I just wish we could have more culture shock moments. One of the things I love most about Sci-fi.

Batarians have hair. Revelation says they do. Reason you don't see it ingame is due to the engine.

Why do all the sentient alien species only have 2 breasts? Wouldn't it make biological sense for some of them to have, say, 4 or 6?

Revelation also says they have long sinuous necks.  And that volus don't wear exo-suits.

What makes you think the Quarians have breasts?

Tali could have cancer.

If I recall correctly, Anderson mentions in one of the books that the female Salarian Information Broker has short hair.

Uh, no. The narration says she's shorter than a human, but nothing about short anything else.

No, I'm pretty sure Anderson mentions that she has short hair when he first sees her. Granted, I have not read the book in a long time, and I don't have it with me to check, but I'm pretty sure she had hair.

Heck, amatuer alien sociologists probably did their own sort of social-modeling by hairstyle. 'Military caste only grows short hair on males. female military are of certain shapes. Old humans see hair change shades like skin pigments. Humans with spiked 'mohawks' generally of the 'punk' caste.'

This is the best. Thing. Ever.  My dream is now to sit in on alien Soc 101 and listen to what they have to say about humans. It's odd to imagine being on the outside looking in, even on someting like hair. I suppose it would seem rather strange to all of the other species who either don't have hair (Turians, Salarians, Asari) or who have really short fuzz instead (Batarians).

They seem to equate physical features that they don't posses with ones that they do. For example, Garrus compliments Femshep's hair in lieu of a fringe, and the guys at the inter-species bachelor party all identify parts of the Asari that look similar to their own species. I'm not sure that means that they have no concept of what hair is, though.

That makes me wonder if aliens who work in public relations have been forced to take "Human Orientalion" classes in order to bring them up to speed on things like body language, expessions, and basic cultural practices. Since it appears that humans have been expanding extremely rapidly, there's probably a greater need for those who know how to deal with them effectively. There's the potential for a lot of misunderstandings based on varations in culture. A fight could start over something that's offensive to one species but not to another.

Humans are probably even more problematic to deal with than most species. The codices and the games seem to indicate that other species don't have much variation in culture, at least not large enough to cause tension if you don't see it.

Hell Earth is still divided into nations, each with its own languages, cultures, and appearences.

This may be relevant from o technical pov:
Quoted from a thread in the old forums:

Patrick Weekes wrote on 04 July 2009 10:01PM...

strictly engine and graphics limitations. no reason hair doesn't work in ip. if engine permits, would love to see aliens that are furry (kzin? from ringworld)? or even just aliens with human levels of hair coverage (elcor with thick arm hair to protect against tripping, injury on high-grav world, for example).

At least that was the reason at the time.

That's true. The council races have had thousands of years to form their own species-wide cultures. Humans put up a united front with the Alliance, but I wonder how united they truly are. At least those new translators have gotten us past the language barrier.

The difficulty of dealing with humans in general may also be a cause of some of the resentment for us. Other new races usually have to take the time to settle in before gaining any power, and the rest of the galactic community gets used to their particular quirks over a longer period of time. However in our case, we went from being complete newcomers to having a council seat in record time.

Not exactly record time... the Salarians and Asari formed the council 20 years after their first contact. And yes, I constantly bring this up. Shhh.

I honestly think the human history of representative government is a big thing for us, here. Any species with that sort of history is going to make more of a stink over not having any actual power or representation in the government, while a military and deference-to-authority race like the Turians are likely to be more patient. Also, the Turians had just finished a millenium-long civil war when they were brought in to deal with the Krogan, it probably took them a while to get their own stuff together enough to have a unified voice.

You obviously have never seen Liara's nether regions on lazy Sunday. That's one eternity I'm not embracing until it gets intimate with a razor.
