I asked this in other forum but it was the wrong section...

Ok there may be alot of topics like this so sorry about that.

I'm
stuck between a Rogue Archer (Ranger) and a Rogue Assassin. I love
being Archers but in this game I don't think they're as amazing as I'd
like them to be, there pretty slow with the shooting and I'm not a huge
fan of Ranger skills as I'd prefer a Archer specific Specialization.

I love
Assassins because of the speed and finesse but how strong can poisons
get? I made a archer before I got very far with my Assassin so didn't
get to find out how good poisons can be. So basically I keep making new
characters switching between Archer and Assassin, I need your input...

ps. I don't like Warriors or Mages, not my style. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/bandit.png

Also what skills/talents would be good to invest in if I was to be an assassin, poison, ... stealth, evasion... ?

I'd go for assassin (how many s' are in that exactly?)

Pretty much all the default rogue skills are very, very handy. The line that leads to the two passive skills would be my first bet - with those and a good dex nothing is going to hit you that often. I've heard a few folks talking stealth so before a big battle they can run about the battlefield laying strategic traps, outside of that I haven't found that great a use for it. Generally I don't want to start a battle with aggro on me so I wouldn't go for a first hit from stealth. You can of course start the battle then stealth in, but by the time you're in position you could have have 2, 3 - sometimes 4 - normal hits on a mob.

Poisons are very useful but I wouldn't be using them all the time - there is a limited amount you can make in the game due to resource/gold issues. They're great against orange mobs and bosses though.

I think my biggest advice would be to make sure you're always attacking from the rear - you'll crit lots and hit a lot harder in general. From behind a rogue class is almost overpowered considering how easy it is to pick off targets held by your tank.

Just my two cents, hope it helps!

Thanks very much, also would Coup De Grace be a good talent to invest in or is it not worth the points? Was also thinking of the whirlwind row in duel weapons...

I personally love archers as the archetype, but in Dragon Age they're complete gimp compared to most other combinations, especially since a lot of the talent's you'll want means spending points in talents that give little or no reward to get to.

If you want the big numbers and the versatility, go Assassin.

Also I will be being an elf, should I be city or dalish? I personally prefer Dalish with the tattoos however would an assassin need the survival point?

Also would it be worthwhile getting lockpicking/stealing or should I get those with Leliana?

You're not playing your archer correctly if you think they blow. I run a 4 DPS group with crowd control (Allistair tanking, Sten DPSing(2H), Morrigan AoE's/Crowd Control/Spot heals/My archer).

I can easily stealth in, find the mage or elite, get into position, send my group in and use Arrow of Slaying. Result: By the time my group gets detected and starts doing whatever assignments I gave them, my shot killed the biggest threat on the other side. I've easily gotten 400+ dmg crits at level 11. Then it's just a matter of letting my group clear out the garbage. While I'm only doing about 27% of the dmg in a 4 DPS group, I'm effectively one of the most valuable members by being able to completely obliterate the biggest threat on the enemy's end. I'm also able to assign Morrigan targets to Cone of Cold, which I then Crit and shatter along with Sten.

If you play your archer strategically, it's amazing. You also bring another tank in the group with your active pet. It makes a huge difference versus big groups of enemies. If you also start using traps, then it's seriously just ridiculous but I haven't bothered yet, slows the combat down way too much for my liking... but I definatly enjoy scouting, assigning, executing and then annihilating the biggest threat in a matter of a second and a half... all while staying at range with 0 aggro.

For some of you who may have struggled with the Revenants in the forest... I'm able to drop it to about 50% on my first shot, following this with Morrigan force fielding it out of the fight while we clear out the garbage, allowing my Arrow of Slaying's cooldown to recover... and by the time we're done clearing the garbage, I can use a 2nd AoS and most likely kill or weaken it enough to make it trivial by kiting it around while my group finishes it off.

Zevran's ambush? I 1-shotted the mage before she could even squeeze a single cast out and finished off every single archers by the time my group cleared out Z and his melee henchemen.

It's amazingly fun if you play it right. You're moreso a "sniper" than the typical machine gun most MMOs created and slapped a "Hunter" label on it.

Your'e the first i see who actually has a good use for the stealth skill, since its not the most use skill in the game.btw, did u have all 3 archer trees?

Also, u should try out the glyphs spells if u need some exstra cc, since they are great to use both offencive and defencive.

Currently at level 11 I've only maxed the first 2 lines of Archery. I'm holding back on the bottom line simply because currently, I wanted to get higher stealth & lock picking as well as gathering the 3 different pets in order to get the Master Ranger at level 12.

Anyways, the only worthwile ability to get in the 3rd branch is Scatter Shot for the AoE.

I personally love how I can easily tip the battle in our favor by "sniping" the biggest threat. Trolls anyone? 2-Shottage at it's finest lol. I basically take down any elite/boss to 50% in the first few seconds of a fight. It'll be amazing once I can get Feing Death.

Yeah after playing through a bit as assassin I'm missing my Archer, I don't think they blow though, I don't recall saying that.

Too go Dalish or City, I think Dalish would be more useful as survival is a freebie. What specific skills should I be looking at, I know first two rows of Archery are good, stealth is a obvious one... Lethality maybe? Also, Ranger or Bard?, I don't know if I'm a fan of the Pets(had bear).

I find the bear to be extremely useful if only to be another "sponge". He does decent damage, I figure it'll be even better once I get Ranger Mastery. I use his attack ability when I need to pull something off, it seems to do amazing threat and usually pulls off of me.

P.s: The beat is also great at triggering traps instead of using your party lol. In the lower ruins, the bear was amazing at popping all the webs while my party dispatched the spiders. I'm an animal abuser :( lol

Well, the ranger ability's are all good for that exstra punch, and why not get bard also? its a great support class, and as a ranged guy, u can provide that without to much risk.

Also. get scattershot quick, couse late in the game u get hit by it all the time..... so be the first to use it.

The fact that I need to get 2 useless abilities as well as 1 "meh" situational skill for 1 AoE stun ability seems like a rather pointless idea... I'd rather leave the CC down to Morrigan doing her job right while I take down the big guys.

I think I would rather go down the "Below the belt" tree for Below the belt, Lethality & Evasion. Adds some surviability. Then again I think I would like to get Feing Death in order to keep doing damage to the main target instead of running around endlessly due to having constant aggro on elites/bosses after an AoS.

The bard seems to be the only other logicial spec unfortunately... unless doing a range/melee hybrid. Song of Valor could be particularily useful, especially if used in combination with Regen from Morrigan. It would allow me to use more Critical Shots or CC shots during AoS's cooldown. Song of Courage also seems to be a rather useful buff. Could potentially start the fight with SoC while stealthing to maximize the opener's damage followed by swapping to SoV for regen. Adds versatility to your support tools while AoS is on cooldown.

Too bad you don't like the Mage class because they can do an enormous amount of damage.

More than any other character in the game.

I'm almost finished with a rogue Bard/Duelist archer build in nightmare...not the highest dps but hes pretty beast.

The dueling talent adds its bonus to attack and defense whether you're using a bow or melee weapons. My Archer has 143 defense + evasion at level 20 right now, bosses are about the only things that can hit him and he has 98% accuracy in the game so far. His armor is crap so I maxed stealth (1st char I've used it on lol) to get him out of trouble.

Rapid shot is a nice stance for trash mobs and scattershot is just plain nasty, by far my favorite archer talent.

Lockpicking is a waste, no good items are in locked chests, unless you just want a little extra cash from selling stuff from locked chests.
