@ Corker- I just had a look at the foreword and I think that book is going to be extremely useful. Not only does she discuss some very practical issues, from the sounds of it, but some of her underlying themes fit right into some character concerns that are likely to play a large part in part two. Looks good!

Well it's not like you have to deal with these any more than you need to deal with details of ballista maintenance or feeding the mabarierrant_knight wrote...
and I really didn't want to deal with the logistics of horse care and survival.

Well...horses are alive, and people have relationships with them, so it's a bit different. Yeah, I could have put them in and then ignored them, but that's not my way.tmp7704 wrote...

The other question is how well armoured the opposing sides are....
It's very weird in that in dragon age that apparently the banns can call up so many well armoured people (yet we meet Alistair at the beginning of Dragon age and all he wears is splintmail...)
(this may sound silly but do we ever get any scenes that show cavalry/horses in Ferelden...the Orlesians' chevaliers apparently are a heavy armoured mounted cavalry..but I don't remember Ferelden using it)

There are no horses depicted in the game anywhere. There are horses mentioned in the novels, so Fereldans do have them. As I said somewhere upthread, I picture them having light cavalry versus the Orlesians' heavy horse.
In the shot of the Redcliffe army marching to the final, they do show unarmored militia.

One side will likely be slightly better armored and equipped than the other, so that's certainly something to consider and can probably add to the scenario. I expect that they will take heavier losses, especially from archers, making it fairly vital to deal with the archers quickly. Good thought!

Makes sense if you see Ferelden as 90% hills and valleys...During Origins (including expansions like Leliana's song and Awakening), I don't remember a lot of outdoor areas which looked conducive to say massive charges.
Might be a case of simply Ferelden not being one where cavalry could be a factor.

Virulent Walking Bomb.
If enemies are too weak to live and chain it, fireball and walking bomb.
Mana endurance is irrelevant because a force clustered as it was in Ostagar is not going to last 6 minutes let alone six days.
Fights with cannons and artillery did not last six days with medieval infantry tactics. A Mage is more mobile, accurate and possibly more intelligent/educated than a medieval artillery/cannon unit.
In game mages are a huge unknown. Very few people seem to separate their fears from magical capability. Enemy mages with unknown capabilities are going to destroy the morale of a conscript force. People in Fereldan have a particular fear of being turned into toads.
