I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but Alpha Protocol really is criminally underrated. It’s certainly up there amongst the best Western RPGs despite its flaws.

still want to check this out, if i wasn't in the middle of another oblivion playthrough and a fallout new vegas playthrough i'd probably give this game a go

After beating FFXIII, I seriously didn't feel any pull towards any of the characters. Whatever can be said of
FF VII, it's characters are quite endearing and not easy to forget, even the ones that are hated. I'm willing to bet
five years from now, Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa, and especially Sephiroth will still be burned onto gamers' minds...Lightning and company not so much. More than 13 years after the fact, I can recall Knights of the Round and One-Winged Angel. I can barely recall anything memorable happening in FF13. There's a reason why FF7 has reached legendary status....

Underrated:

Legend of Dragoon
Suikoden 3
Quest For Glory 2
Silent Bomber
Colony Wars
Space Station Silicon Valley
Ascendancy

Legend of Dragoon definitely.
I don't know why it got such low scores compared to other PSX RPGs. It was just as good as all those others. I really enjoyed that game. But I do have to say the voice acting was pretty bad in the cinematics.

Metro 2033.

This. Great game that didn't get near the amount of attention it deserved. Great story, interesting characters, awesome atmosphere, (not litterally) cool weapons and enemies and a PC who's voice almost made me go gay. I'd say even better than Garrus's.

Colony Wars

I loved that game sooooooooooooooo much!

I have no idea if it's been said, but I'll say Dark Void. But (and this is important) only if you bought it after the price dropped a long way, and not at full price. Since it's now around the price of a big DLC, it's well worth it.

I'll second the vote for The Darkness.

I'm gonna throw a vote in for Halo Wars. That game seemed to get savaged for not being an FPS and for being 'too simple' for a RTS, but it's probably my second favourite in the franchise after Reach.

The Ghostbusters game had a lukewarm reception too, but turned out to be quite decent. The ghost trapping is strangely addictive, so long as you have none of the dunk upgrades that trap them instantly. I also love the banter between the Ghostbusters, but I put that down to being a fan of the movies.

I have to add the Galatic Civilizations franchise to my list.
Both 1 & 2 were pretty well reviewed and pretty much eveyone I've mentioned them to who's played them loved them, but they seem to always be taking a back-seat to the "Civ" franchise which is a shame.
They both were far superior to any Civ game as 4x turn-based Strategy (IMO) but just seem to have been out-marketed in the same way that Betamax got out-marketed by VHS back in the day.
Betamax was far superior to VHS in every aspect but simply lost the Marketing Wars.
Anyone who hasn't played GalCiv should give it a try if you like that kind of Game.

Dragon Age II. It improves on the original in almost every way, like story, characters, gameplay, sound, dialogue, etc., but it gets heavily criticized for trivialities. The game is criticized because it feels different but in this case different means better because Origins was a broken mess with one minute load screens, a cliché storyline, talking props instead of characters, etc.

This. Best corridor shooter on the market. Especially how, especially since you could break the vicous cycle of violence and actually get another ending. Unlike Modern Warfare 2, where you HAVE to blindly follow orders (which then bring the world to ruin. Okay, that was the point of the story, but still...)

Silent Hunter III.

To be fair, it is underrated for a good reason - stock version of the game is a broken piece of trash. However, from day one it was evident Silent Hunter packs some serious untapped potential. As a result, an absolutely astonishing fan community full of talented modders and programmers has born around it. Over the years, fans have modded this broken, dynsfunctional almost-game into an incredibly immersive, realistic and exiting display of WWII-era submarine warfare.

Homesite of a mega- mod that started it all by presenting SH III with a functional framework of sorts for other modders to build upon.

Yeah, that's a good one. I replayed it last year, think it's a bit clunky in how it's aged but it's still a rather impressive game. And the score is amazing.

I think one which is quite underrated is Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura.
Another one is actually Icewind Dale, which was heavily criticized for its linearity, but come on, it's linear as any other modern game. And it uses the best strategic engine for RPGs ever. And there's so much snooow. And has a good story.

