If you have time pick it up and go through it. The ruleset was excellent, the gameplay was fun, and story was involving. I also went through the The Shadow of the Avatar series for the events preceding BG I. However, some things age like a fine wine, computer games tend to age like last week's roast beef sandwich. It is 10 years old. Due to the isometric overhead approach, BG II should fare better then some other games, like Tomb Raider One or so...
Kind of wish Dragon Age was it's own D&D realm using the ruleset instead of the one Bioware designed. I do like the Dragon Age ruleset, but not much really compares to the complexity and flexibility of D&D.

and of course character development, sadly the AD&D rules were IMO far better than the new KOTOR rules used in DAO where a mage can learn stealing ....

Dragon fights and combat in general is much more satisfying in BG2 because of 6 person party and better enemy variety/tactics

Dragon fights in BG 2 were epic. Beating Firkraag took me like an entire night of planning and fighting, haha. This was before I found out about the cloud-kill bug, though.

IMO what you should do is rather than going fully retro. Try going backwards in time and see if you like doing that.
I would first try playing NWN2+Mask of the Betrayer. If you like that try playin KotOR. If you like that go to Arcanum(from the creators of Fallout FYI). If you like this go to BG1+2. Don't forget to play fallout 1+2.
All RPG's above I totally recommend.
If you like FPS RPG's like Fallout 3 you might want to try Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines (from the creators of Fallout FYI). If you like this and want to go more retro I would suggest trying Deus Ex (Part 1 only) and System Shock 2.
i played all those games as well. I liked them all especially neverwinter nights II. .

The 2D graphics wouldn't bother me even today, as they offered a richer climate with (imo) better drawing and art.
3D stuff can look pretty shabby, armour clipping, stupid expressions, glitching etc. Remember in the world of RPG, one silly graphical issue will remind you that you are playing a game, and take you out of the zone.

Yeah y ou have to get the expansion SoA too... must play
Actually, "Shadows of Amn" is the name of the original Baldurs Gate 2 without the expansion included. The expansion is called "Throne of Bhaal" and is simply the best expansion ever made

BG is very very good (I think it was better than DA: Origins).
Less crappy dialogue and FAR less craptastic cut scenes.
Unless the "story' was your main draw for DA, I think you'd like BG.
I'm sorry but i think you're suffering from a bit of fanboy'ism here. The dialogue in BG2 is never better than DA, not in content and definatly not in execution. As for the cut scenes.....WTF? Seriously, how can u even compare?
I disagree. Irenicus' dialogue and the voice acting for it was tremendously well done.
Well the actor that voiced him could read the phonebook and it would sound epic. That doesn't mean the writing in that game, as a whole, exceeds this one.

I know. NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer is probably one of the best RPG's I have ever played. Finally Obsidian made an epic game with an epic ending to match. This is why I can't wait for Alpha Protocol. I am hoping that they figured something out with Mask of the Betrayer.

How can you say that just the dialoque between Minsc and Boo or Minsc and Jan concerning Boo is worth it

Oh, and come on. Minsc and Boo are irreplacable, and Jan was a riot. Nothing in DA really compares to them....
SPOLIER SPOLIER for those who have not played BGII
I almost fell out of my chair when Jan tried to kidnap Boo from Minsc

I should also say that the end of the expansion to Baldur's Gate II (when you're reading the ending biographies/epilogues of all your party members) is one of the VERY few times (if not the only time) that I can recall actually getting a bit choked up by a game. BG 2 was just an amazing experience, full of nothing at all but win.
I had to refight the battle once just because of how the first fight effected Aeria i could not sleep till i reran it
to the op and once you start seeign the mods that were made for BGand BGII you can see what the furtuer holds for DAO

For some reason, unknowned, i never played Baldurs Gate 2 (neither the first one)
Should i play Baldurs gate 2 ?
To me, DA:O is more like NWN2 so you might consider playing NWN2 and expansion packs.

I recommend both BG and BG2. I'm interested to see more people play BG so they can see how a BioWare-style RPG works with more open exploration. BG2's exploration is a lot like DAO's, while BG allows you to wander off if almost any direction just to see what you find.
I agree altough i loved both BG and BGII i much prefered BG because of the openess of it
