I announced the release of the MotB Makeover SoZ Edition nearly 2 months ago and I'm surprised that with the amount of feedback I've received for the OC Makeover that the responses for the MotB Makeover have been minimal.  I actually spent more time on the MotB Makeover and the MotB Makeover adds several additional areas, items, and companions. So even if you loved everything about MotB you might want to try the MotB Makeover as well.

Requires MotB and SoZ. Compatible with Windows, Mac, and Steam.

Some of the features of the MotB Makeover include:

- SoZ Party Editor
- SoZ recipes and crafting
- Mystery about what happened to the OC companions addressed more completely
- Alternative mechanisms provided for solving nasty puzzles compatible with good roleplay
- Feature to prevent spirit eater points from being lost when idle
- Dream Weapon enhanced and fixed
- Additional companions provided (including some old friends)
- Ability to use one henchman as a full companion
- Ability to alter Okku's appearance (and Safiya)
- Kaedrin PrC Pack compatible (mostly, see documentation on the vault page)

Download. Backup/zip your MotB campaign folder. Install. Play. Post feedback. Vote. It's just that simple.

Link displayed below.

I'd be very interested in this if you allowed a final confrontation with kelemvor and the wall. I simply don't feel like playing through the campaign again only to come to grips with that horrible ending, no matter how good the soundtrack is.

I didn't tamper with the major storyline. The focus of the Makeover is to add options for playing, it doesn't alter the storyline significantly. The ending remains the same.

you allowed shandra to be revived in the OC remake, that seems like a very large story change to me. either way, the changes seem positive, but all in all, I think this more or less explains why people aren't in a huge hurry to comment on this, as fun as the ride is, the ending of MotB sucks.

Reviving Shandra in the OC required a significant amount of work, but didn't change the ending in a significant way. I don't disagree with you that the MotB ending was unsatisfactory in some ways (not as bad as the OC ending though), but the original polling I did to determine what people disliked about MotB didn't return a high number of complaints about the ending.  Mostly people disliked the Spirit Eater function and the need to do evil acts in order to solve some of the puzzles.  So those were the plot points I addressed, along with adding SoZ crafting and the party editor and death system and some other fixes.

Rewriting the ending of any of these games would likely be a significant effort introducing significant bug risk and likely more complaints than appreciation.

I had a very happy ending to Mask of the Betrayer

and I fully support the efforts of Kaldor and his SoZ make-over editions. I only wish this was around when I first played the campaign. Alas, that was before the 2nd expansion was even released. If only there was a way to travel back in time...

Harumph!

I played Kaldor's OC Makeover on my last playthrough. Sure wish I could have always used it. Shandra makes one heck of a stormlord. Saving her didn't bother me at all. I used her just for kicks. Kaldor does truly awesome work.

I'll use the MOTB makeover SOZ edition on my next playthrough. Haven't had time, yet.

Great work Kaldor.

Well, the MotB Makeover includes both time travel and Shandra!

Thanks for the kind remarks.

I'm willing to give the mod a try when I finish my current run through the OC, it sounds fun.

I'm also one of the people who'd love an ending change to MotB. It could be done in a way that would barely change anything, in fact.
***Spoiler***

When the PC finally gets to speak to Kelemvor, an added Diplomacy check could allow the PC to get Kelemvor to reconsider the Wall. The rest of the conversation wouldn't need to be changed at all, just a few throwaway lines added in. I know that would make a huge difference in my own playthroughs, even for something so small.

For a tiny bit more work, an ending could be added to show that the PC's words had an impact on Kelemvor, and he finally withdrew the wall. Since all of the endings are just a pastiche of still art, a single frame of still art added in with that text would be enough to ''change the ending'' for anyone who passed the Diplomacy check.

Evil or neutral characters might opt for a Bluff or Intimidate option instead, where they threaten to essentially wage a publicity campaign back on the Prime Material plane to win the hearts and minds of the populace away from supporting the existence of the Wall... and by extension, Kelemvor himself, unless he goes along with tearing it down. (I personally think this should have been Kaelyn's goal all along, rather than a military campaign doomed to failure, but oh well). Interfering with the level of faith a god receives is really the only way to really sit up and make them pay attention.

I think it would be cool, and not require much work. I just wish I had the computer literacy to do it! Regardless, thanks for all the work you've put in, and congratulations on the increased joy you've brought to so many players.