Hey, I was gonna say Arcanum!  As soon as I saw the thread title, I immediately thought, "Arcanum."  It has an amazing story and interesting lore, but suffers from rather poor gameplay mechanics.  I think it was underrated because it didn't get much advertisement, due to Troika being a brand new (and ultimately short-lived) company.

Icewind Dale is also amazing.  Been playing it recently in fact.  People rag on it for not having much dialogue, and it is more about combat in the D&D engine.  But the setting (Forgotten Realms in general, Icewind Dale in particular) is wonderful, and the story is quite interesting, especially if you had read the Icewind Dale trilogy by R.A. Salvatore prior to playing. :wizard:

Agreed. Could turn out horribly bugged (user-patching really is a blessing) but was awesome. Shelly - the pet turtle...*sigh*
I also have to agree with Metro 2033, Resonance of Fate and Alpha Protocol, all of those were great fun, though I got stuck with RoF (couldn't win one of the battles).

I'd also have to add Dark Messiah (the first game that really made me appreciate good voice acting).

Quite a few of those games never really did get a lot of marketing and ads, did they? Really a shame 'cause a lot of people just missed them - that's my guess.

QFT.  And I'm a huge fan of the Civ series, but GalCiv is pretty excellent, if not as accessible.

I'm so glad I found the Off Topic forum... people can actually mention DA2 as an underrated game and the thread doesn't devolve into misery.

Now I will try to be on topic and say FFVIII. The DA2 of it's time? FF fans seem to give it a hard time for reasons I've never cared to read up on. I guess a lot because it had to follow up the epic FFVII. But FFVIII was the first time I comandeered the playstation from my little brother and said to myself... video games really can be for girls.

Jagged Alliance 2

Best mix of financial management, strategic planning and tactical combat i have ever seen.

You are hired to put together an elite band of mercs to invade a fictional 3rd world country inorder to
overthrow a ruthless dictator.
Equip your mercs with over a hundered different real world weapons, body armor, equipment, ammo
and etc.

It is absolutely a must for anyone who apreciates squad-based tactical turnbased combat games.

You and your agenda against FF7 and all thats right in the world.

I hated FF13 for the same reason I hated FF8 and FF12. I found the characters and story to be awful with absolutely no redeeming qualities. A combination of bad VA, terrible dialogue and a story I just couldn't get into left me feeling cold and let down. I quite liked the gameplay and music, the setting was gorgeous and Lightning was ok in parts but good god the rest of the cast.....I'd kill them all given half a chance. The story may actually have been good but I dunno every time a cutscene started the only thoughts in my head were "SHUT UP!! SHUT UP!! SHUT UP!! If you say the word hero again I'm going to war with the Japanese over it!!"

I figured Lightning would be something you like out of the game. She's just a female version of Cloud complete with a great deal of broodyness and learning a life lesson and growing up through it XD

I don't have an agenda against FFVII i just think the constant fanwank over it gets ridiculous and that it isn't any better than other games in the series.

Funny I always thought she was a **** and if she had the nerve to smack me like she did everyone else almost, I'ld have choped her head off, and carry it around on a stick. Short of that almost ALLL of the characters pissed me off.

Snow, I LOVED when his little rebels got there asses kicked I litterally yelled when it went all to hell "SEE thats what you get, you wanted to play big tell all these people that you all can win without even the SMALLEST amount of military tactics and now your all dying in droves and you don't get why? That the reality of war dumb ass."

Then theres that punk ass kid, the annoying girl, the Arrun Wannabe girl. Lightnings sister...., and mr Fro. Who half the time when he spoke I wanted to reach into the TV and smack him. I seen no growing up from any of them myself, but ehh. Gameplay was good, well better than all the last crap since 7. But just the characters pissed me off majorly.

That being said though I loved playing FF7, I didn't like Cloud in the least, most of the time anyhow.  And Sephy, always figured he was bat **** insane and needed to be put down. Only people I like from that game funny enough was Rufus, the Turks, Vincent, and Cid, though Yuffie's people were okay too...hated Cat Sith. I liked the Story in 8 however, gameplay mechanics killed that game for me though. Generally I just don't even bother with FF anymore.

No One Lives Forever and No One Lives Forever 2.

Why are they underrated? Because nobody bought them.
