I'm having huge problems with a part of this quest.
Right after you intercept some darkish meeting in a warehouse in the docks, there's a fight going on with about 2 templar hunters, 1 templar lieutenant, 1 enchanter + countless fodder templars and mages.

How in the hell do I get past this? The hunters almost 1hit my entire group, (Hawke mage, Aveline, Anders, Isabela) except Avelin. They are the goddamn worst enemies in the game, High Dragons are like babies against them. I play on Hard.
Btw who made up the concept of a templar rogue?  WTF. :alien:

i really don't understand how some ppl have this problems with rogue mobs on hard ...i play on hard and somethimes Isabela and Anders get oneshot backstabb ..but that's rare...sry i replay with no answer to your question ..but i really don't have 1 exept ...try to move your companions around far from the place where the rogue went stealth 'till he reappears ...not much of a solution but is all i have

aoe spells break stealth, bring fenris and spirit pulse or something
if you play hawke mage im sure you can think of something aoe to throw around vulnerable targets
also standing with back to the wall makes rogues backstab up front, dealing less damage

If there's a wall nearby, get your back to a wall. If no wall, get to a choke point (hallway, doorway, bridge, etc). Put down an aoe at your feet. Varric's SoA, Merrill's WotE, Fenris' Spirit Pulse, mage Hawke has a handful of aoe spells.

Building on your group setup, you have a few ways to avoid or significantly mitigate backstabs. Isabela you can put into stealth, Aveline should have flanking immunity anyways with that talent of hers so the only real issues are Hawke and Anders. Dunno about you but when I take double mages, I make one of them have Imp Barrier and that party-wide blue bubble shield thingy whose bleeding name eludes me at the moment. Between the bubble and Aveline's rally spreading her Defense aura to the party on top of you having your back to a wall, a frontal backstab hit is mitigated quite a bit. Also, once you hear one of them break stealth, you can see the intended target before they actually get hit. Throw up a barrier on the unlucky sod and set everybody else on the hunter.

If you're a force mage, it gets even simpler - grav ring and abyss pull can pretty much take an entire wave out of commission for several seconds while you blast down a hunter. And with two mages in Hard it's highly recommended that both have Rock Armor. It's pretty much mandatory in NM.

Of course, ideally both of them shouldn't be in stealth at all. Hunters are pretty much first priority for me, I can deal with the Lieut's aura once they're dead. Petrify/Horror one, crushing prison on the other and blast down at least one, hopefully both (depending on crits). If one manages to slip, get your back to a wall and rearguard until he pops back up

When you see the rogue, hit pause and focus on them completely. Unfortunately I don't think you're group is best equipped to deal with them but this is what I would do.

1) If Hawke has Hex of torment: cast it
2) Aveline: shield bash or pummel strike = stagger
3) Hawke : Chain lighting or crushing prison.
4) If you Hawke and Aveline have both oft he abilities listed up there repeat.
5) Hawke: Some spell like horror to stop him from attacking or stealthing again
6) If Isabella has twin fangs use it.
7) Aveline uses shield bash or pummel strike again
8) Isabella uses explosive strike vs staggered rogue

As a general rule, when they unsealth all your party members should attack them, first preference with CCC, second preference to control them with stun or knockdown, third preference best damage spell.talent you've got.

They shouldn't be 1 hitting anyone unless you have serious constitution issues with your support.

Also just petrify, horror, crushing prison, knockdown to keep them from moving and healing. And lay in the damage. You really just want to have a build that can take out an individual rogue instantly, most obvious was is with CCC (stagger then chain lighting, petrify then mighty blow or archers lance).

Put your back to a wall and disable them with spells and talents. Also, Dog does a great job of soaking a few backstabs.

Poor Dog. :(

LOL!  You know, the dog continues to be one of my favorite "characters" in the series.  All of his interactions with the other party members are great.  I mean, the bits with Sten and the dog in DA:O are priceless.  In DA2 his role as the guard recruit trainer was really enjoyable, as well as his other various bits.  Playing cards with Varric but losing because of his "tail wag" tells?  Awesome.  Check plus.

Does it mean that I hate bioware employees when I name my dog after them.? I.E.  Gaider, Priestly, etc. Image IPB

that's the only quest where rogues bothered me too, I ran back up the stairs into the room and hold my party, while my hawke used some forcemage spells to slow them down and back them away (and cast AoE spells) when Anders used some Ice spells and kept healing and positioned Fenris in the door taking on the heaies (With support healing from anders) and Varric kept on bursting different shot at minor ones and cloaking us....

Oh and Dog is handy as always :)

Dogmeat !!

Do you have stonewall on aveline ? she can absorbs backstabs realy well with it (improved).
Try to pull them dont run into open and get surrounded.
Use CC + CCC to blow the assasins . chain lightning on straggered or explosive strike (isabela) on Brittle.

also this :
Templar type C=low, E=normal, F=normal, N=normal, S=low.
so use correct staves.

Any game that parodies the 'dogs playing poker' painting is aces in my book. I never imagined I'd like DA2's dog as much my DAO one. But in his own way even better since he doesn't take up a slot and still gets plenty of interactions.

I would agree about dog =) on my first Hawke I completely missed that you should continue to click on him to see more of him. On my second Hawke in Act 3 I finally got to see Varric and Barim playing cards. My dogs are always called Barim. Sorry ... back to fighting stuff on the tread. I always play on normal so I haven't really got anything to add =)
