Something I've always wished for in these toolsets (NWN, NWN2,DAO) is the ability to display an image when the PC uses an item. This could be used to display hand drawn maps, bloodstained notes etc. Things that really add to a story.

I always used to use this kind of thing a lot when playing pen and paper games and found that players respond well to having some handwritten clue to a quest or puzzle.

Of course such a utility could be used for whatever the designer wanted to do with it and there really are endless possibilities. Imagine being able to present the player with a portrait of a vilain long before they meet him / her.

I haven't seen any mention of it so I'm guess there is no support for this in DAO. Can someone please tell me I'm wrong? If it is not officially supported then maybe there is some way to use another feature of the game to this effect. So long as there was some way to display a still image to the player then the rest could be scripted.

My last wish is pure fantasy: the player should be able to print the image from within the game (or at least save it to a folder to print later).

Hmm... I have never tried this, but I can imagine various ways to do this, depending on just how you want this to look, but the approaches I can think of are rather complicated - involving cutscenes or new models with the map/note applied as a texture to it. This would allow you animation as such, but it seems a bit of overkill -- but I don't know if there is any simple way of just showing a file.

So is there not even a way to show a movie that isn't a cutscene?

You can show a normal movie, probably in a .bik format or so.

you can allways bring up a worldmap with the image.

Ah, of course.... yes, that would be the most simple approach.

There is also a "Slide Show" tab for each line of a conversation node that allows you to display an image. So you could fire up a conversation when the placeable is used and display your map using a conversation line with an image (in theory - haven't tried it yet).

FWIW, this was very doable in NWN2 as well. :)

ok - that conversation slide show option sounds promising.

I did think of the world map but thought it might be confusing as to what was really going on, and I wasn't sure if you could have a world map with no map pins on it, or if the screen would have other buttons and text that would detract.
