Hi guys. Last night I took a wee stroll to Horizon. I was in a bit of a hurry, so I took FB as my bonus, and Zaeed and Garrus with their Incisors. Things went incredibly well, up until that danged boss fight. Usually my strategy with that Praetorian is just take potshots at him as we play ring around the rosy around some cover, but that takes forever, so I took the Cain, figuring I'd toast him in one shot.
The times I hit him when I was out in the open, I'd get killed in the fallout. When I eventually started hitting him from cover while he was in the air at the start without barriers yet, he'd instantly hit the ground with all his barriers up and only half armour. Was that a glitch? And the most important question, what's the quickest strategy for that Praetorian? Is the ring around the rosy thing the only option? Thanks.

It's supposed to recharge barriers when it takes enough damage. I suppose when you hit it with the Cain, it instantly takes so much damage it triggers the recharge.

I just run around the ramp structure in the corner and shoot/warp it until it dies.

You need to remove the biotic barrier before firing Cain. That way all of the damage will go to it's armor.
Here's a decent video showing another method

Thanks a lot for your answers, guys, and the link, it was a helpful video. So I guess it wasn't a bug about him suddenly having barrier, looks like it goes up to full if he's taken too much damage.IMO, it's more of an annoying boss fight than a challenging one. I prefer taking down big enemies/ bosses with my brains, instead of just grinding them. One that was more fun to take down was in the Overlord DLC, when you're at the Hammerhead part, trying to take down the shield generators to the crashed geth ship, if you do it right you can trick the cannon into blowing up the generators for you. Discovering that was a lot more fun than what I'm doing now with this dang Praetorian.

I fluked the geth friendly fire on my first Overlord playthrough and have used it every time since.

As regards the Praetorian, the trick is to do as much damage as possible in the short window available between taking down the barrier and it doing it's recharge thing - when it slams into the growned and is invulnerable, it recharges it's barrier. Hit it with warp, heavy weapons, whatever you've got that's optimal against armor. It can be a grind, or you can nuke it with Cain.

I've also found that unless you use Tactical Cloak , the Praetorian will completely ignore your squadmates, So I've started just ordering them out of the way and ignoring them. It makes the fight go faster as well, when you have access to all of their abilities and they take what pot-shots they can.

Doesn't it always ignore your squadmates. Don't think I've ever seen it kill one of them.

They act a bit stupid sometimes and run up to it, and then are caught in its insta-kill radius when it drops and recharges its Barrier.

Yeah but it doesn't actually shoot them. Killed two of them on insanity last night without worrying about my squadmates. Everything went fine, nobody died.

If you place your squadmates out of the way but still within visual range, they will kill the praetorian for you. All you have to do is keep behind cover while it tries to shoot you.

Another trick (unrelated to speedkilling) is to sick a Combat Drone on the Praetorian, and then play peek-a-boo with it. Whenever you're out of LOS and the Drone attacks, the Praetorian tends to turn its attention to the drone, giving you a longer window of time to shoot the Praetorian. The trick makes this and the Oculus fight very easy - when I do it, sometimes the AI bugs and stops attacking altogether.