Other than removing lines I made very few changes to cutscene conversations in the Makeovers. This is because there is little that yells "bug!" more than an unspoken line in the middle of an otherwise spoken conversation. I had considered altering the artwork because one of the complaints was that it is human male-centric, but in the end I decided to just leave the ending as-is. Of course that means that someone else can make changes to that conversation without adversely anything the Makeover does. There are people who are very into cutscene conversations, but I really dislike them, so I minimized my altering of them. I'd probably please very few people if I tried.

That's a good point. It would need to be even more subtle in order to be seamless. The PC could make the Diplomacy/Bluff/Intimidate check, and Kelemvor's response could be wordless: "Although Kelemvor says nothing, you can tell by the look in his eyes, by his body posture, that he has heard your words and accepted them."

I really like the optional path the Makeover added to reclaim a certain person's soul - very creative.
I hope I have not walked into a bug there though....
I am at the farmhouse, go inside, pick up a number of items including a Rusty Key. But no one to talk to inside or outside the farmhouse. Is someone missing, or am I supposed to do something else?
I have the shadow 'Fern' in my party, btw. Also, I am using Windows 7 64bit.

No bug. You need to look around more outside the farmhouse. Look for an archway.

Glad you are enjoying it.

I have a stupid question.

Installed this mod for the "more companions" bit, and now I am not sure how to actually get the game to let me have the "extra" companion along with me.

So yeh thats my question.

How do I get the extra companion to come along with me?

If by "more companions" you mean player-created cohorts like SoZ has then you access them via the player menu (the big eye). There is a party editor option that allows you to create or import cohorts. If you use this option to create people then they will be too low-level for MotB though. But you should be able to import anyone you played SoZ with.

If by "more companions" you mean Ammon Jerro, Shandra, Amie, Neeshka, and Casavir, then you have to encounter them in the plot in order to add them into the party. Depending on the choices you make you may not encounter them. As I recall the choices become significant when you get to the Academy. The primary goal was to provide alternative options for helping AJ that did not involve manipulating or trading souls. So when you get to that situation choose the options that do not involve such things and you should be on the path to meeting up with the other companions.

Well playing MotB.

And I wanted to bring all four companions with me The Red Wizard, The Dove, The Man****, and The Bear.

I saw an LP where this was done; and I saw you suggesting to someone to download ur mod in order to do this lol.

Yes, the Makeover increases the number of companions allowed in the party from 5 to 8. When you encounter a companion and try to add them to your party it shouldn't force you to kick another out. Is the game still telling you that you are above the limit?

Well yes.

Adding The Bear (or any of them really) tells me I need to remove another companion.

:(

Do i need to start MotB again?

The Makeover includes new conversations for each of the companions. If you installed it properly into the MotB campaign folder then those conversations will ignore the number of companions in the party. Okku's conversation, for example, should have an option to change his shape and size. If it doesn't then either you didn't install it properly or you have other versions of their conversations in your override folder. If there is anything in your override folder you should remove those things. You do not need to restart MotB.

Hmm.

I can't think what would be interfering...

There is a mod called the OC Companions for MotB that appears to be on my system, but um I didn't download it or install it.
So I guess it was installed with another mod.

The author of that mod appears to have had a hand in the Romance Pack for the OC-MotB which I did download and do have installed. I wonder if the "mule" mod is included in that? And perhaps that is what is interfering?

I guess I'd need to take the whole thing off...

I also have Charlie's UI mod... Dunno if thats causing a problem?

Also got spell fixes, and feat fixes... Spell fixes includes a dialogue.tlk file... Which might be it?

Anything you have in your override folder is going to have preference over the Makeover. Of the things you list I would guess that the Romance pack is causing the problem because it likely replaced the companion conversations. I doubt that the spell fixes would be a problem. But as I state in the Makeover documentation, it was not tested with other mods so if you think there is a problem the first step is empty your override folder.

If Charlie's UI modifies the player menu then that would interfere with accessing the Party Editor.

It does.

It's a UI mod cos the vanilla UI sucks.

lol.

Took the romance mod out and that was the culprit. I now have Safiya in my party with Okku, Gann, and Kaelyn.

I've released patch 2012-11-07. This patch corrects some OC companion conversations, restores the ability to destroy the scribes in the Death God's Vault (only after AJ has been restored), and adds the ability to consume Spirit Essences to regain spirit eater points.

I've also uploaded a walkthrough that explains how to get to the new areas and how to get the OC companions.
