The type of small story missions you suggest would not go over well with most of the fanbase. They expect a significant story, character interaction, depth and polish. You won't get that if you just crank out a 'rescue/assault/save/destroy X' mission every couple of months.

This.

And again I say - "I understand where you're coming from, but instead of not doing it at all, they could try it and see how the fans react. Or, alternatively, create a poll to see who would be interested in such content. The idea I made was basically your typical random encounter. The only difference is that perhaps the stakes are higher and the mission is longer."

See, I'm one for story too, especially considering I'm a writer. However, some times I just want a moment to escape all that work and save a crew and civilians on a pleasure cruise, from some space pirates. :P

They don't have to make a poll to determine what the fans want from DLC, that's fairly obvious from these boards alone. Each time they release a DLC people comment on it's quality, what they want to see, and what they did/didn't like. They compare that with the data they get from how people play and go from there. LOTSB was fairly well recieved, Arrival not as much. Since the sidequest missions your talking about would be closer to Arrival I dare to say that they would not be as well recieved as DLC like LOTSB.

Any post-release Mass Effect content is welcome, and i'm very grateful that BioWare have supported ME2 so long but I can't say that I haven't found the bulk of it pretty underwhelming. Lair was the exception to the rule in that it was of the standard I was expecting of them all along but it was still poor value for money relative to its initial price tag.

They've never amazed me with their DLC like Bethesda or R* do routinely. I'm usually disappointed with BioWare dlc in the same way that Ubi Montreal always disappoints me.

Yes, Bethesda definitely does a good job with their content. I was quite hoping that Bioware would follow suit, but somehow making a great game makes them worry that anything else will be unsatisfying. However, in some ways I think they did that to themselves. I mean, people liked Origins for a reason. You got to choose your own beginning and though it didn't really do much for the story, you at least found something unique about it. I don't deny it would have been nice to play through Shepard's Origin mission either, whether it were the failed ones or otherwise.

If you've followed Bethesda/Obsidian and Fallout: NV you'd recognize a lot of the same questions about "why does it take so long to announce a new DLC?" or "it's been X months since Y, where's Z?" or "Rockstar can do X, why can't you?"

Truthfully, i think everyone looks at other games and assumes that the grass is greener when it's 9/10 times the same grass, with the same types of expectations and same issues.

New Vegas is Obsidan's baby only licensed and published by Beth and the Obsidian NV team is a very small one compared to the team that Bethesda had for Fallout 3. It's a wonder it ever got out the gate. In retrospect don't think it was wise of them to commit to three more multi-platform releases and then Bethesda the publisher goes and leaks that there could be up to five more in the works. Now that is work ethic.

It's understandable that Obsidian would struggle to live up to high watermark that Bethesda set for FO3 but even so their ambition is as palpably admirable as it is foolhardy. You can't say that about BioWare, thats for sure. In any event let's wait and see before casting final judgement.

FO:NV is not a Bethesda project, so I wouldn't tar them with the same brush if I were you.

Was "Arrival" really not that well received? I actually enjoyed it, particularly when I realized that there was so much more to it then I expected. Bioware threw a curve ball and frankly, I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm afraid it isn't that simple OP. If you had any idea how hard it would be for BioWare to push out high-quality new content regularly, along with all the other stuff they have to do, you'd see the problem. BioWare are a fantastic studio, but they're not superhuman. They can only do so much with what they have.

But I'm not even talking content like the last two DLC we've seen. I'm talking missions in general, just to utilize the characters you've grown to like, and so on. For instance, consider Legion for a moment and the fact that you get him at basically the end of the game. If you've already used the DLC, there's really not much to do with him. On top of that, it was even more disappointing that I couldn't bring them along with me in Arrival - especially considering that fact.

We have already had 2 amazing mission DLCs. Fire Walker & LotSB. Plus the less well received 'Arrival' which was ok. In roughly 14 months since ME2's release date. That is quite epic in itself. While we are still begging for another DLC i really do believe that Bioware should really put everything into ME3, not more DLC missions before ME3 - because arrival set the story for ME3.

We haven't even forgotten the extra tanks, armour and guns since last Jan.

More story DLCs before ME3 could run the risk o0f being an ME3 DLC or becoming part of the story in ME3. So as agonizing it is to say. We can wait for the ME3 trilogy as the past 3 mission DLCs have more than small spoonfuls of fun. :)

Mass Effect is not a dungeoncrawler, creating a dungeon with random encounters/enemies, some items and a few bosses is very different from creating a multipath narrative cased within a few missions. For a player to become immersed in a multipath narrative, a lot more work needs to be put in other than just leveldesign. Everything they do will also have some impact in ME3 and most people don't want to go on an N7 mission and kill more blue suns/eclipse/bloodpack...

I read in another thread that ME:3 was already completed, so would it really impede their progress? Lol

April's fools day passed already and that just isn't possible, especially with me wanting to be able to have conversations with every team member and their entire non mission dialogue amounting to 10-15 mins would be nice and very satisfactory. Plus a hundred side missions, lots of LI scenes, constant squad banter. So NO, they haven't finished :P.

DLC is diminishing returns, business-wise. The further out from the original release, the less people are playing it, the less people are likely to buy DLC. Eventually, it is best to divert all resources to making the latest release.

Le sigh, I remember when people were content to have a great game on its own, and would feel rightly outraged at the idea of having to pay more money for anything less than a proper expansion pack. I miss those days. :(

Yup. In fact I want less combat and more story. Mass Effect isn't meant to be a dungeon crawler and White Knight was terrible imo.

Honestly, it would be ideal to have many amazing missions OP, but Mass Effect being a high quality game, it's just too hard and complex for Bioware to be able to focus their resources on making DLC that holds little weight to the overall plot arc. They want it to be plot specific, and it was all planned out ahead of time.

Look at BDTS in Mass 1. Yeah, it was cool...but pointless in the end. Mass 2's DLC's were extremely thrilling and exciting, and held major weight in regards to importance. But this is beside the point.

Basically, it comes down to this: Mass Effect has been made a certain way for a reason...is hard to build for graphical/dialogue reasons, and consists of story driven missions that have a relevant plot that can be relatable to the Reaper story.

Of course I'm not satisfied. I've completed the game and I didn't want it to end. Is it so wrong to want to continue playing more mini adventures, to sate our hunger for ME:3?

Virtually everyone is complaining about Arrival, which was generally 'well-done' in the over all sense.

and you want them to churn out even more content every 3 months? The quality of the DLCs produced at this rate would be atrocious.
This is a case of the fan not understanding what they're asking

Is it? How do you know if they designated a small team to work on DLC, that it couldn't be done? Or, if they were to seek outside sources, such as smaller companies trying to break into the business, that it wouldn't work? Before people try and shut an idea down immediately, why don't you consider the options.

I don't get what the big deal is. I don't have XBL and thus can't get any DLC... so I'm stuck with relatively few missions in ME2 compared to the great many fun little sidequests in ME1... I kind of wish there was a GTA-style thing (not the random killing, though I admit I'd like that to pass time). I meant in the free-roam sense. Also, it'd be cool if going around the galaxy and landing on planets I could always have a chance of getting into intense firefights. Always another little adventure and shootout for Shepard and Co., being a Spectre and all.

I agree.

If the OP wants an RPG that's still great to play post-main game then go get yourself a copy of Oblivion or Morrowind.
