Most underrated games?

-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Sky Version. Hell, might as well add pretty much every roguelike ever while I'm at it. Yes, the gameplay is different from the main games, but the story is excellent, the characters are good, and its ultimately a satisfying experience.
-Deadly Premonition: Oh man, where to begin...yes, the graphics aren't exactly Crysis, but the gameplay is solid, the atmosphere is chilling, and the story and charecterization are outstanding. The ending sequence was one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen in a video game.
-Sonic Chronicles: Yeah, I went there.
-Neverwinter Nights 2: The story isn't exactly the best, but the characters were good. and MoTB improved on the original's flaws in pretty much every way.
-Nier: This game is simply beautiful. Amazing story, believable characters, and full of moments sure to tug at your heartstrings. No RPG fan should miss it.
-Splatterhouse (modern): Captures exactly what the Splatterhouse is all about; pure mindless, gory, over the top FUN. And the Terror Mask is hilarious.

It's the most cinematic game I've ever played. Just like a movie but interactive! Yet it received lower scores than it should have gotten because everyone thought it was going to be a sandbox game like GTA IV.

Um Jammer Lammy - Great songs,Loveable characters and hours of rhythm keeping button tapping fun. Overshadowed by the Parappa the Rapper games but i think it's much better than those games.

Another one is actually Icewind Dale, which was heavily criticized for its linearity, but come on, it's linear as any other modern game. And it uses the best strategic engine for RPGs ever. And there's so much snooow. And has a good story.

Also, Resonance of Fate. It's one of the most original games I have played this whole gen. The setting is an extremely interesting take on the post-apocalyptic scenario, the characters are very likeable, and the combat's amazing - it's a sort of party-based tactical acrobatic third person shooter - inside an RPG.

I agree. It's one of my favorite games because of the way that the characters were written than because of the whole story.
Ando also Mirror's Edge.

Dragon Age 2.
Heh, I didn't want to go there, but I do agree. To me DA2 is about on the same level as DA:O. Better in some aspects, worse in some aspects.
Both games are easily in my current gen top 5.

Alpha Protocol is painfully underrated from what I played of it.
Not too many games spring to mind that qualify for this. Underrated is not the same thing as unpopular or overlooked. I would not consider Dragon Age II underrated for instance. It has way too many passionate supporters to qualify. An underrated game would be a release that garnered mostly average to poor ratings, had negative word of mouth spread about it, but was not nearly as bad as all that implies.
Which brings me back to Alpha Protocol. That game got slammed like a tennis ball during the U.S. Open all because it had RPG abstractions in its mechanics and dodgy AI. The bugs were not nearly as bad as some reviews claimed. I think it was Destructoid in particular that panned AP as if it were complete trash. Meh.

Rival Schools are good choices. I liked playing Sakura more in that game than the Street Fighter series.
.
Sakura really became a good character in that game and it was the one that really made me like her. Still my favourite RS character will always be Akira Kazama she kicks ass and then apologises for it afterwards XD

Heh, I remember being somewhat hyped for Alpha Protocol, but I never actually got it.
I think having a following doesn't stop games from being underrated though. Nier and Resonance of Fate are two perfect examples of that. There are tons of people who loved those games, and they were both highly regarded by RPG-dedicated reviewers, but it unfortunately overlooked by mainstream critics/the general public, Nier more so.

I never played those, since I don't have a PSP, but I'm a HUGE Disgaea fan.
Disgaea 4 is up there with Mass Effect 3 as my most anticipated release of the year

That and ID2 are two of my all time favorites! Very good feel to them...a lot like PnP D&D.
I really need to take a good, hard look at Alpha Protocol...every time I see someone post about it I get a little more interested.

I think the majority of people are just people who jump on the bandwagon of hating XIII while humping the leg of FFVII and creaming over Sephiroth XD

Since we are going from underrated games to popular games that seem cool to bash for some gamers i'll throw Final Fantasy XIII in there. I can never understand the ammount of hatred it gets compared to some other Final Fantasy games. Has a great storyline and some great music and a neat little combat system. Plus its one of the more exciting turn based combat systems i've played usually they are very static and slow but this one moves really fast paced.

I love FF13 too. And if you think about it, there are A LOT of parallels between the FF13 and DA2 "situations".
Both took the respective series in new directions and were fairly experimental in some ways, both had some obvious flaws (just replace "linear" with "repetitive"). Both were well received by critics (but not as much as their predecessors), and both got some serious fan backlash, partly due too not sticking to the formula enough - a lot of people obviously wanted another Baldur's Gate/FF7.
And oddly enough, DA2 came out exactly 1 year after FF13
