create a mod that others could use too.

well i still think you should just play the way you want according to your "rules". Not because you think colldowns are too fast or spells too powerful everyone agrees. Im not, but a lots of people are having a serious tough time beating this game...

Game balance was invented long before WoW, and has nothing to do w/ PVP
BG2 had multiple balance patches
